Chapter 289: 293 Drinking Game_1

Ji Sen took her to a bar. It was not yet open for business, so it was quite chaotic inside.

The band was setting up the stage, rigging the lights, with clusters of cables strewn on the floor.

Several servers were chatting in groups while some scantily-clad, disheveled women puffed cigarettes, clearly not very decent folks.

When they saw Ji Sen, everyone cheerfully greeted him, referring to him affectionately as "Brother Sen".

Ji Sen, sometimes nodding in response, sometimes not, guided Lin Xiangwan into a room at the back.

The room was quite simply furnished. It featured a large desk and a large chair. A large sofa occupied one corner. There was a bathroom and a large bed. That was all.

Lin Xiangwan looked around. "Are you here again to check out the place?"

Ji Sen exhaled a puff of smoke and nodded. "Pretty much, yeah."

Lin Xiangwan crinkled her nose. "Can’t you find something more legitimate to do? Why do you have to deal with the social deviants? Wasn’t the lesson from the last time enough for you?"

Ji Sen felt a bit sour, being constantly chided by her. "What do you mean, ’not legitimate’?"

"Well, you just can’t do these things anymore!"

Such things like ’checking the place out’, all the people you deal with are up to no good. Plus, it’s easy to offend someone, and those offended are not good people either. You’re bound to face retaliation at some point!

With a distressed look, Ji Sen said, "But what else can I do if not this? You want me to go work as a manager for some big company? Do you think they’d accept me? I don’t have a diploma, I can’t use a computer, I can’t even speak English!"

"Can’t you work as a salesman then? Go out and make some sales. As long as you perform well, you could make quite a lot in a month!" Lin Xiangwan angrily retorted. Did this man think he could be a manager without any skills whatsoever?

Sneering disapprovingly, Ji Sen asked, "A lot? Just how much is ’a lot’?"

After considering for a moment, Lin Xiangwan answered. "If you do well in sales, you can easily make twenty to thirty thousand a month. If, in the future, you are promoted to regional manager, the income level would be way beyond that."

Ji Sen chuckled contemptuously again. "Just like the beer salespeople, right? The ones who deliver to us every day, give us credit, and then settle the accounts later!"

"Yes, pretty much the same," Lin Xiangwan said. "If you are good at it, you can gradually move up..."

Chuckling once more, Ji Sen cut her off. "Sister, we know what sales is about. What I think you don’t understand is how we secure clients for these drinks. We have several beer brands, why do we always stock the green-label ones, but not the blue-label ones?"

Lin Xiangwan pondered and said, "Because the green-label brand offers you higher kickbacks, and thus, you make a higher profit!"

"That’s part of it, but it’s not the main factor. The primary problem is that these breweries are constantly fighting over turf, leading to a number of salespeople being laid out right at our doorstep recently. One was said to have died, another had his liver and spleen ruptured. Even if he does survive, he’d pretty much be disabled for the rest of his life." Ji Sen spoke dispassionately, yet with a sense of profound melancholy.

"How could this happen?" Lin Xiangwan gasped in disbelief.

Ji Sen gave a bitter smile. "That’s the reality of our society. Where there’s competition, there will be casualties. After all, given that the market is only so big, how is it possible for some people to make money and others not to? If I go into sales as you suggest, wouldn’t I still end up in the same physical battles, risking my life?"

Lin Xiangwan had no rebuttal.

Ji Sen shrugged slightly. "So, since it’s all the same, I might as well stay here...as a humble boss, right?"

"Is this bar run by you?" Lin Xiangwan asked.

"Not entirely. It’s co-owned with a ’princeling’ (the son of a government official). He has an official job so it’s not suitable for him to appear publicly; I handle all the external affairs while he takes care of all the necessary bribes!"

"Aren’t you afraid they might take advantage of you if you entangle yourself with these types of people?"

"This guy wouldn’t do that. He’s got a good moral compass!"

"But how ’good’ is his moral compass? If he was really so righteous, why didn’t he bail you out earlier?" Lin Xiangwan questioned him, her expression showing a clear disbelief.

"This friend just came into the picture!" Ji Sen confidently declared. "Sister, I’ve always been a good judge of character, and I’ve been right every time so far. My previous friend wasn’t neglecting me; he just lacked the means. But this new friend, despite his young age, is both ambitious and a genuinely good person. I definitely did not misjudge him!"

Come to think of it, Ji Sen wasn’t a fool. Having been a part of society for so many years, it was unlikely for him to always get duped.

"Alright, just be careful in everything you do."

"I will." Ji Sen replied with a slight smile.

"When is the bar opening? Or has it already opened?" Lin Xiangwan asked, glancing around.

"We’re currently in the trial operation phase."

"Are things going okay? Why do you always get into businesses that I find so risky? Authorities are cracking down pretty hard right now, they’ll definitely start investigating you soon," warned Lin Xiangwan.

"This is a pure bar, we just sell alcohol, nothing to be afraid of investigation," replied Ji Sen, who seemed to be behaving a lot like a bona fide businessman.

"Come off it; I’ve seen a bunch of hostesses already!" Lin Xiangwan didn’t believe him in the slightest.

"Well, we can’t do without them can we? But we only involve ourselves to a minor degree, causing only a minor nuisance to society"

"You better err on the side of caution," Lin Xiangwan warned him again, worried.

"I know." Being repeatedly cautioned was getting on Ji Sen’s nerves. "What’s the matter with you? I brought you here to show that I’m doing fine, but all you’re doing is throwing cold water on the whole thing."

"Hehe..." Lin Xiangwan smiled. "Okay, I’ll come here more often and have a few drinks to support your business."

Ji Sen raised a forefinger, excitement in his voice. "Speaking of drinks, that brings us to the point. I want to have a drink with you, sister!"

Lin Xiangwan thought about it for a moment then smiled, "Alright, let’s do it."

"Hehe..." Ji Sen laughed. "Drinking with you is always the most fun!"

"Let’s drink right here then!"

"But there’s nothing to eat here. Just drinking wouldn’t do justice to you. Let me treat you to a meal!"

"Alright then~~"

They moved to a Chinese restaurant that served a variety of delicacies. After ordering a few dishes, they started their drinking session.

Lin Xiangwan hadn’t had a drink for quite some time since marrying Qin Muchuan, so she was quite pleased with the situation.

She continued drinking, one cup after another.

Whenever she drank, she never behaved improperly, except for that one time when drugged and ended up in Qin Muchuan’s room by mistake.

"Sister, thank you for saving me. I know all that happened, and I’m really grateful," Ji Sen, his cheeks slightly flushed from the alcohol, raised his wine glass to Lin Xiangwan in gratitude.

Lin Xiangwan furrowed her beautiful brows, unhappy. "What are you on about? Who allowed you to thank me? You’ve just said something wrong, so drink as a penalty!"
