Chapter 127 - Hundred And Twenty Seven
Chapter 127: Chapter Hundred And Twenty Seven
The air was thick with tension as Ryan took in the scene before him. He glanced between Suzy and Lord Evan, a puzzled expression on his face.
"Have you two met before?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity.
Suzy hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yes," she replied, her voice low as a whisper. "We met in town the day we went to your mother’s orphanage and at Eleanor’s masquerade ball."
Ryan nodded. "Oh, then there’s no need for introductions," he said. "Since you two are acquaintances."
Evan stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Suzy. He reached out and took her hand, kissing the back of her glove. "You’re right, Ryan," he said, his voice dripping with insincerity. "I believe we know ourselves a little bit well."
Suzy snatched her hand back, her face flushed with anger. She rubbed her hand on her clothes, her eyes filled with disgust. She felt suspicious of him and didn’t appreciate his touch.
Evan smiled, his expression smug. "Don’t be so touchy," he said. "I’m just trying to be friendly, your Grace."
Ryan cleared his throat, uncomfortable with the tension. "Shall we go to the dining room?" he asked, offering Suzy his arm.
Suzy hesitated for a moment after giving Evan a suspicious glance before taking Ryan’s arm. They walked towards the dining room, followed by Lord Evan.
"I hope you’re hungry," Ryan said, turning to Evan. "The duchess and I were about to eat breakfast."
"That’s delightful," Evan replied, his eyes scanning the room.
As they entered the dining room, Suzy couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Lord Evan’s presence made her uneasy, and she couldn’t help but wonder what his intentions were. She thought to herself "why did he hide his identity, his relationship with Ryan when he knew who she was?"
The room was filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the clinking of china. Ryan called the footman, a young man with a respectful demeanor, to take Lord Evan’s luggage to his room.
" Don’t worry my aide will take it to my room" Evan said as he took his seat.
Ryan waved his hand in a dismissive gesture to the footman. " Nonsense, the footman will do just that." He said pulling a seat for Suzy before going to his.
The footman bowed and left the room, his footsteps echoing in the hallway.
As the three sat down at the breakfast table, Mrs. Madelyn began to serve the meal. She placed a plate of eggs, bacon, and sausages in front of each person , along with some pieces of toast. A bowl of fresh fruit and a pot of tea completed the meal.
"Would you like some marmalade, Duchess?" Mrs. Madelyn asked, offering a small jar of her homemade preserve.
Suzy smiled and accepted the jar. "Thank you," she replied, spreading a generous amount of marmalade on her toast.
Lord Evan, meanwhile, was eyeing the sausages with a look of intense interest. "These look delicious," he said, reaching for a sausage.
Ryan chuckled. "They are," he replied. "Our cook is quite talented."
" Yes, I remember Mrs Madelyn. No one can match her cooking skills." Evan said in between meal.
"I hope you enjoy your breakfast, gentlemen," Mrs. Madelyn said, her voice warm and inviting.
Ryan took a sip of his tea, his eyes scanning the room. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. Lord Evans’s presence was like a dark cloud hanging over the breakfast table.
Suzy, on the other hand, was trying to ignore the tension. She focused on her breakfast, picking at the scrambled eggs and toast.
Lord Evan, however, seemed to be enjoying himself. He chatted animatedly with Ryan, his voice filled with a forced cheerfulness.
As they ate, the conversation turned to the annual orphanage jubilee. Ryan and Suzy were excited about the event, but Lord Evan seemed less enthusiastic. He kept his eyes on Suzy, his gaze filled with a strange intensity.
Suzy felt uncomfortable under his scrutiny. She tried to avoid his gaze, but it was difficult. She could feel his eyes following her every move.
As breakfast came to an end, Ryan stood up and stretched. "I’ll be in the study if you need me," he said. Suzy excused herself, saying she needed to attend to some matters in her chambers.
Evan smiled, his expression smug. "No problem, your Grace," he replied.
As soon as Suzy was out of sight, Evan’s smile disappeared. He reached for a napkin, wiped his mouth, and stood up. He walked towards his room, a determined look on his face.
Inside his room, he called for his aide, Brook. "Come in," he said, his voice commanding.
Brook entered the room, bowing respectfully. "What can I do for you, my lord?" he asked.
"I want you to find out what’s going on with Thorne," Evan replied. "I need every detail possible."
Brook nodded. "Your wish is my command, my lord," he said.
As Brook was about to leave, Evan stopped him. "Oh, and get me one of those whores" he said, his voice filled with lust. "It’s been a long time since I’ve had such an indulgence."
Brook’s eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly recovered. "Of course, my lord," he replied.
Brook left the room, his mind racing with thoughts of how he would fulfill his master’s request.
Evan walked over to his luggage and pulled out a leather-bound book. He opened it, revealing pages filled with symbols and diagrams. Inside were pages filled with detailed diagrams and descriptions of various poisons. These were the same poisons of the murderer, the weapons he had used to carry out his heinous crimes. He reached for a cigar and lit it.
The room was filled with the thick scent of cigar smoke as Evan sat in the armchair, lost in thought. He flipped through the pages of the leather-bound book, his eyes scanning the detailed diagrams and descriptions of the poisons.
A sinister smile crept across his face as he read the final entry. "Count Edmund," he muttered, his voice filled with venom. He closed the book and tossed it onto the table, then he took another long drag of the cigar.
