Chapter 110: Chapter Hundred And Ten

Do you remember what happened?" Suzy asked, her voice barely a whisper.

The man nodded, offering Suzy a seat. He began narrating, his voice filled with a mixture of sadness and anger.

"Your mother, Lady Fiona, had been having an affair with Count Edmund even before he married Countess Helene," he said. "He couldn’t marry Fiona because she didn’t have any social standing. She was a commoner, and the daughter of a blacksmith so he married Helene, daughter of an earl out of greed for her family power and benefits. Helene actually love Edmund but he wasn’t fair with his distribution of affection favoring Fiona more."

"He still kept his marriage a secret and continued with his relationship with Fiona like nothing ever happened. Fortunately, Fiona found out about Edmund’s marriage, she wanted to leave," Gerald continued. "But she was already carrying his child. Edmund, desperate to keep his secret, brought Fiona to live with him, much to Helene’s displeasure."

Suzy’s eyes widened in shock. She couldn’t believe that Cassandra’s father had been shameless from the beginning.

"Helene was jealous and resentful of Fiona," Gerald continued. "She saw Fiona as a threat to her position in her husband’s heart. She was determined to get rid of her."

"After your birth, you had an unusual appearance," He paused, his voice filled with sadness. "You had tiny dark dots on your face, and when you laughed and smiled, your cheeks would show a deep hole."

Suzy’s eyes widened in shock. She had never heard of this before. Is he talking about the freckles and dimples?

"The doctor said there was nothing that could be done about it," He continued. "Your father began to despise you because of your appearance. He wanted to keep you at an orphanage, but Fiona refused."

Suzy’s heart ached. She couldn’t believe that Cassandra’s father had treated her so badly even at her birth.

"Their relationship became even more strained," Gerald said. "Your father even started turning a blind eye to Helene’s actions towards Fiona. It was the top gossip of the manor."

Suzy’s heart ached as Gerald started coughing. Quickly, she went to get him a glass of water.

"Thank you my dear," he said, his voice raspy. "My health is slowly losing its vigor."

Suzy smiled, handing him the glass.

Gerald finished the water and continued, "On that faithful day, Count Edmund was away at his social club gathering. You were just a two-year-old child."

Suzy listened intently, her heart pounding in her chest.

"Countess Helene threw Fiona out with you in her arms," Gerald continued, his voice filled with sadness. "She instructed the servants not to help her. She wanted you and Fiona to stay outside the manor as punishment for reasons I didn’t know about."

Suzy’s eyes widened in shock. She couldn’t believe that Helene would do such a thing.

"It was obvious that Helene didn’t want Fiona to leave the manor grounds or enter the manor," Gerald continued. "I was tending to the flower beds when Fiona approached me with you in her arms. Her cheek was swollen and her hair disheveled."

Suzy’s heart ached. She could imagine the fear and desperation that Fiona must have felt.

"She begged me to take her to Edmund," Gerald continued, his voice filled with emotion. "I refused because I wanted to avoid Helene’s wrath. I didn’t want to get involved in the situation."

Suzy’s eyes narrowed. She knew that Helene was a cruel and manipulative woman. But she never thought she would harm a woman carrying a child.

"But your cries changed my decision," Gerald continued, his voice filled with a mixture of sadness and pride. "I couldn’t bear to see you suffer."

"I drove both of you in the carriage to the location," Gerald continued, his voice filled with a mixture of sadness and fear. "At that place, where the nobles drink and hunt peasants."

Suzy’s eyes widened in surprise.

"I think it belonged to a Duke," Gerald said, his voice filled with a mixture of confusion and sadness. "I can’t remember his name."

"The guards didn’t let us through the gate," Gerald paused. "I turned my back, and I couldn’t find Fiona. I didn’t even know how she got in."

Suzy’s heart pounded in her chest.

"Just then, I heard a gunshot," Gerald looked at her , his face filled with a mixture of fear and horror. "I rushed over, climbed the wall, and fell into an open lawn."

Suzy was too stunned to speak. She could imagine the horror of the scene.

"I spotted a seven-year-old boy standing there," Gerald continued, his voice filled with a mixture of sadness and anger. "He was screaming, saying something I couldn’t hear."

Suzy’s heart ached. She couldn’t believe what she had been hearing.

"I heard another gunshot, and then I heard your cries," Gerald continued, his voice filled with a mixture of fear and horror.

Suzy’s eyes filled with tears. She could imagine the terror that poor woman was must have felt.

"I wanted to go get you, but your father came out first, so I ran out of fear of being caught."

Suzy’s heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t believe that count Edmund had been there.

"I went back to the manor under the rain that started pouring," Gerald continued. "Countess Helene accused me of things I didn’t do. She was about to send me to prison, but my brother helped me."

Suzy was shocked. She couldn’t believe that Helene had framed Gerald.

"Do you know anything that went on in that lawn?" Suzy asked, her voice filled with a mixture of fear and determination.

Gerald shook his head. "I don’t know," he replied, his voice filled with a mixture of sadness and regret. "But I know one of the members of the club. His name is Baron Carew."

Suzy’s eyes lit up. She turned to Noah. "Get the carriage ready," she said, her voice filled with a mixture of excitement and fear.

Noah nodded.

"Thank you," she said, facing Gerald, her voice filled with gratitude. "And I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through because of my mother and I."

Gerald smiled " im just happy that you are alive and well." He said his voice filled with happiness.

Suzy stood up from her seat and went towards the carriage, her head swirling with so many questions. Did the woman die there, if she did, who fired those shots that killed her? Who was that young boy. Why did they lie to Cassandra about her mother’s existence?

So many unanswered questions about her mother and the person Cassandra called father.

As Suzy and Noah left the gardener’s house, they couldn’t hear the rain pouring down. They entered the carriage and rode back home .
