My American magical life -
Chapter 87 - 87 15 Even if Only One More Second
87: Chapter 15 Even if Only One More Second 87: Chapter 15 Even if Only One More Second The dark room where Cheng Daqi and his companions waited was the central air conditioning ventilation room of the library.
This place housed numerous central air conditioning units, including many ventilation ducts.
All the ducts led to the roof, and between the ventilation room and the roof was a protrusion about 1.5 meters high, resembling a small house.
This was the part where the ventilation room was higher than the other rooms, and there was a door on one side of the small house, but it could only be opened from the outside.
Generally, when maintenance was needed for the central air conditioning ventilation system, the maintenance workers would climb the stairs from outside the library to the rooftop, and then open this little maintenance door from the outside.
Through this door, one could enter the ventilation room.
Nina had the key to this door, but they couldn’t open it from inside.
The arrival of the female reporter was like a gift from heaven.
But the female reporter, Ian, didn’t feel any pleasant surprise, because she didn’t notice anyone in the ventilation room at first glance.
Besides the door to the ventilation room, there were no other entrances to the library on the top floor.
This left the female reporter extremely disheartened.
She thought that after parachuting in, she could enter the library from the rooftop, but now her wish seemed to be in vain.
The courage to risk her life for her ideals, which had just been ignited, had all come to nothing.
Her steps as she approached the ventilation room were light, yet Sani, who was listening carefully to Cheng Daqi’s heartbeat, heard them.
“Cheng, it seems like there’s someone walking.”
Sani’s words made everyone in the dark room tense up.
Footsteps, could it be the gunmen?
The dark room became incredibly quiet, everyone perked up their ears, trying to catch the footsteps that Sani had mentioned.
However, a sound more terrifying than the footsteps also emerged.
In the second-floor corridor, the criminals were opening the doors to different rooms, one by one.
The library was an old building, and the library doors were also the kind where corners had been cut on procurement.
One might understand them as the youth version of doors.
Each door was feeble, a kick from the Hulk could smash one open.
Iron Man followed his steps closely, searching every room on the second floor.
The sound of doors being kicked open grew louder, signaling that the criminals were getting closer, and everybody’s hearts tightened.
The gunfire coming from downstairs wasn’t faked; perhaps some people had already been killed by the criminals.
If the criminals found them…
In comparison to the sound of the doors being kicked open, Ian’s footsteps seemed to lose significance,
but the female reporter Ian had already noticed the protruding central air conditioning ventilation room.
With one hand holding a camera and the other a microphone,
she crouched in front of the ventilation room, observing through the wire mesh.
“Dear viewers, unfortunately, since I don’t have the key to this door, I can’t open it.
Therefore, I can’t enter the library to face the kidnappers and have a chat, which is a real shame,” she said.
“Wait, oh my God!
There seem to be people in this room, do you see that?
There are three heads there!”
Ian’s commentary was so bizarre that it sent chills down the spines of the ABC subscribers watching on their TVs.
What was happening, were the criminals so cold-blooded?
Had they already beheaded hostages in such a short time?
The people in the dark room heard the female reporter’s voice, and through the layers of pipes and wire mesh, they noticed there seemed to be a woman outside.
“Are you guys okay?” Ian asked.
“I have the key to the rooftop maintenance door, let her open it, and we can escape,” Nina said quickly.
The footsteps of the criminals were getting closer.
In the face of life and death crisis, Nina’s mind moved rapidly.
“Give me the key, I’m closest to her,” Ye’er Gubai spoke swiftly.
After receiving the key handed over by Nina, Ye’er Gubai stretched out his arm with all his might, pushing the key in front of the reporter.
“Quick, this key will open the door outside, open it so we can get out!”
“Viewers, these people seem not to have been found by the criminals yet, they have the key to this door, and I can take you inside to see!”
What is a professional journalist?
What constitutes the qualities of a professional journalist?
The female reporter first delivered a spoken report to the camera, and then stretched out her arm to receive the life-saving key handed over by Ye’er Gubai.
Nina pressed against Cheng Daqi’s chest, listening to his heartbeat, which was getting faster by the moment.
Yes, now was the moment that would determine their fate.
In the next second, or maybe in ten seconds, the criminals outside might kick open the door to the central air conditioning vent room.
Or they might kick open the one across first, buying them a few more precious seconds.
Nina cursed under her breath in fear.
“That damned asshole Lao Deng, if he hadn’t skimped on kickbacks and bought better quality doors, those thugs wouldn’t have been able to kick them open so easily.”
No one answered her, no one agreed with her, everyone was praying, praying for the goddess of luck to look their way.
Finally, the female reporter was the first to open the door.
Scott breathed a sigh of relief.
He was the closest to the door; with just a few steps up the ladder, he could get out.
Climbing up with his hands and feet, Scott wanted to leave this place quickly, to escape this dangerous land.
But the space in the dark room was incredibly cramped!
He had to put all his strength into bending his knees and lifting his feet to eke out a little space to shift.
“Sir, may I ask your name?”
Reporter Ian was completely unaware that the criminals in the library were closing in on the dark room where the group was hiding.
After opening the door, the first thing she did was to start a mini-interview with Scott.
Without even glancing at the reporter’s camera, Scott let out a straightforward American curse.
Having no intention of dealing with the reporter, Scott finally lifted his foot and climbed the ladder.
“Bang!”
The Green Giant kicked the door forcefully, detaching it from the frame.
Iron Man entered the central air conditioning vent room, holding a gun.
It seemed like the goddess of luck was generously lifting her skirt, offering a glimpse of the sacred light of salvation, but then she gently laughed and let her skirt fall back into place.
No, you can’t~
The path to salvation was closed!
“Finally found you!
I knew there had to be some smart ones hiding.
Stop immediately!”
Iron Man’s words were ineffective, as Scott’s steps only quickened.
The dark room was hidden behind the pipes, not meant to be noticed or found, thereby earning its name.
But as Scott tried to climb up, his body became exposed beyond the cover of pipes and equipment, visible to the two criminals who had entered.
Frowning and checking the angle, the Green Giant raised his gun and fired.
“Ding!”
The metal ladder broke cleanly upon impact, and Scott fell straight down from it.
“Fuck!” The blonde veteran screamed in agony.
“Huh?”
Poor Kernor, positioned right in the middle of the crowd, used his large black face as a cushion to catch Scott’s buttocks, saving his old companion from harm.
“Are there more people?
Everyone in there, come out!”
Iron Man shouted sternly.
“Mr.
Kidnapper, I’m a reporter from ABC TV, may I interview you?” Ian said fearlessly from outside the door.
“What do we do now?” Nina was at a loss for what to do.
“What can we do, let’s go out,” Ye’er Gubai gave up on resisting.
“Chan, hold me tight!” With courage from who knows where, the black girl quietly spoke.
Not knowing what fate had in store and before death came to claim them, Sani just hoped to spend a bit more time with Cheng Daqi.
A bit longer, even a single second more would be good.
