86: Chapter 14: The Senator’s Son is Worthless!
The Hulk leaned against the wall out of sheer boredom, looking utterly out of it.
But in reality, his eyes never strayed from the doors and windows where cops might enter.
The corner where the Hulk was positioned had the best field of fire in the entire library.
And since he was the best shot among the five of them, he was responsible for this spot.
As a master of American Iaido, he could accurately identify and clear his clip within two seconds.
Being an old structure, the architecture of the library ensured that it was impossible for the police to attack silently from multiple entrances at once.
The Hulk was confident he could take down any cops daring to storm in on the first go!
In just over thirty minutes, Iron Man and Thor had finished setting up the trip mines and timed bombs.
The hostages in the library had, of course, seen the actions of the two kidnappers.
But their cellphones had already been confiscated, and everybody was sticking their butts out as they knelt in the corner—turn their heads, and the Wasp would ruthlessly shoot.
The Wasp wouldn’t kill them outright but let the bullet fly past their bodies.
She would only warn them that if there was a second time, they would be shot dead on the spot.
Under her threats, all the hostages could do was tremble and remain kneeling in the corner with their butts out.
“Thor, you and Wasp take charge of the hostages and, by the way, set up the camera.
Now I’m going to join the Hulk and clear the second floor.”
So far, everything had proceeded very smoothly, with no casualties, so Iron Man’s tone was somewhat relaxed,
It looked like they might actually achieve their objective today!
Meanwhile, outside the library, Klauer was on pins and needles.
He had just heard the news from ABC on the radio a moment ago.
The ABC reporter got the bullshit news from who knows where, claiming that the son of some assemblyman had been taken by the kidnappers.
What a joke!
There are so many assembly members in America—senators, representatives, state assembly members, city council members.
The son of an assembly member is crap!
But the news from reporter Ian had the whole West Coast boiling over.
ABC has considerable influence in California and on the West Coast.
Maybe its influence isn’t that strong across the whole of America, but on the West Coast, it has tens of millions of subscribers.
The son of an assembly member being kidnapped by kidnappers, who are also holding other hostages in a library standoff with the police?
How could such news not attract attention?
All the major social media platforms had already started buzzing with discussions about this kidnapping.
As the person in charge on-site, Klauer was truly burning with anxiety.
Besides the case becoming public knowledge, with more and more Americans now paying attention, the situation inside the library was also far from optimistic.
Klauer felt immense pressure.
The sounds of the Wasp’s gun were just warnings to keep the hostages from moving recklessly.
But the officers outside the library had no idea what was really happening inside.
Klauer was now worried, worried that the kidnappers had started executing people indiscriminately.
Yes, the lives of ordinary hostages certainly weren’t as important as the son of the Democratic Party’s major donor.
But if too many people died, even if the donor’s son emerged unscathed in the end, there was no way this could be chalked up as his achievement.
“Is the black negotiator ready?”
After pressuring his subordinates for the third time, they finally brought Klauer some good news.
“All set.
We’ve coated him with black paint, and now he’s a proper nigger.”
Paint?
Klauer felt a bit shocked and doubtful, “Isn’t that stuff really harmful to the human body?”
Forget it, the situation is urgent.
He’ll just have to give that negotiation expert some extra compensation later.
“Hurry up and let him go negotiate with the kidnappers, tell them to stop killing people!”
“Yes, I’ll arrange it right now.”
The kidnappers were in action, and so were the police.
On the other side, as a person with journalistic ideals, ABC’s female reporter Ian was also on the move.
“Boss, I think I can parachute onto the library rooftop.
Our helicopter is fully capable of doing it.”
“Do you realize what you’re saying?
Such an action could pose a life-threatening risk, baby, I don’t want you to take that risk.”
Hearing that man’s disgusting pet name, Ian felt the goose bumps rise.
“Darling, it’s not often we come across such a big story; I’d regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t try.”
She, too, was a person with dreams.
She wanted to win the Pulitzer Prize, she wanted to become a household name as a reporter, she wanted to capture the most explosive news so that the whole of America would remember her.
Yes, parachuting onto the library rooftop was dangerous, but risk came with opportunity.
Ian knew the danger was significant, but she still wanted to do it.
Because she was aware that such an opportunity might only come once in a lifetime.
She had to consider if this was her one and only chance.
“Alright, you can try, but if your recklessness results in the death of hostages, the TV station will only be able to fire you, do you understand?”
The sleazebag leader’s words made Ian take a deep breath; the capitalist’s face was always so shameless.
No, he wasn’t a capitalist; he was just a capitalist’s dog, but this dog would bark zealously on behalf of capital.
“I understand, Boss.
I won’t let you down.”
Ignoring the strange looks from her colleagues inside the helicopter, she took a portable camera and other interviewing equipment from the photographer’s hands.
Ian put on the parachute vest and connected the safety rope to the rappelling line.
She took a deep breath.
“Lower the altitude.”
Having worked for ABC for more than a decade, the camera helicopter’s pilot had never seen such a reckless reporter,
He cautiously confirmed one more time.
“Are you sure you want to take this risk?
It’s really very dangerous.”
The female reporter smiled and looked out the helicopter window at the cityscape of Saint Rodu.
The city was big, filled with many talented and hardworking people.
Sleeping her way up, she had reached her limit.
To become a better reporter, how could she not risk it all?
“I’m sure, please lower the altitude.”
After saying that, Ian turned to instruct her assistant.
“Have the ground broadcast van and reporters ready with their cameras to capture my parachute onto the library roof.
Put this shot in the live broadcast, the viewers will love it.”
Gru stood with a map in front of the hood of the command vehicle, instructing several subordinates on the key points of the defense.
While it was highly unlikely that they would clash with the kidnappers, they still had to look the part.
Even slacking off had to be done with vigor and spirit!
“Boss, look at that helicopter; it doesn’t seem to be one of ours!” Jax’s voice was surprised and urgent; he had spotted ABC’s helicopter.
Gru turned around, looked up, and gazed toward the sky above the library.
There was a helicopter slowly approaching the rooftop of the library.
“ABC Television!
That’s ABC Television’s camera helicopter.” one of the subordinates recognized the markings on the helicopter and exclaimed.
“These reporters are really risking it all.
Is it worth playing such a high-stakes game just for news?”
