My American magical life -
Chapter 82 - 82 10 The Curtain Rises
82: Chapter 10 The Curtain Rises 82: Chapter 10 The Curtain Rises Cheng Daqi and his group were in an old library that had been around for a while.
Old buildings naturally have many odd and quirky rooms.
They could be cluttered with miscellaneous items or serve strange purposes.
The appearance of a room exclusively for the librarian’s base desires thus seemed reasonable.
Nina, as an employee here, considered the library her home court.
She walked briskly ahead, with Cheng Daqi following behind, full of worries.
Cheng Daqi was extremely anxious, those masked thugs might really come to the library!
No!
That might not be the case!
What if they were just passing by?
Deep down, Cheng Daqi still harbored a sliver of hope.
“Chan, can we first get to the second floor and then jump down to escape?”
As a seasoned refugee, Ye’er Gubai had spent over a decade fleeing across the western part of the Eurasian continent and had extensive experience in running away.
“No, look at the ceiling height here, the height of one floor in the library is at least seven meters, jumping from the second floor would be more than seven meters.”
The one who answered the Arab brother was Scott, a soldier with rich combat experience, who had a very strong sense of judgment when it came to spatial data indoors.
“Not seven meters, it’s eight meters.
Someone jumped from the second floor before and broke their legs,” Nina, walking in front, offered an additional opinion and sealed off the route of leaving from the second floor with a failed case.
Cheng Daqi, on the other hand, had a different idea.
Why jump at all?
Couldn’t they use a rope or something to help them get down?
But he didn’t plan to ask outright.
Nina was clearly heading to the second floor; they had already started climbing the stairs.
The fewer people knew about a possible escape method, the better, preferably only himself and Sani.
If things were impossible, he would just take Sani and leave.
Meanwhile, others who were kept in the dark could serve as targets or obstacles to hold the thugs back, buying time for the two of them to escape.
‘Sani, you must, must act together with me!
We aren’t really acquainted with these people, only working together temporarily, so we can’t truly rely on them.
You must act together with me, no matter what, we shouldn’t be separated.’
Cheng Daqi even sent a message to Sani on his phone.
Sani was walking at the end of the group.
She felt the vibration of her phone and saw Cheng Daqi’s message.
‘OK, we won’t separate.’
Not knowing what Sani was thinking, she actually smiled after sending the message back.
“I was just wondering if we could use something to climb down from a second-floor window, but why does this library’s window have a security mesh!
Damn!” Scott said anxiously.
“So where are we going now, the staircase only goes up to the second floor, are we supposed to go to the rooftop?”
The veteran soldier was somewhat impatient, worried that the thugs might have already entered the library.
What agitated him even more was that the method he thought of might not be feasible!
Seeing that there wasn’t just one smart person, Cheng Daqi could only respond with a bitter smile.
It turned out everyone was thinking of having others buy them time.
“The rooftop is only accessible from the outside.
We’re going to the central air conditioning vent room, a sealed room prepared specifically for the central air conditioning ventilation ducts.
There is a hidden space formed due to the architectural structure amongst the equipment where the six of us can squeeze in if we try.”
As a staff member, Nina knew all too well where they could hide.
Upon hearing Nina’s description, everyone felt secretly relieved, grateful for having a staff member on the team.
With just themselves, how could they have thought of such a hiding spot?
Look at this hiding place, the central air conditioning vent room, a hidden space within the vent room.
It just sounds so reassuringly safe.
“Bang!
Bang!
Bang!”
Just as everyone was beginning to feel at ease, the sound they had most feared finally came from the first floor.
Gunshots from the bandits!
Cheng Daqi painfully closed his eyes, feeling that his luck had run out for the day.
He thought there was a very high chance the bandits wouldn’t come to the library—but they did.
He thought, maybe, just maybe, the bandits might choose a different target and not hit the library—and yet, they headed straight for it!
Why?
There’s nothing but books in a library, right?
America, all I wanted was to live here peacefully for ten days.
Why is that so hard?
First, catching a cold, just beginning to recover, and now facing armed bandits.
A beginner’s mission?
Is this the toughest beginner’s task in history?
The world would not change in the slightest due to Cheng Daqi’s inner torment; things never go entirely as wished.
The screams from downstairs rose and fell in waves, chaotic and varied.
“Ah~yah~ah~yah~ah~”
The noise was unbearable, even the bandits couldn’t stand it anymore.
They chose to raise their guns, pointing them at hostages, gathering everyone together.
“F**k, everybody stand up and squat by the wall!”
Even though they were on the second floor, the bandit’s shouting was so loud, the escape squad of six could hear everything crystal clear.
Nina, already pale-skinned, turned even whiter now.
Shaking with nerves, cold sweat streamed down her body, but the brisk pace of leading the others made her overheat, hot and sweating.
The alternating cold and hot sweats didn’t register with her anymore.
All she wanted now was to go home and comfortably lie on the sofa eating chips.
As for things like the big black Dick, she really didn’t care about them now.
Stopping in front of an inconspicuous door, Nina took out a set of keys, selected one, and tremblingly aimed it at the keyhole.
But she was so nervous and scared that she failed to insert it after several attempts.
Knowing time was a luxury, Cheng Daqi stepped forward, grabbed the keys, and unlocked the door with authority.
As he approached, he pulled Sani from behind; once the door was open, Cheng Daqi pushed her straight into the room with a quick shove.
—————–
Atop ABC Television’s news helicopter, a female reporter was preparing to go live on camera.
As one of America’s leading television stations, ABC always had a unique control over its news content.
Before the bandits and police even started their shoot-out, they had dispatched the news chopper.
A truck robbery, what a story!
Especially since this truck was barreling through downtown, nearly crossing the entirety of Saint Rodu!
In the past, when American police chased vehicles, they were usually regular cars, with the occasional RV being a rare sight.
But who could imagine that the criminals in Saint Rodu could be so innovative?
This time, they not only used the truck to escape, but also the truck’s multiple wheels to crash through several of the police’s spike strips.
The empty truck wasn’t slow, and its rampaging momentum was indeed astonishing; cars it encountered all hurriedly moved out of the way.
It almost allowed the bandits to escape the city limits of Saint Rodu.
The helicopter’s reporter began to broadcast the chase situation on camera.
The noise of the helicopter was loud, and the turbulent air was whipping the female reporter’s hair, but none of these stopped her excitement at catching major news.
“We are currently above the Red Street Library in Saint Rodu, everyone can see the police cars converging from all directions, changing the color of this neighborhood with their flashing lights during the daylight.
But unfortunately, these good-for-nothings still couldn’t stop the kidnappers.
Five kidnappers have entered the library with hostages.
I’m sorry to tell everyone, there are more hostages inside the library!”
She voiced regret, but the female reporter could barely contain her laughter.
Keeping her face firm and controlling her expression, the reporter continued with seriousness.
“Please continue to follow ABC News, as we will be providing a 24-hour live broadcast of the latest updates on this criminal incident.”
