81: Chapter 9 This is so exciting, I think…
America is a country where it’s legal to buy and own guns.
Although the strictness of gun control varies from state to state, you could always get your hands on an automatic rifle when you wanted one.
Cheng Daqi and his companions heard gunfire, which was the sound of an AR15 automatic rifle being fired.
Scott could even determine the specific type of bullet from the sound.
He had returned from Afghanistan, where, before going back to America, he had spent eight years in that terrifying mountainous region.
For eight years, those enemies, some barefoot or wearing sandals, had seen their equipment evolve from workshop-made AKs to AR15s, from improvised land mines and cannon to modern weaponry identical to that of the American troops.
As for who wanted to continue fighting that damn war, Scott was genuinely tired of it.
When he first left, Scott thought he was in great shape.
Far from the war, he had returned to his peaceful hometown.
But for a soldier worn by war, peace was a poison.
Being detached from the environment of front-line troops, he lost the support and companionship of his comrades.
The brutal blow from his family utterly destroyed his hope for the world.
After leaving home and wandering, Scott quickly developed PTSD.
He would be awakened by the chants of Afghans in his dreams, and he would tremble at the sound of gunfire.
Yes, he was not physically injured, but his mental stress had made it hard for him to function.
Those without mental illnesses can never understand the world of those who do.
(Except for “Huwei”)
Seeing that Scott might have been shot, Kernor and Cheng Daqi joined forces to pull him into the library.
After all, a library only has books of little worth, not a bank or jewelry store, so there’s less likelihood of attracting a shooter.
“He doesn’t seem to be bleeding?”
In the panic, the two men were too busy carrying someone to check for Scott’s injuries.
Sani was more considerate.
She noticed that although Scott had been carried into the library like a dead dog, he hadn’t bled at all along the way.
“What’s up with him then?”
Cheng Daqi didn’t quite understand the condition of the blond man either.
Looking fine yet seeming like he was about to croak at any moment.
“What’s happening outside, I heard gunshots!
GOD!”
A library employee in her thirties came over and asked the group gathered at the entrance.
The white female worker was wearing a loose dress with a pattern, but it couldn’t hide the ring of flesh around her belly.
“I heard the gunshots too, but they seemed quite far from us.”
The latter speaker was a man in his fifties who looked like an Arab, with a white cap on his head.
In the library, others were also whispering and inquiring among themselves for news.
Everyone was terrified by the gunfire.
“Not far, it was a fully automatic AR15, firing M885 Ball:62 grain bullets, and because the muzzle was fitted with a honeycomb-type suppressor, it sounded more distant.”
Scott’s voice was soft, and Cheng Daqi’s expression turned grave.
“Sorry, is he alright?
What did he just say?”
The Arab man in his fifties was, however, the quickest to react; he understood what Scott was talking about!
Sani was about to speak, but she felt Cheng Daqi pinch her hand.
The neighbor signaled with his eyes for her to keep quiet.
The black girl was a bit flustered and a bit embarrassed, completely forgetting that she wanted to speak just moments ago.
“Kernor, go get Scott a cup of water, quickly.”
Sending away the simpleton, calming the girl, and now dealing with a madman and two strangers.
There is no small matter when it comes to safety!
If what Scott said was true, Cheng Daqi didn’t think it was a good idea to tell the other library staff.
Collective panic is the hardest to control.
He was sure that Scott’s words would only plunge the crowd in the library into chaos.
“Excuse me, could you help me move my friend to the seats over there?”
Cheng Daqi looked at the Arab man and the female worker with sincere eyes, hoping the two would help him.
On the inside of the library entrance, two small round tables were surrounded by seven or eight stools.
He wanted to confine Scott and the two strangers to this area.
In the face of crisis, the unbreakable golden rule for protecting one’s interests: first control the scope of influence, then reach a small-scale consensus.
“Sure, oh my God, what happened to him, he looks so pale.”
The library staff member was the typical white woman, and she asked with concern about Scott’s condition.
Cheng Daqi answered with a smile.
“My friend might be feeling a bit unwell, he’ll be fine after sitting down for a bit.”
From Scott’s precise judgment just now, Cheng Daqi had already begun to guess about his identity, including the possibility that he might suffer from PTSD.
But Cheng Daqi didn’t say it outright.
Directly stating the fact that Scott had professional military training, along with the earlier professional analysis he’d heard from Scott, might turn the Arab brother into an unstable factor.
So far, whether the shooter would come to the library was uncertain.
If they were really that unlucky, and by a very small chance they encountered him, an orderly crowd could also buy Cheng Daqi time to maneuver.
If the shooter, as was more likely, didn’t come to the library, then Cheng Daqi would rather his concerns were unfounded and he had wasted his thoughts for nothing.
In a crisis, no amount of caution for safety was too much.
As for why not run?
Why not get away from the library directly?
Ha, there are only books in the library, the shooter is very, very unlikely to visit.
Leaving the library and encountering the shooter on the streets was more probable than the shooter coming to the library.
Although Cheng Daqi had never seriously attended any university, his understanding of probabilities had been honed over a decade of social hard knocks!
He was extremely confident in his own judgment!
“Hello, my name is Chan, and this is my friend Scott.”
After sitting down, the Arab brother still wanted to ask the question he hadn’t received an answer to.
Cheng Daqi chose to first draw these two into his own rhythm.
Come, let’s all do a brief self-introduction, and then we can form a temporary small group.
“Nina, I work here.”
“Ye’er Gubai, I’m here to read.”
“The situation seems to be like this…
Ms.
Nina, Mr.
Ye’er Gubai, I suggest we keep this news among ourselves for now, what do you think?”
Sani looked at Cheng Daqi incredulously; she had experienced many shootings, but never someone who considered as much as Cheng Daqi did.
But she had to admit, everything Cheng Daqi worried about and considered made sense.
“Chan, I was called over by Kernor today and thought you were a scammer, but now I feel that I was wrong.
A person like you, even if you were a scammer, wouldn’t target Kernor; you would go after bigger fish with deeper pockets.”
Scott had only sat down for a moment, but his mouth had already been ‘blessed’ by Kernor’s ass.
Cheng Daqi didn’t want to deal with the foul-mouthed man, only earnestly looking at the two strangers.
“Chan, I quite agree with your approach, but I think the urgency of the situation calls for us to find a room to hide in first.”
Ye’er Gubai, over fifty years old, had fled from the Middle East to Europe, and then from Europe to America.
He had been through too much turmoil.
His keenness and vigilance were ingrained in his blood.
“Staying by the door now is unsafe, we need to find a place to hide in case of an emergency, don’t you think, Ms.
Nina?”
Cheng Daqi greatly appreciated Ye’er Gubai’s words and was about to speak when he was interrupted by the Black sister.
“I think we might not need to consider whether the shooter will come or not anymore, look.”
Sani pointed toward a street corner a few dozen meters away.
A van with most of its tires blown out was sprawled across the intersection, blocking all traffic on the street.
There were bullet marks on the windshield, and many more on the rear of the van.
Clearly, the van had just gone through a fierce battle.
Several masked people got out of the van, one of them taking cover on the spot to provide cover for his teammates to move.
The others rushed toward the library.
“Let’s go now, Nina, don’t panic, lead the way first.
Is there somewhere in the library that’s not easy to find?”
Cheng Daqi pulled up Scott and decisively began to lead people away.
Nina, groggy, led the way in front, with Ye’er Gubai and Sani following behind.
“I think…
oh God, this is too exciting, I need to pee!”
“Nina, keep your voice down.
Later on, I can have my Black friend, fuck, you, dead, but for now you need to lead the way!”
“This way, I know a secret spot.
The librarian and his male secretary like to mess around there; nobody would think to look for someone there.”
“Where are you guys going?
Cort, this is some water for you.”
“Idiot, I don’t want water; hurry up over here!”
“My God, he’s really something, did you mean what you promised me just now?”
“I’m begging you, lead the way first.
This isn’t the time for that conversation.”
“Serve, what is she talking about, why is everybody looking at me?”
“We didn’t say anything, we’re looking at you because we like having a reliable friend like you who can offer us such great help when danger is near.”
