Chapter 238: 237 That year’s events, someone carried the burden for her (2 updates)

The man with his mouth covered was still struggling, convinced that he wouldn’t truly dare to kill him under the broad daylight.

But the next second...

Something suddenly pressed against his waist.

That icy metallic touch,

terrified him to the point where his legs gave way, his eyes wide with horror.

Crazy...

Everyone said his young master was mad.

But it was the Hale family that was truly mad.

"Going to keep shouting?" He lowered his voice.

The man immediately shook his head; he wasn’t foolish. The Wells family had paid him; he hadn’t signed his life away. There was no need to lose his life over this. The man let go, and Wyatt Hale immediately stepped forward, grabbed some tape, and sealed his mouth.

He then used zip ties to bind his hands and feet.

It was Wyatt Hale’s first time doing something like this, and though he was clumsy, he was incredibly excited!

The key point was, he was even humming a tune.

The man’s eyes conveyed a defeated resignation.

It was all over.

---

At this moment in the changing room,

Zoe Bell had just taken her clothes out when she heard footsteps. Turning around, she saw Ryan Wells under the harsh light, his facial scars appearing even more ferocious.

"Why is it you?" Zoe Bell frowned, looking utterly bewildered.

"You remember me?"

"This is the women’s changing room; you seem to have come to the wrong place," Zoe said, glancing around as if looking for someone.

"Stop looking, it’s just the two of us here."

Ryan Wells pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, placed one in his mouth, and lit it. Since it was raining outside, the windows of the room were tightly shut, and the strong smell of tobacco slowly began to fill the room.

"What do you want to do!" Zoe gritted her teeth, "This is a hospital, someone could come at any moment."

"Do you really remember me?" Ryan Wells took slow steps toward her.

The smell of smoke grew heavier.

"We last met in the training hall."

Ryan Wells suddenly laughed out loud, "You really did forget me."

"Who the hell are you, if you don’t get out now, I am going to call the police!"

Zoe said as she turned to reach for her phone in the wardrobe, but Ryan Wells closed the door with a swift movement, "Bang—"

He smiled at her.

The smell of smoke instantly sprayed onto her face, making her squint involuntarily.

"Miss Bell, it seems that the rich indeed have short memories."

"I really don’t remember you."

Zoe Bell gripped her cane tightly and turned around, wanting to leave, but with her injured leg, she was slow and struggled to move. Ryan Wells watched her with a smile.

A bold, unsettling smile.

Combined with his fierce, twisted face, it was enough to send shivers down one’s spine.

"Do you still remember Pearl Lopez?" Ryan Wells suddenly mentioned a name.

Zoe stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him, "You know Sister Pearl?"

"Six or seven years ago, when you came to Capital City for a performance, Pearl Lopez invited you for a meal at the Vio Hotel, I was the one who paid the bill."

Zoe was stunned for several seconds.

It seemed she suddenly remembered who he was.

She looked closely at Ryan Wells, yet she felt he didn’t match the person in her memories at all.

"Don’t feel like it’s me?" Ryan Wells took a harsh drag on his cigarette; the hand that pinched the cigarette was uncontrollably trembling again, "No wonder you can’t remember, back then, I wasn’t like this. My eyes were good, no scars on my face or neck, my hands were fine too."

"You were Pearl’s boyfriend?"

"Then you now..." Her expression, innocent and baffled, was also mixed with surprise.

"Isn’t it all thanks to you!"

Ryan Wells suddenly roared at her in anger.

Zoe Bell was visibly frightened, clutching the cane in her hand tightly.

"Damn it!" Ryan Wells took a drag of his cigarette, his hand shaking uncontrollably, causing ashes and sparks to fall, "If it weren’t for me, would I have ended up like this?"

"Neither human nor ghost!"

"Just a cripple."

"Because of me?" Zoe Bell furrowed her brow, "We’ve only met once, and moreover, that night... I drank too much afterward, I really can’t remember what happened."

"What a line, ’I can’t remember’!" Ryan Wells laughed loudly, "Do you mean to tell me you don’t know William Hale?"

"I just met him this year."

Zoe Bell spoke earnestly.

Her lychee eyes, so innocent, so guiltless, only agitated Ryan Wells further.

"Back then, he crippled me for you, almost took my life, and you claim you don’t know him? Who would believe such a thing if you said it?"

"What I’m saying is the truth!"

"Quit your bullshit!" Ryan Wells snuffed out his cigarette.

"After that night, Sister Pearl withdrew from the public eye, and it surprised us all."

In Zoe Bell’s memory, because Mr. and Mrs. Bell wanted to keep her tied to their side and under control, they seldom allowed her to travel. That was her first trip to Capital City for an exchange performance after reaching adulthood.

Pearl Lopez was the prospective lead dancer of a renowned Ballet troupe in Capital City back then, beautiful and kind, and she took especially good care of them.

After the performance, she even offered to take them out to dinner.

Most people went, and Zoe Bell didn’t want to but found it hard to decline the invitation.

Then, Ryan Wells showed up.

Claiming to be her boyfriend.

He wasn’t particularly handsome, but presumably due to his status and wealth, he was very generous, especially kind to Pearl Lopez, to the envy of many girls in the troupe.

At an adult’s dinner party, alcohol was inevitable.

Everyone was drinking, and if Zoe Bell hadn’t joined in, she would have stood out, so she drank a little too.

"It’s fine if you get drunk, we don’t have a performance tomorrow, and this wine is specially brought by my boyfriend. It costs tens of thousands per bottle, something you normally can’t have," Pearl Lopez said smilingly.

"If you’re drunk, he has booked rooms in the hotel, and everyone can go there to rest."

This was a five-star hotel, reputed to be very costly for just one night’s stay.

The girls in the Ballet troupe envied Pearl Lopez’s good fortune in finding such a generous boyfriend. With many people around and most being acquainted, and following a successful performance, it was hard not to indulge a bit more.

Perhaps because she seldom drank, just one glass made Zoe Bell feel dizzy.

She tried to stay awake and clear her head...

But eventually, she still lost consciousness.

When she woke up, she was lying on a big bed in the hotel, alone, but her clothes were intact and only a hint of alcohol lingered, which made her sigh in relief.

She thought she was in a room booked by Pearl Lopez’s boyfriend, and didn’t think much of it.

After a quick wash, she returned to the Ballet troupe.

She found that everyone was in a similar state, having drunk too much and woken up in the hotel.

Since nothing untoward had happened, no one thought much of it.

Once the performance was over, she followed the Ballet troupe back to Greenland.

She later heard that Pearl Lopez had left the Ballet troupe, unreachable by anyone, and had vanished from the circle altogether.

It was during the prime of her career, and rumors had it that she was set to become the lead dancer of the troupe by the next year.

Her sudden retirement led to much speculation.

Though many guessed she might have married her wealthy boyfriend, there were also rumors she was pregnant and could no longer dance; in any case, there was a lot of gossip.

At this moment, Zoe Bell looked at the ghastly scar on Ryan Wells’s neck and seemed to suddenly realize:

That ordinary night in her memory...

Something might have happened that she was unaware of!

There was something wrong with Pearl Lopez that night;

There was something wrong with the wine;

The man before her had issues as well.

But all of this had been taken care of for her by someone else.

"That night, William Hale saved you, too bad he’s abroad now. Afraid he can’t save you today," Ryan Wells laughed wildly.
