Chapter 40: What If It’s You?
Chapter 40: What If It’s You?
The tense air between them crackled for longer as AiLin hesitated on placing her hand on the chopsticks. She knew she is being harsh. She doubted that all Li ZiChen wanted from her was her help in his plan against her birth grandmother. But she needed to spare him from the pain of loving someone who wouldn’t love him back. A woman who is already too broken beyond words. Well she doubted he would also think about marrying her if she consider her own tremulous fact and the truth that she had aborted her baby.
Whatever.
Sometimes when you reject other’s feelings for you, you would also feel a hint of guilt.
She decided to mark the ache in her heart as guilt and went on to picking her food with the chopsticks. It tasted so good earlier but now it tasted a bit... bland.
DURURU RURURU
AiLin’s eyes shifted to the loud ringing that came from Li ZiChen’s phone. He let out a heavy sigh and placed his hand on top of the call, muting it. Seeing that he hesitated because of her made her to purse her lips a little, "Uh, you can pick the call."
Li ZiChen’s jaw tightened while he stared at her. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. He stood up and pick the phone to his hand, "I’ll be taking the call outside."
AiLin smiled but Li ZiChen only furrowed his eyebrows upon seeing her smile. He walked away and she watched as his broad back disappearing behind the closed wooden door. She sighed as she placed down the chopsticks and pulled her own phone to her hands. There she saw a miss call from Canary. She could guess already what Canary had called her for, she must be worried as she went off the radar. She quickly typed her message, telling her best friend that she would be late but she would come home soon and for the call to be returned at a later hour.
Not long after, Li ZiChen came back to the dining room. His expression looked even worse when he sat down on the chair. His arms flexing as if he was holding back the urge to hit someone. For the first time, AiLin saw that behind those smile was a man who someone should really be thinking twice before trying to mess with. Li ZiChen’s back seemed to steam from anger, his fingers continuing to flex from a loose palm into a fist as if he was taught to do so to reign himself in control of his own anger.
"Was it something important?" AiLin proceeded on making a small talk. Sure enough he looked so scary but somehow she felt confident that anger would never be directed to her. After all she had turned him down coldly earlier but he didn’t bring up about dissolving their contract. Well either he was controlling his anger or that he was simply prioritizing his plan over his feelings.
"Some fool trying to beg me for help," Li ZiChen said as he then received another loud ringtone. He picked the phone up and in anger almost seemed as if he was going to toss it down the floor. Instead he placed his phone inside a glass full of water and crossed his arms.
AiLin narrowed her eyes at the action, "Seems like that person is someone you really hate."
"Possibly one of the people I wish to be gone but I haven’t dipped my hands into murder. I only think that one should only do an action that they wouldn’t mine anyone else done to them."
Yet. That was an important keyword isn’t it.
Li ZiChen then tapped the table with his fingers, attracting her attention to him again, "Back to what we were saying."
There was still something else to talk about? She had thought he was upset and stopped there and then.
It seemed the call infuriate him so much that his head became clear again as Li ZiChen then gathered his peaceful manner again and seemed rather smiley.
"Is there anything else I should keep in mind before we progress?" Li ZiChen inquired back at her which she took in some time to think about.
"I think just the usual."
"Such as?"
"Such as no abuse of words, physical, or mental."
"You really believe that I’d hit you?" Li ZiChen scowled upon her words. "I’d doubt I’ll do anything of those. Mental torture isn’t something that I am particularly fond to do either."
AiLin turned her eyes to the corners as she took a bite and mutter to herself, "Well you know men and women— young and old, by that all humans, are a bit too difficult to trust with just words."
"So action is what you need to see from me," Li ZiChen hummed and he nodded, "I noted that down. Anything else? No feeling, no abuse, and?"
AiLin frowned. This was really accommodating or is it because she had been with people that doesn’t give her love or abuse her that she find this very much a big privilege to get from a contract?
"What do YOU want from me?" AiLin asked instead and Li ZiChen chuckled.
"Well a few things. Let’s start by talking about this ’cold business like’ emotion that you want from me to have in our relationship," Li ZiChen pointed out. AiLin was quite apprehensive upon the offer he started his conversation with. It seemed as if he was thinking how to calculate his words which is concerning. "If I give you a present because of a viable reason would that be counted as doing too much?"
AiLin frowned at the question. "I think it does."
"I think it does not. I give bonuses to my workers who had done well. Take for example the chauffeur who had drove us here. He’s been doing great so I paid for his children’s college tuition."
AiLin raised her eyebrows. So he does give his money to people in need. It makes her feel more suspicious as Li ZiChen barely have a flaw that was dangerous to her. If he was a color he’d be a peaceful blue but how could a person be nice to her, not want a thing from her, and wouldn’t hurt her? He’s even good to the people around him.
Too suspicious.
"So there are boundaries that we need to make clear here which you seem to have not make any thoughts about. After all, it is not my fault that you were the one who read too much into a simple ’business bonus’ that I give to my partner, right?" Li ZiChen then chuckled at her defeated expression as she seemed to realize that she was reading too much into his action. It’s as if she had gotten a cold water down her throat and now felt slightly vexed, "What about if this business relationship we share fails because someone else develop a feeling?"
Her lips were pursed and she almost pouted. Still not seeing the trap in his honeyed voice, she shrugged her shoulders, "Someone else? There are only two of us."
"Exactly two of us. If it’s not me then it’s you," he pointed his finger to her happily. "What if it’s you who started to develop a feeling? I’ll be damned and lose my side of the agreement no?"
