Chapter 272: A Breakthrough
Chapter 272: A Breakthrough
"99 percent..."
Li ZiChen had sat in the hospital room and beside him was Li JingYi, his younger brother who had quickly returned from abroad upon hearing that he was going to take a few days away from work, leaving his work to JingYi’s hands.
Li JingYi was in a panic at first, wondering what had gotten so badly that his brother would even stop his works and take leave only to find out that there was a child who they knew who had been kidnapped and was now in emergency state. That same girl turn out to be... his own niece.
With mouth wide open, Li JingYi scanned the paper twice. Thrice. Four times. Until he couldn’t take it anymore and had pulled a highlighter he always brought with him along with a pen, lining the document multiple time.
"Brother..." JingYi nervously turned toward him, "This... This number is nine and another nine, I didn’t see it wrong right? No, no, no, no, this girl isn’t related to AiLin but a 99% match to your DNA! She’s... your daughter?"
Flinching from panic, he shot to his feet, pacing back and forth, "But how can that be brother? Oh God! You have always been innocent. Someone must have tricked you into this! But how could we explain this to AiLi? That you have a daughter? What if she doesn’t listen to you and run away instead? Don’t hide this from her, instead let’s think for a way to break this news to he- what’s this document? You want me to see it?"
Li JingYi took the paper that his brother had extended after the previous one. He scanned it, this time it was LiAi’s and AiLin’s DNA test that once again made Li JingYi to flinch like a fish out of the water.
He shook the paper around as if it was going to change anything, pushing his face close to the paper and bringing the other one to his face.
"April fool. This must be an April fool’s joke right?"
"It’s November JingYi," YanLan reminded and looking back at YanLan he couldn’t bring his mouth that had gaped wide to a close.
"So you are saying that I have a niece."
YanLan nodded at the startled JingYi.
"My niece shares my brother’s blood."
YanLan nodded again in cue.
"She also shares AiLin’s blood?"
Slowly, YanLan nodded, knowing that JingYi was going to overreact exactly as he had also done the same an hour ago.
"OH GOD! YOU TWO HAVE CHILDREN IN SUCH A SHORT TIME WITHOUT ME KNOWING?!"
YanLan couldn’t bear his stupidity any longer and hit him on the head, yelling, "That’s not it! Do you think with their relationship that had just happened for half a year AiLin will suddenly have a child who is almost seven year old so easily?! She’s not a mutant!"
"So you two had children six years ago?!" JingYi stared at Li ZiChen whose face was drained from blood, as he was also trying to reel reality. Seeing his brother in such a state, JingYi bent his knees and crouched in front of his older brother, "So, so, so, so this was the reason why you were searching for AiLin? Because you knew that-"
"-I didn’t know," Li ZiChen cut him off, turning to face him, "I didn’t know that child was also my child."
Jing Yi smiled and shook his head, his eyebrows squirming around, "That makes no sense right? How can someone sleep with another person and forget what he had done? That would be too impossible to believe- oh no, it happened? You didn’t know? You slept with your crush and you forgot?! Oh brother! Oh brother, have you drunk something weird when you were in highschool? Potions that could delete memories maybe?"
Li ZiChen also questioned himself why he couldn’t remember anything. He did remember there was only one time in his life where his memories weren’t completely clear. That day he told himself that he had to go to AiLin’s school as her bullies had gotten out of control with how their bullies have gotten.
But that same day he was high with fever, something that doesn’t happen too often but once it does, it affect him badly. Though despite that, he pushed himself to move to her room, drinking medicine on his way to her school and by the time he came to it he woke up as a janitor had found him unconscious and that same janitor quickly called an ambulance for him to leave.
That day. That day he regretted it so much for being sick. All because in that same day AiLin was locked with Bai HaiZe and eventually was forced to sleep with him.
This he remembered happening. He remembered it far too well.
So was this what had happened?
Suddenly he stilled, recalling something. He then pushed his hands to his forehead and exhaled a heavy sigh which made both Yanlan and Jingyi to look at each other nervously. There were fears in their eyes as well as worry as they were never in such a position and doesn’t know what to do to help Zi Chen.
JingYi patted his older brother’s shoulders, saying, "Well even though you didn’t know that she had existed for so long it doesn’t matter anymore now does it?"
Li ZiChen turned to his brother who had became wiser with his words.
Li JingYi smiled, "Mother and father will be happy hearing this. They will be shocked like you but they would be happy having a granddaughter. As odd as it might be, deep down aren’t you happy that you have a daughter that shares both your blood and sister AiLin?"
"Then it doesn’t matter! You can’t change the past but you can improve the future, for now focus on staying by LiAi’s side, I’m actually shocked but also very happy to know I’m an uncle now. Everyone will welcome LiAi with open hands and she might be confused but it will all work out soon."
Li ZiChen couldn’t help but break into a smile. Most of the time people had always said JingYi to be the second best, and at times even there were family members who wouldn’t hesitate when openly showing their discrimination toward him.
But even with that, JingYi had grown to be a positive young man who was a bit too trustworthy to others but rather someone with a positive outlook that would always look at the better things. This was a quality he was glad he didn’t have as it fitted his brother more than himself.
Reaching out his hand, Zi Chen placed it on top of JingYi’s head, ruffling his hair a little, "You’re right. The future is better to focus on than the past."
"Right?" JingYi smiled with all his teeth shown. "Now that being said, you can go to rest brother!"
"No, I’ll stay here," he answered and looked to the window outside the hospital, "But YanLan I have to ask you to do something for me."
Meanwhile Canary who hadn’t caught light of what had happened was woken up from her slumber when phone began to vibrate beside her ears.
She lazily pushed herself to sit up, dragging the phone with her nails. Then her eyes stared at the name presented in it, reading it to be "That weirdo Young Master with rich bottomless pocket".
She sighed and pulled the phone to her ears, "Yeah?"
"Good morning, Miss Canary. It seems that you are still asleep. You still sound very attractive even during such moment."
"What do you want, Young Master to this humble little loanshark?" she mumbled, eyes squinting at the morning sun bleeding through her curtains.
There was a soft chuckle on the other end. "You’re in a good mood. That’s rare. Did something good happen last night?"
"Yeah," she deadpanned, "I dreamt I threw my phone into the ocean and never heard your voice again."
"How tragic," he replied, completely unfazed. "And here I thought we were becoming friends."
"Friends don’t wake friends up at—" she checked her phone, "-It’s fucking five in the morning. Spit it out. What do you want?"
"Well," Su HaTan answered her, "You see, Miss Canary I need your help. There is something that I just found two minutes ago and I realized that without your help, I don’t think I’ll be able to do it myself."
Canary pushed herself to stand with a frown, "Is it dangerous?"
"Slightly, but you will surely help me won’t you?"
"tsk, you better pay me a lot," Canary tied her hair into a ponytail, turned the TV on when the news rolled about a kidnapping that had happened. She stood for a moment, looking at the news. It’s said that there was a daughter of a wealthy family being kidnapped but it never mentioned which family had suffered the misfortune. In odd turn of events, it seems the child was also saved which ended the news ambiguously.
Just as Canary was about to walk toward the door and leave, she suddenly wondered if the text she had sent to AiLin last night had been answered but when she checked she saw the numerous messages sent to her, all coming from her best friend AiLin.
She immedaitely told Su HaiTan, "I don’t think I can go today, young master. My friend is in trouble."
