Chapter 270: Father, Mother, Uncle
AiLin could see between her tears how at once those words Xiao MuChen had said riled Li ZiChen. He wasn’t patient and while he had been a patient man when he had comforted her, he was over the edge ready to explode and Xiao MuChen had pressed the wrong button in him, enough to set him off. He marched over, cutting their distance in matters of seconds before reaching out his hands around Xiao MuChen’s collar, slamming his body to the wall.
Many other nurses were surprised along with AiLin who immediately rushed toward them and used her hand to separate the two. But Li ZiChen was unmoving and she couldn’t move him at all, "Stop it. ZiChen it’s not the time for this."
"No," Li ZiChen refused her for the first time. Looking to her eyes he narrowed them, gritting his teeth he sighed as he turned his eyes to glare at Xiao MuChen, "You’re a good talker aren’t you? A good actor I know but also a good one in riling up others so tell me Xiao MuChen, who are you to tell me that I am not capable of protecting a young girl? What have you done to make you think that you’re more capable than me?"
"Zi Chen," she tried to call him but it didn’t help. It also didn’t help that Xiao MuChen was angry and had found li ZiChen to be the perfect person to vent on as he had let out a sharp sarcastic scoff,
"LiAi can live a normal life, she can do what she wants without the scrutiny of others or be in a position envied by so many others but still so dangerous that she could put her to death!"
"I’m strong and I know what to do to protect my family," Li ZiChen pointed out, "What can you offer that I cannot?"
At that, Xiao MuChen felt that his words struck a nerve and lashed out, "Fuck you! I offered everything for LiAi’s future. I would die for her-"
"I DONT CARE," Lu ZiChen yelled, his voice echoing through the hallway that made everyone to shudder. He shut his eyes, trying to calm his coursing anger but his gritted teeth said otherwise, "Do you think that the person who had given birth to her wouldn’t want to take care of her? Do you think— just because you had raised LiAi— that you could have control over whether she should meet her real mother or not? What about AiLin? What about the nightmare she had to endure?"
AiLin could see Li ZiChen’s face that had gotten severe and only now understood that he wasn’t mad for his own sake rather he was mad because he had seen her suffering and was upset to see her forced to give up on LiAi, worse if LiAi had turned to be her daughter she had thought she lost.
Li ZiChen let out a heavy exhale, "You could take LiAi’s custody and pretend AiLin was never in her life if she had really abandoned LiAi cold heartedly but you didn’t know what had happened to her. You don’t know that she had to drink medicines to sleep, that she would sometimes turn listless and has trauma episodes when thinking about her child. You don’t know that while you celebrate LiAi’s birthday, AiLin was crying there— wishing that she hadn’t lost her daughter! Her child was robbed from her and you are no different than those robbers."
AiLin could only look at Xiao MuChen whose face looked as if he had been struck on the cheeks. His mouth gaped and his eyes in shambles as if he had just realized the magnitude of LiAi’s loss in AiLin’s life. He clutched his arms and looked at the ground, as if ashamed, "But LiAi would be in danger."
"From who?" AiLin asked him, her voice broke a little, "You keep worrying, fearing, as if you know the person who would hurt LiAi. But who is it, MuChen? Why do you think that we won’t be capable of protecting LiAi?"
"Back then, six years ago you weren’t capable. How could you be capable now?" Xiao MuChen inquired only to hear a loud laugh from Li ZiChen who had ruffled his hair.
His eyes looked at the ceiling and for a moment the laughter died on his lips, replaced with something deadly. Thankfully he was able to pull himself together and dropped his malicious thoughts, looking back at Xiao MuChen as he answered slowly, "High school." He said the keyword and added, "We were in high school back then Xiao MuChen. We were far too busy trying to protect ourselves, we haven’t learned how to protect others and we haven’t gotten the power to do so but do you think that now and the past would be the same again? Let’s not keep the bullshits here okay? The reason why you refuses to admit the truth is because you’re scared that LiAi would be taken from you and that you would be alone. A fine pathetic and cowardly man aren’t you? One who doesn’t care if others would suffer as long as they weren’t going to suffer."
Xiao MuChen flinched as he couldn’t say anything back. He was holding LiAi back, holding her from meeting her real family because... perhaps because he didn’t want to be alone. After losing his brother and sister in law, the only family left for him was LiAi. He was being unreasonable and he knew it, he was also being cruel by using the sharpest words, reminding AiLin of her past failure when she was just eighteen back then. The truth is...
He slowly turned his eyes to face AiLin, finally seeing her eyes filled with tears. A look of a mother who was worried and fearful but at the same time her face was far too young looking. She looked like someone who had just entered the work force, someone trying to make a new life and move from the past. Someone innocent whose suffering was always caused by others while being pressed between a boulder and a rock.
She wasn’t...
He had heard it, heard from her she was bullied, and heard from her how she has suffered abuses from her own family. He doubted that such family would be welcoming to a child born outside of marriage so even if he had gotten his judgements clouded, he could tell that they were the one who had abandoned LiAi, not AiLin herself.
He couldn’t run away from facing the truth anymore and slowly pulled his legs toward his chest, pressing his head toward his knees, "Then what am I supposed to do? That monster, Elder Hua had already took my brother’s life. Only after he’s dead that she stopped all her cruelty, putting LiAi’s in danger. She is even more hateful toward you and ZiChen and when she found out about your daughter— knowing her hatefulness toward girls— LiAi will suffer."
"I will make sure that doesn’t happen," Li ZiChen said, bending his knees to reach out his hand toward Xiao MuChen. They were all in pain and full of wounds. While he feels that Xiao MuChen was being unreasonable for stopping AiLin to see LiAi, he was still the one who had took care of LiAi when they couldn’t and that deserves more than just a praise or reward, but rather a deep respect. He also knew that Xiao MuChen was at ill ease, worrying about LiAi and he had to make sure that he knew that danger wouldn’t ever be able to touch her. "I will make sure that LiAi would never be in danger and that no one will separate you from her. I can promise you that."
AiLin could see the change in Xiao MuChen’s earlier look. He then turned his eyes to her, tears at his eyes as he sincerely spoke, "I’m sorry. I thought what I did was right."
AiLin shook her head, pulling a smile though her eyes were still red and bloodshot, "I am happy that there is someone who had cared for LiAi so much. That she wasn’t alone or that she had suffered, and that she... had a wonderful childhood."
Xiao MuChen then turned to Li ZiChen, taking his hand that was reached out with a tight grip before being helped to stand on his feet. He then awkwardly straighten his shirt but took a glimpse to Li ZiChen, "I was harsh with my words, I’m sorry."
"Apologies accepted," Li ZiChen answered but didn’t return back any apologies which made him raise his eyebrows but before they could talk it out the doctor walked outside of the ICU in his green gown. His gloves had been washed clean but there was a splatter of blood on his gown enough to alert the three of them.
AiLin rushed, "How is LiAi’s condition doctor? Is she alright now? Is there anything we could do?"
"Calm down, Miss AiLin," the doctor answered gently as he turned to the three anxious people, "We were successful in our effort, LiAi is in a safe condition now."
