Chapter 268: A Toy In a Box

The men faltered around, recognizing Li ZiChen’s face at once. They couldn’t understand, understand why would someone like him be here when it was supposed to be Xiao MuChen who was here, trying to negotiate with them. No. Even Xiao MuChen wasn’t supposed to be here, their warehouse was located so far away from the town and hidden deep inside the mountain. No lights, no traces! So how?!

Their eyes darted around but the boss pulled his gun, aiming it over to Li ZiChen’s man who was standing on his left. But before he could aimed for long, the gun on his hand suddenly loosened as a bullet had already pierced through his wrist, causing him to cry in pain.

"They aren’t much," Taiyo said, pulling his gun to his mouth before blowing an air over it, "I was wondering what could cause my brother to be wounded but as I thought it wasn’t their strength but rather the car, haha."

"Taiyo," Li ZiChen said before turning away. His face was as dark as the night sky in the forest without a single star shining through. His lips pursed and the anger that bubbled on his veins seemed to be laced with a poison that would cause him to explode in anger altogether.

"Yes boss?" Taiyo kept his polite tone though he was smirking as he looked at the fearful kidnappers who seemed to have come and realized who they had just messed with and what kind of hell they were about to see due to their own stupidity.

"Leave none of them alive," Li ZiChen answered, pulling his gun and placing in to the strap around his waist. "They’re much weaker than the ones you fought usually, you can clean them up, can you?"

"Of course~" Taiyo then sang out, "Are you going to search for the girl?"

"Yes," and without further words, Li ZiChen walked outside, ordering the rest of the men to find LiAi as he had seen her not inside the warehouse at all.

Left behind, Taiyo hummed as he pulled his other gun and spoke while looking at the men, "You see, I’m not fond of having a twin so much. Having a little brother is annoying, don’t you agree? Following you everywhere, crying when you flick his forehead, and always begging for attention- oh so annoying," he then gripped his gun and aimed it toward the two men while his own subordinates armed themselves with their weapons, ready to attack.

"But I don’t tolerate seeing him wounded," Taiyo spoke, his words as vicious as a snake’s poison. "Only I can hurt and bully him. If everyone else does, death is their only answer you see."

"Stop the bullshit," the boss whose hands were still bleeding cut off, "If you want to fight, fight! You don’t know who we are and what we could do and once you do- you will regret it. I can promise you that!"

"Oh so frightening," cried Taiyo in a fake cry but when he dropped his hands that he pulled to cover his frightened face, his smile grew wicked as he walked forward. "Don’t regret what you ask."

Meanwhile, Li ZiChen who had rushed outside had to put down the men that were walking all around the warehouse. He had looked inside the building, searching for the little girl to no avail and then he looked to the forest, catching the glimpse of a killed bear and the men who was also killed in casualties. The ones who survived were also taken down by him.

He looked over the bear, narrowing his eyes as he was about to rip it apart and check the contents of its stomach but was relieved when his men had yelled, "Boss! This one says that he has information on the girl."

"Bring him," he ordered and within minutes, his men dragged a few more men whose head was bent down, tears streaming their eyes as there were blood splatters on his left cheeks, the ones that his friends had left him before shot to death. Fearing li ZiChen, the man stammered.

"W- we didn’t see the girl! We tried to protect her really-" he cried, fearing he would be shoot down next. The kidnappers like him who are mostly newbies only were told to wait and guard the girl. They were not taught how to kill or what to do if they were attacked by people like Li ZiChen’s own men, they only thought that what they had to do was protect the girl until given time, get the money and run away. Not only were they weak and can’t fight, they can’t even use the guns given by their boss as they were never a full fledged kidnappers like their boss.

This was akin to rabbits fighting against trained wild tigers. Whatever they do, they wouldn’t be able to protect themselves in face of this kinds of opponents!

Li ZiChen stepped forward, his gaze colder than the steel of the gun at his waist. The man trembling before him choked on his own breath, his knees buckling under the weight of terror.

"You tried to protect her?" Li ZiChen repeated, his voice quiet, almost thoughtful. Then, in a blur of motion, he grabbed the man by the collar and yanked him forward, forcing him to meet his eyes. "Then tell me. Where is she?"

The man shook violently, his breath gasping for more as fear caught his lungs like a vice. He couldn’t dare to see li ZiChen eye to eye, fearing that darkness pooling inside his eyes.. "S.. She ran into the forest! We tried to stop her, I swear! But she, she was fast, too fast, so we couldn’t catch her and then the bear—"

Li ZiChen’s grip tightened. "And then?"

The man swallowed hard, teeth stammering on each other as he held himself from keeping over. "It.. it attacked one of us! She used the chance to escape deeper into the woods. We... we didn’t find her after that and could only find her shoes over- over there... The forest at night is—"

A sickening crack echoed as Li ZiChen threw the man across the floor, sending him sprawling onto the dirt and hitting the tree near them. "Useless." He clicked his tongue and then turned to his men, his voice sharp as he knew he couldn’t spare any more time dawdling. LiAi was far too young and such a little girl was weak against many situation in this forest. The bear, the cold, and the terrain. "Find her. Now."

"YES BOSS!" His men then scattered without hesitation, disappearing into the darkness of the trees, moving faster than the wild animals so they could find even a glimpse of the little girl. Li ZiChen exhaled slowly, his hands clenching at his sides. He didn’t have time for this, not this charade. Every second wasted was another second that girl was alone, lost, and vulnerable yet he couldn’t figure out where she is, not when the forest was too dark. But to wait until the morning arrive? That’s even more foolish. Behind him, the remaining kidnappers whimpered, some still kneeling, while there were others frozen in place, too afraid to move, holding their tears back as they smelled how the air was thick with the scent of blood, gunpowder, and fear.

Taiyo’s voice broke through the tense silence. His hands were free from blood but his face was half covered in it. "You’re really in a bad mood tonight, boss." He strolled forward, stepping over one of the corpses without a second glance. His gun was still in his hand, lazily as he tapped the edge of his gun to his shoulders. "Don’t worry. If she’s in the forest, we’ll find her."

Li ZiChen didn’t reply. His eyes remained fixed on the trees ahead as he thought of the places where LiAi could be. Such young girl would be frightened to death in her place but LiAi had ran away. Though perhaps not out of fear, maybe to find for help. If that’s the case, the clever girl must have hid around the forest and went to find a path where it could lead her to the main road.

With that thought, Li ZiChen walked slowly to the edge of the hill, his eyes filled with fury as he retraced what a young g girl like LiAi would do in such situation.

Taiyo sighed dramatically, not knowing what’s going inside Li ZiChen’s head as he continued. "You’re no fun when you’re pissed." He then turned to the remaining captives, his smirk returning. "Well, boys, I’d love to sit around and chat, but my boss gave the order and plus~ I do hate leaving things unfinished~ things like witnesses?~"

The last thing the kidnappers saw was the glint of Taiyo’s gun before the night was filled with gunfire.

Meanwhile, Li ZiChen continued his thought as he walked through the forest. It was eerily silent, save for the occasional rustle of leaves as Li ZiChen moved swiftly through the undergrowth. His eyes scanned the ground, searching for any sign of her, footprints, broken twigs, anything. Then, he spotted it. The lone red shoes and the hill beside it. When he thought of LiAi who must have walked quietly, his jaw clenched. If she was injured—

A sound. A faint shuffle.

He turned sharply, gun raised.

And there, half-hidden behind the trunk of an old tree, the young girl whimpering in pain, little LiAi!
