Chapter 265: Bears Attack

Little LiAi shook her head when the men said that they were going to shove her to the box and she quickly hid toward the walls which made the men to laugh, thinking her fearful behavior funny and better yet, stupid.

The men then turned around and began chattering, "Did you hear about that club?"

"The club that was caught selling drugs right?" the other man answered, "Yeah wasn’t it brought to the police’s attention because of the gang group Moon- something?"

"Isn’t it weird?" someone else questioned, "I heard a lot about that gang and their members. What I know is that though everyone is so scared of them, there hadn’t been a time when they really attacked a group out of greed. Instead they were always there to protect civilian which is odd. They are gang members right? Why save the civilians?"

"It is weird," the members agreed. One of the men let out a dry chuckle. "Maybe they just like playing hero."

Another scoffed. "A gang full of thugs playing knights in shining armor? Give me a break."

"But it is strange," the first man insisted, lowering his voice slightly. "I heard their leader is brutal, not just brutal but really brutal, brutal enough that I heard even OuYang the club owner is currently living in hell in the prison. No one crosses him and lives. He also choses his prey based on what they have done, more like a police than a gang. But at the same time, they don’t just go around wrecking havoc like other gangs do. It’s like they follow some weird code... like someone who leads them live a rather double life."

Another man snorted. "You sound like you admire them."

"Well they are admirable, if you think about it," the first man continued, crossing his arms. "Most gangs only care about money, power, and territory. But these guys? They take down criminals, and those corrupt clubs, human traffickers. They’re like a fucking vigilante group. Admirable but a bother to us who works in this field."

Another man let out a low chuckle. "So what are you saying? That the guy running them is some kind of secret superhero?"

"I doubt. Superheros don’t harm people but those who crossed the white moonlight? They are either dead or forever turn into a disabled man."

"Well it doesn’t matter," their boss said, rolling his eyes with his arms pulled over his chest, "As long as they won’t be going against us, we have no care for those people. They can do what they want and we will do what we want. As simple as that."

Manager Gou who was hearing their conversation tapped his shoes impatiently, dragging his cigarette and blowing out the gray smoke from his mouth. Then he turned to the left, frowning as the little girl who was there was gone, turning into nothing but the freshly cut rope.

"NO! NO! SHE’S GONE!"

All the man immediately jumped into action when they heard Manager Gou’s loud yell. Their eyes shift around the room to the place where LiAi was crawling at and when they saw how she was gone, their expression turned severe.

"Find her!" Manager Gou barked, his voice sharp with panic. This warehouse they were in was far too close to the forest. If LiAi dies before they could get the money, all of them would be fucked! He couldn’t have her running away, not to her death nor for safety.

In alert, all the men scrambled, overturning the entire room. They yanked open dusty cabinets, and scanned the dark corners of the warehouse, they search every nook and cranny for the girl’s trace, even if it was her hair, nothing was missed. But there was not even a single trace of LiAi as if she had turned into one with the air.

"She’s small and with her conditions, tired and exhausted, she couldn’t have gone far," one of them muttered, shining a flashlight under a table. "She must be still inside this building somewhere."

Another man cursed under his breath, clicking his tongue and angrily kicked the table near him, "How the hell did she get herself free from it? That rope was tight! Even adults couldn’t free themselves from it. What is she?"

"She’s a kid, chill. She’s somewhere here and we will find her, she can’t run away for too far." another snapped.

Manager Gou crushed his cigarette under his shoes, his teeth gritting tight as he bite down his trembling lips in anger, "If we lose her, we’re dead. Do you understand? DEAD! That girl is a fast runner, we shouldn’t only look here but outside. The forest is famous for their bears, we will be fucked if she’s mauled to death by some wild animals first."

The stress of his words sent a new wave of urgency through them. They knew exactly what he meant as they haven’t gotten even a single cent from her father. If they failed to find the girl before they could threaten her as a hostage, the consequences would be kidnap and murder without a single payment.

"Shut the doors. Lock down the exits," The boss of the kidnappers ordered. "Half of you, go outside and search for that girl. NOW!"

The man rushed to do what was ordered. Some rushed to the warehouse entrance, yanking the heavy metal door shut with a loud clang. The others had ran from the room, making their way toward the outside of the forest to search for her.

Meanwhile, little LiAi clung to the shadows, pressing herself tightly against the back of an old tree far inside the forest. Her small hands trembled as she covered her mouth, trying to silence her rapid breathing that kept slipping from the gaps of her small fingers. Her heart pounded so hard she was sure they could hear it and she was far too scared about it.

She knew she couldn’t stay hidden for long. If they found her... Manager Gou will kill her!

No. She refused to go back in that warehouse. She has to find a way out.

Right as LiAi hid behind a bush, she could hear the sound of footsteps and the flashlight. When she looked behind, her body flinched entirely as she saw the men who had reached to her so quickly, shining their flashlight toward her side to search for her shadows.

LiAi squeezed her eyes shut tears shedded as she does so. While biting down on the inside of her cheek to stop herself from whimpering, she peeked from the gaps of the bush, seeing that the man hadn’t found her, perhaps because the forest was far too dark in the pitch of the night.

The light swayed closer, shining over the wet leaves beside her. She couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t make a sound! Not now. Not this time!

"She has to be here somewhere," one of the men muttered, kicking at the rock beside his feet, clicking his tongue. "But the tracks lead this way."

Another of the man who was stressed sighed, "Tch. Clever brat. She’s small enough to slip into damn near anything. How can we find her in a place like this?"

LiAi swallowed hard. Her mind was racing. If they caught her now, there was no way they’d let her live! This was bad. She knew she had to do something but before she could do it, these men were far too quick. Being adult, their legs were longer and easier for them to catch up to her.

She had to keep moving, but where? A rustling sound came from deeper in the forest and at once the men’s heads snapped up.

"What was that? fuck is that her?!"

"Shh! No! That was a growl!"

The flashlights moved right at the place where LiAi was hiding at, shining through the darkness. When a shadow moved. The men tensed. Tensed because they could tell it was a large creature not a child anymore. Now they could hear again what Manager Gou had told them, the story about the bears all over the forest.

Their minds were alerted at once and their weapons drawn, but before they could react the loud snap rang from the empty forest, they could hear the frighteningly low, guttural growl that echoed from the depths of the trees.

One of the men cursed. "Shit! Is that—?"

Less then a second later, an ear deafening and hungry growl shook the air.

"B- Bear!" someone stammered. "THAT’S THE BEAR!"

Panic erupted. The men stumbled backward, flashlights shining every where like a disco. Leaves crunched as something massive moved just beyond their sight.

LiAi didn’t wait to see what happened next. The moment their attention shifted, she darted. Her tiny feet barely made a sound as she tore through the undergrowth, dodging roots and ducking under branches.

"THERE! SHE’S RUNNING!"

She darted forward, her small body weaving through the trees as fast as her trembling legs could carry her. Her breath came in short, sharp gasps, her tiny hands clawing at branches to push herself forward.

Behind her, the bear’s rampage drowned out all other sound, the crunch of underbrush, the terrified yells of the kidnappers, the sickening thuds of bodies colliding with the ground.

They all had wanted to chase after LiAi but the black bear that was far too hungry had taken all their attention, allowing for her to escape for a while.
