Chapter 264: A Gut Feeling

LiAi was alone as she hugged her knees. Her tiny arms were tied and so was her ankles. She was frightened, still trembling and crying with tears over her face. The little girl had been crying for hours that her voice had became so parched and her head had turned dizzy from the exhaustion of crying for hours.

She could still recall how Tsuki, the kind older brother who had accompanied her had fallen from the car, wounded while she was held inside the car by Manager Gou who was holding her down the chair, tying her in place and the other kidnappers who had threaten her life for crying too much.

She had picked her head upward to look at the adults, noting the six adults all around the place excluding Manager Gou. They were dressed in black shirt and the military pants. She couldn’t tell how they look and who they were considering their faces were all covered in ski masks, allowing only their angry, frustrated, and savage eyes to be seen by little LiAi who flinched every time one of the adult men looked back at her.

"How could you make a mistake?" Manager Gou yelled, his face as pale as a white sheet of paper. He ruffled his hair in circles, anxiety all over his expression as he demanded, "You told me that the plan would work! That we can kidnap her without anyone knowing what had happened! But why did you have to provoke that weird worker from the school?! Now everyone knows that I am involved in this mess!"

One of the masked men let out a scoff. They were all up in guard as they knew that people had been sent after them yet this pathetic manager Gou who couldn’t do anything or even protect himself was wailing and dared to even demand for them to do something about his face being discovered.

He pointed his hands to his shoulders and clicked his tongue, "Don’t you understand? This wasn’t started by us nor was it our mistake. You said that you had made sure that no one who knows that girl was there but that ’weird worker’ snuck to our car and took one of our man with ease, like he knows what’s happening. Who the hell was he?"

Manager Gou clenched his fists, his face twisted in frustration as he didn’t know who Tsuki was either. It didn’t help that now LiAi had became mute, not wanting to answer his questions even when threatened. He couldn’t find out who Tsuki was and could only guess it was someone who worked in school. "Who cares?! The damage is done! We were supposed to take her quietly, not turn this into a goddamn disaster!"

LiAi flinched at the loud voices, her small body curling tighter as she tried to make herself invisible, maybe to turn one with the corner of this walls. She didn’t know that Manager Gou was someone so aggressive and violent. All this time he acted sweet to her, so much so that the girl couldn’t tell that it was all an act. She could still see it whenever she closed her eyes, how Tsuki had fell from the speeding car, his arms bleeding out as he yelled her name, wanting to save her and rip her away from the kidnappers’ arm.

He had yelled a promise, "I’ll be there soon! Don’t be scared! We will make sure to bring you back home!"

Tears began to well up in her eyes which she shut out by bitting down on her trembling lip as she didn’t want to be yelled by the men again. They had already warned her what would happen if she cried too much, scaring her enough.

One of the men slammed a boot against a nearby crate, causing it to bent. "We don’t have time for this," he hissed, angry. "What’s done is done. We need to move before they track us down."

"But isn’t moving again and again would only put us into more peril? I just saw an alert sent and our car’s number posted everywhere. It’s going to be more dangerous to go all around with that car. Besides, the child’s father is just an actor, what can he do other than pay the amount we demand?"

Manager Gou wiped the sweat from his forehead, his mind racing. "He’s r- right. We can’t just move. Not now, at least until the next morning. If we run now, we’ll be caught before we even cross the city borders." His desperate eyes then darted toward LiAi as a sickening thought crossed his mind. "She has seen and heard for far too much."

The little girl shuddered as she noticed the shift in his gaze, knowing that Manager Gou hadn’t mean well with his eyes that seemed to have turned red like a devil.

One of the men picked up on it instantly and threw a stone toward him, clicking his tongue. "Don’t even think about it," he muttered, his voice turning colder. "The boss said she’s to be kept alive. We are only here to extort money taking care of a dead body is more annoying. You can just take the money and run away by ship abroad with us."

Manager Gou clicked his tongue, too nervous that his frustration teetering on the edge, about to drive him into doing things that he wouldn’t have considered before. "Then you better pray that none of your men will make a mistake. Because if we don’t, all of us are going down."

LiAi squeezed her eyes shut, her tiny hands clenched into fists behind her back. Somewhere, deep inside her heart, she still held onto hope. Hope that Tsuki will come. After all he promised and there is her uncle Xiao MuChen who was always there to protect her. Her mother is also strong and her father.. he’s someone so brave and powerful.

LiAi had never seen her parents, ever, she had seen their pictures but wasn’t taught much about them to know what kind of person her parents were. But she had spent her mind thinking and imagining what kind of people her parents were. She had always thought her mother was someone kind and loving. Someone gentle but would never stand still in face of danger, someone who would protect her and fight against all the bad villian.

Her father?

Her father appears strict. He’s handsome and seemed cold but she knew that deep down he’s someone so gentle and loving, only showing that warmth to those dear to him and someone who would do anything to promise their safety.

That’s who her father is. That’s also who her mother is.

When she saw AiLin and talked to her, she was delighted. AiLin was exactly as brave and kind as little LiAi had thought and Li ZiChen though scary was someone so loving who would speak with smile to her, always holding her in a way where she knew that she would never be put in harm.

So her parents will be here to safe her.

They will!

So LiAi shouldn’t be scared, thought the girl in her head.

Though too fearful and shaking like a newborn fawn, she told herself that she was capable of facing what’s happening and should remain calm as her mother would be in her position.

Her mother had always been brave so she should follow her mother’s example. First she need to find a way where she could search for safety. She had been crying all the way here inside the car but she had always been praised for having such a strong memory.

She recalled what she saw from inside the black van and noted that they were moving somewhere around the forest. Her uncle who had visited so many forests for shooting told her that the forest is usually a place she should avoid but when playing hide and seek, forest is a good place to hide at.

But after some thought LiAi shook her head. It would be dangerous for her to simply walk alone to the forest. She wondered what she should do while staring at her polished red shoes.

Manager Gou who had sighed pulled the cigarette box from his pants pocket and with it something had fallen down which were keys. The keys were familiar as she knew it to be their usual car keys, the car which her uncle and her always ride on.

Manager Gou who saw the key only clicked his tongue, as if seeing it brought a far more terrible memory in his head.

He kicked it aside and turned away, showing his real nature as he had never liked children and was only forced to pretend liking LiAi. Deep down, even seeing LiAi infuriate the man and now he couldn’t care less whether the girl was shaking or crying anymore.

It didn’t help that the rest of the adults were too busy with their own thing, smoking and talking about their next plan even when they had heard LiAi’s stomach growling.

One of the man asked, "Shouldn’t we feed her?"

"Nah, no need. She won’t die from not eating for a few hours, leave her be, better yet put her in a box or something. Seeing her annoys me."
