Chapter 222: Not So Good Grandma

AiLin eyed the people gathered around her. No matter how long it had been, she still could not get used to the gaze of people who were gauging her worth. Their eyes said what they had in mind: their wish to become closer to her for the benefits she could bring, not to see her as a human.

When she was still with the Jiang Family, many people had come to her with the same motives. She didn’t think it was bad, after all, people need something from her and she could return the same thoughts to them. But it did affect her badly when she realized that the people who once were desperate to be on her side immediately ran away when seeing that befriending her became a disadvantage.

Li ZiChen eyed her who was smiling while talking to people but when they didn’t notice, she softly sighed, her eyes turning bleak. He softly placed his hands around her waist, pulling her closer, "I think it’s time for us to go now. Enjoy the party everyone."

With just one statement from him, the guests panicked, looking at each other before defeatedly walking away, knowing that Li ZiChen had shooed them off politely. They could only smile and nod, leaving them together, which gave Ailin a moment to breathe out in relief.

"It’s been a while since I’ve been surrounded by so many people."

"I know, it must have felt tiring. Looking at their faces, gouging their true intention, and feeling disappointed when you realize that their eyes were just green from envy or greed," his words resonated so soundly with her heart that she couldn’t help the small bitter smile on the corners of her lips.

"How long has it been since you participated in this kind of party?" she asked him, her eyes soft as she looked at his thoughtful expression.

He hummed before he answered, "If I’m not mistaken, since I was a baby? My parents were always there for me, they are also supportive and knew that a child’s environment builds them as an adult, so they were particularly choosy about the people I would be introduced to."

"That’s good," AiLin thought about Li ZiChen’s own characteristic. With wealth on his shoulders and authority that could have made many people lose themselves by going drunk with power, he remained a good person through and through, gentle, tender, and extremely loving. If it was someone else in his position, they would have... become like Mr and Mrs Jiang.

"If we have a child, I would want them to grow up like you," she muttered, her words leaving her lips while she stared afar at the chandelier in the party hall, her eyes unfocused and that left Li ZiChen speechless as he knew she had said all of those without thinking, just wanting to say what she had in mind.

AiLin, who heard no response from Li ZiChen, turned her head over her shoulders, looking at him to find his expression that was swept away by her words.

She still didn’t understand the reason for his baffled expression and tilted her head to him, "What’s wrong? Did you see something bad? Where?"

"You..."

"Yes?" AiLin asked.

"You said-"

AiLin wondered why Li ZiChen looked as if he had been stabbed at the heart by an arrow. His expression seemed stunned while his cheeks were flushed in a pale pink hue. She saw how his lashes seemed to glitter, perhaps from the beaming light that had brightened his light brown eyes.

"What did I say?" She then thought about her own words and when she reached to his conclusion, her eyes turned round and wide like a shocked hamster. Her lips parted in a round shape, her cheeks burning almost immediately, turning red. "No. No, that wasn’t-"

"You don’t want to have.."

"I do! Augh!" AiLin slapped her own forehead. Denying was wrong but agreeing was embarrassing! But rather than seeing Li ZiChen’s saddened eyebrows as his eyes seemed immediately disappointed when she refused her own words, she could only swallow the ember of embarrassment down her throat and rubbed her head slightly. "I do... I just.. I think I’m going to excuse myself to the washroom. I’ll see you again, okay? Just stay here. I’ll be back!"

She knew it was wrong to run away but seeing Li ZiChen’s eyes so moved when she wished to raise their child together made her nerves jump around in an erratic euphoria that she felt the need to run away from the scene. While beating her own chest, Li ZiChen’s expression that was flushed remained in her heart, leaving her with a deep ache.

Meanwhile Li ZiChen, who was left alone as if a storm had just passed him, was all smiles. He looked like a child who had just seen a magic trick, so moved and overwhelmed, his cheeks spreading wide which gave his handsome face a brighter glow. Even the guests who had been watching him as if he was a piece of art in a museum felt their heart racing, including the men who had accidentally seen him smiling.

Li ZiChen thought about AiLin who initially had no plan on continuing her future. She had always been that way, focused on her revenge but never once gave a thought about herself. It had worried him as he had heard from the psychiatrist that people who live for revenge like Ailin would tend to choose a deadly end for themselves, whether it was by putting their own body in harm’s way for revenge or dying when the revenge ends.

This wasn’t something that Li ZiChen could accept, therefore he had tried many ways to fuel the fire of living back into her heart.

He had started small, starting by showing her the good things in life like food and places, then he tried to bring back her desire to her passion, like her acting desire or the warmth of a family.

It was difficult, but slowly he could see the changes inside of AiLin’s heart. She became warmer, her sleepwalks had stopped, and that put his heart at rest, but at times, he still had that fear creeping into his heart that questioned if she was truly better or it was only suppressed.

To hear that she had began to look for the future, this was akin to finally receiving the first ray of sunlight after a long, endless winter.

Li ZiChen pressed a hand against his chest, feeling the erratic beat of his heart as if it was trying to assure him that this moment was real. She had spoken of a future... their future.

It wasn’t just about revenge anymore. Somewhere, somehow, AiLin had begun to look past the darkness that had consumed her for so long.

And that alone made his entire world shift.

His fingers brushed against the cool rim of his glass, but he had lost all taste for the drink. All he could think about was the way her voice had sounded, soft and unguarded, as she imagined their child, one that would grow up with warmth, love, and none of the pain they had both endured.

A slow, almost dazed chuckle left his lips, earning curious glances from the nearby guests. He didn’t care. His mind was still chasing after AiLin’s fleeting presence, tracing every expression that had crossed her face before she ran away, too embarrassed to face her own words.

"She wants a future," he murmured under his breath, his smile widening, his heart swelling.

And if she wanted one, then he would make sure she had it.

No matter what.

AiLin who had fled her way to the washroom tried to fix her own heart, telling it to stay quiet to remain still and not to overreact as she would start acting weirdly and freak Li ZiChen with the way she was acting, but when she looked at the large mirror placed outside the washroom and finding her own reflection smiling widely which made her look silly.

She came closer to her reflection, fixing her own face by poking her cheeks. Has she always been this happy...? Whenever she looks at Li ZiChen, was her expression always so silly?

How could he ever like this stupid face?

Thankfully it seems Li ZiChen’s eyes were quite bad to think she looks good.

"Mama!"

This familiar voice...

AiLin slowly turned head, finding LiAi who had waved her small hands, dressed in an adorable baby pink dress and a flower to decorate her black hair. Her giggles sounded adorable as she rushed toward AiLin and hug her knees like always, but today tighter than ever.

"Li Ai!" She squealed, "Oh dear, are you lost again?"

"Hehe.." LiAi shyly laughed her question away while nodding her head, "I was holding uncle’s hands and then all of a sudden I was holding to a different uncle. Then I saw you!"

"Oh, your uncle is here," she muttered. Well it’s true that most actors are invited here which would make sense why she would find Xiao MuChen but did he bring LiAi here because he was worried about leaving her with another one of his friends who were going to betray his trust?

AiLin bent down and cupped LiAi’s chubby cheeks, brushing back a few strands of her silky black hair. "Sweetheart, you have to be more careful. What if you end up with a scary uncle next time?"

LiAi giggled, unfazed. "I wasn’t scared! I knew you’d find me, Mama."

AiLin’s heart clenched at how naturally the word ’Mama’ left the child’s lips. Even after all this time, it still caught her off guard. LiAi had started calling her that before she could even protest, and somehow, AiLin could never bring herself to correct her.

She sighed, pressing a soft kiss to LiAi’s forehead. "Let’s find your uncle before he loses his mind looking for you."

Just as she straightened up, she felt a presence behind her. Turning, her gaze landed on none other than... Elder Hua...
