Chapter 212: Flicker of Fire
AiLin watched as the messy relationship ended. Sighing, she then swung LiAi gently as she watched over the little girl adorably smiling even while she’s asleep. For some reason, watching over LiAi brought her so much happiness and joy even though deep down she knows she shouldn’t feel this way. As she looked at LiAi once last time, she heard Xiao MuChen who spoke from the side, "You seem to be very happy around children."
AiLin chuckled, "I like them. Innocent, adorable, and so lovable," she muttered as she mentioned, "How could anyone ever dislike them?"
Xiao MuChen who heard this fell into a quiet thought. He watched as AiLin’s smile which was sincere as she stared at LiAi around her arms and finally spoke up, "Don’t you think LiAi is innocent, adorable, and so lovable?"
"Of course," she answered quickly, wondering what he meant.
"But you-" he sighed and turned away, "Thank you for today."
She saw how Xiao MuChen seemed struggling to express his feelings by the way he had spoken. She shrugged her shoulders in a chill manner, "No worries, I didn’t do it for you," she said straightforwardly and turned at the stickers that LiAi had given her, "I did it for her. Anyone in my position would. I also don’t want to get too personal or nosy about you but don’t you think you should abandon your lifestyle?"
Xiao MuChen furrowed his eyebrows and she noticed how his jaw tensed. It was shame as well as struggle to say what he want from the depth of his heart. His fingers then twitched slightly, as if resisting the urge to clench into fists.
AiLin tilted her head, watching him carefully. "What?" she asked, feigning innocence, but her sharp gaze held a knowing glint.
Xiao MuChen exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. His fingers brushed over the red kiss mark still faintly visible on his skin, and AiLin’s eyes flickered toward it before she clicked her tongue disapprovingly.
"You don’t know anything about my lifestyle," he muttered, finally crossing his arms tightly over his chest, as if trying to shield himself from the conversation.
AiLin gently shifted LiAi’s weight in her arms. "True, I don’t know anything or want to know anything. But we can see from the obvious just by looking at you. You rush here in a panic, looking like a mess, and the first thing I see is that
." She nodded toward his disheveled shirt and the unmistakable evidence of his previous activities. "Should I even ask what was so important that you left your niece waiting here for two hours?"Xiao MuChen’s lips pressed into a thin line. His hands balled into fists and he didn’t respond.
AiLin sighed, shaking her head, her fingers smoothing over LiAi’s hair. The little girl let out a soft murmur in her sleep, snuggling closer into AiLin’s embrace. The warmth of her tiny body, the complete trust she showed, made AiLin’s heart clench. She felt the need to tell Xiao MuChen the truth, that his behavior could be dangerous, especially after what had happened this afternoon.
"You know," AiLin glanced down at LiAi, "she deserves better than this."
That made him flinch.
His arms tightened over his chest, his shoulders going rigid.
AiLin met his gaze, unwavering. "You might not care what people say about you. But LiAi? She’s growing up. She’ll hear those rumors. She’ll see how you live your life. And one day, she might start believing that she doesn’t matter to you."
She saw how his face seemed shrouded by gloom.
"I know it’s not my place to say anything," AiLin continued, her voice gentler now. "But I can tell you care for her, a lot, and she admires you, a lot. Just don’t make decision that would hurt you or her, though I understand the need to live your life, you should also be aware that your life isn’t yours alone now."
Xiao MuChen didn’t say anything, it was as if his words were stuck on his throat and he couldn’t say a single thing. Instead, he let out a quiet sigh, "...I’ll take her," he muttered, stepping forward.
AiLin glanced down at LiAi, reluctant to let go. But she carefully shifted the little girl into his arms, watching as his grip instinctively tightened, securing her close.
"She adores you, you know," AiLin murmured as she smoothed out the wrinkles on her sleeves. "You should try acting like you deserve it."
Xiao MuChen didn’t respond. But as AiLin turned to leave, she caught sight of the way his fingers lightly stroked LiAi’s back, gentle and protective.
And for some reason, that sight made her chest ache.
Placing one hand on her cheeks, AiLin sighed. She hope that Xiao MuChen didn’t take her word badly, especially when she had said those words only to make sure he knows what to do before there comes a day when he regret it- god forbid.
During dinner, AiLin told Li ZiChen about her interaction with Xiao MuChen. He listened to her well, his eyes brushing over her features to study her emotions and throughout the conversation, he didn’t say much but listen to her.
"Did you think I was out of the line?" she asked him then and saw as Li ZiChen thought about it before shaking his head.
"It might have came off as unwanted from his side but he would also know that what you said was true and that it’s something he needed to hear," unlike AiLin, he was far more straightforward and he thought that if Xiao MuChen didn’t get any wake up call, he should accept it nicely that AiLin had done it for his own sake.
"But I’m worried, people don’t take it well when someone else poke their nose to their business."
Li ZiChen smiled and she saw as he took the plates from the table, kissing her forehead gently as he pushed to stand up from the chair, "You speak because you care, not because you wanted to be involved with the drama, AiLin. He knows it too, I’m sure about it. By the way, what happened to the child’s parents?"
As she hadn’t told the detail, she expected the question and spoke with a soft sigh, "They died."
"At such a young age, that’s unfortunate," Li ZiChen’s voice was sincere and although his expression didn’t change, she could feel that he was sympathizing with the child which made her admire his broad back as he cleaned the plates tentatively.
Was there any rich CEO who still washes the dishes back at home?
Maybe he’s the only one, and she chuckled at the thought.
"Maybe," Li ZiChen then started his words, "Not that I’m trying to justify what Xiao MuChen had done but don’t you think that perhaps his actions were caused by him wanting to have a relationship or maybe anyone who could lessen his burden of taking care the young LiAi?"
AiLin hummed, "That maybe so, I didn’t ask about his parents and whether they could help LiAi," she then drawled. If his parents have also passed away, he would be alone in taking care of LiAi and maybe that caused him to feel lonely.
She sighed, "Don’t you think I’m too involved?"
"AiLin," he chuckled, and she love to hear his laughter, "Don’t think of it that way. I don’t mind you caring about the young girl. Seeing her circumstances, I know you’re someone who wouldn’t be happy seeing such young child to feel lonely or suffer. Do what you feel right, I’ll support you."
"Mhm," she smiled as he came toward her, kissing her forehead again. Then AiLin fell into silence, rethinking about LiAi, "I don’t know why," she let her words hung, "I feel very connected to LiAi. Maybe it’s just my mind."
Li ZiChen watched her face, knowing that AiLin wasn’t someone who tend to care about other’s business but when it involves a child, he didn’t question it. He also thought about the age of the girl which would be a perfect match to her baby if she hadn’t died.
That thought quickly put Li ZiChen’s lips into a thin line.
No way, he thought in his head.
The next day, AiLin had came to the set with pins over her head from the hairstylist. Today’s scene requires her to cry a few times which wasn’t too difficult for her. The only problem was that FangMin and InRan would both be in few of the scenes she would take.
"Oh AiLin!" FangMin walked beside her, smiling softly upon seeing her face, their interaction seems very friendly from outside by how FangMin had eagerly moved forward to hug her, bringing her closer to her embrace and then squealing out of excitement.
AiLin returned the wide smile though deep down she wondered how they had became so close in matter of seconds.
"I heard that you did so well yesterday. Everyone who watched your scene immediately shuddered."
AiLin smiled, "I also saw the new advertisement you had. It really made me want to buy the product."
"Awww you think so?" FangMin sat beside her, "By the way AiLin, sorry if I’m too direct about this but this morning I saw you stepping out of a car I feel like I have seen that car before... but it didn’t belong to you."
AiLin’s eyebrows raised as the car she had stepped out from today was none other than Li ZiChen’s car.
"Don’t worry, I know how secret goes in our world, but do me a favor because I’m curious. Whose care does it belong to? With that series number and the model, I bet it’s someone wealthy isn’t it?"
Oh.
Now AiLin understood why FangMin was so eager to get close to her.
This girl.
She was trying to get close to her after seeing how she had came out from a wealthy man’s car isn’t she?
