Chapter 197: Heart To Heart

Touched by his words, AiLin felt her entire body floating in such a comfortable warmth. After that as Li ZiChen had insisted, they decided to visit the hospital briefly where the doctor had checked and gave AiLin a cold medicine as it seemed her fever was caused by it.

She watched as Li ZiChen looked at her from afar while the nurse helped her inject the IV and when their eyes met, his almond eyes softened, his lips spread with warmth.

"Your husband is very thoughtful isn’t he?" The nurse chuckled as she saw AiLin whose eyes were glued on Li ZiChen without her own notice. "I can’t help but smile seeing you two looking at each other so lovingly like that."

AiLin chuckled faintly, unable to help herself from smiling, "Does it look that way?"

"Of course, don’t you see his eyes? I’m telling you this because I was stationed closest to the doctor and I haven’t seen a single second where his eyes weren’t on you, it’s as if he’s looking at his precious gem, oh how cute you two are!"

AiLin could no longer lie to herself. She couldn’t suppress the truth of her emotions any longer. Li ZiChen— he was the first, and would forever remain the only man capable of stirring her heart.

Love was far too simple to call this overwhelming emotions she feels for him.

He’s her heaven in this hellish world, the man who is her comfort, and the one who had became her life.

By the time they came home, AiLin couldn’t help but watched Li ZiChen the entire time. She saw how when she walked inside the apartment, he would bent his knees and took off her shoes, gently holding her ankles and shifting her feet into the fresh slippers, doing so gently with each of his movements as if he was holding to a fractured glass.

He had also removed her coat, giving her a fresh towel from the cupboard. It wasn’t an exaggeration when she says that she didn’t even have to lift her finger once as Li ZiChen would take care everything for her sake, he would even help her walk by carrying her on his arms if she hadn’t told him not to once she got out off the car earlier.

A love so full of devotion, this was Li ZiChen’s love.

"I drew you a bath," Li ZiChen said with a soft smile. His gaze was warm, though a flicker of unease lingered in his eyes. He seemed hesitant, as if afraid to stir her already fragile mood. Avoiding any mention of what had happened, he focused instead on lifting her spirits, offering her a quiet moment of solace. "You can get in immediately, there’s also the new clothes, it’s going to make your body much colder if you stay out here."

"What about you?" she asked, noting that he is also wet from the rain.

"I’ll take a bath too, after you," he said. Though he had plenty of other bathrooms in his apartment, it would be better not to take bath while AiLin was still in the bathroom alone. He wanted to avoid the worse things possible and though he knew he could be thinking far too much, he simply didn’t want to let things unfavorable to happen without his presence.

"Okay," she hummed, pushing herself to stand and then walking to the bathroom that was filled with the thick white haze. The warm air was enough to let her tense muscles to relax, her shoulders that were hardened with burden and nerves seemed to have also calmed down in a moment, allowing her to breathe in and her heart to be washed with such a warm sensation.

She slowly reached out her milky legs toward the warm bath, her entire body then submerged into the comfortable water that was enough to wrap her like a warm blanket in a winter day, the sensation of warmth was enough to scratch the itch that her body needed.

While dipping her body into the bathtub, AiLin’s head wondered over the realization of that middle school delinquent. It seemed Li ZiChen’s words were correct as back in middle school he was far different than who he was now.

Perhaps because he was still young back then, but the Li ZiChen in middle school always wear a frown between his forehead. The only time she had seen him truly smile was when they had gone to that beach together. That was also the first time she ever felt she had reached to a deeper understanding toward someone else and feel comforted by another person’s presence.

How long has it been since Li ZiChen thought about her?

If they had known each other since middle school, maybe the one sided love Li ZiChen had for her was from such a young age?

She suddenly pushed herself from the bathtub in that realization.

How long has it been then? Ten.. no, twelve years ago? Or even more than that?

Twelve years... How could someone pine for a single person for so long? It seemed impossible to her. Love, in her eyes, was fragile, a delicate thing that left her feeling anxious at the mere thought of it.

The small gasp coming from her lips was stifled by her hand and she could hear his voice that echoed from outside the bathroom along with his shadow that moved to the frosted glass, "AiLin? What happened inside? Are you alright? I heard you yelled?"

"No, I didn’t-" AiLin briefly stopped before dipping her body deeper to the bath, the milky bathwater that was mixed with salt and soap bubbles was enough to cover her entire body and after some thought, she called him, "C- Can you come in? I... I feel a bit scared alone."

"..."

AiLin blinked her eyes and cheeks that felt hot. She quickly shook her head at her daring self and retracted her words quickly, "Actually, forget about it, I’m sorry-"

"I can come in?" Li ZiChen inquired her, his voice soft, that hesitation earlier didn’t seem as if he was turned off by her request, instead it was the opposite. It was like a child who was far too happy from the promise of receiving a present that their heart trembled in hesitation, wondering if this joy was really for him to enjoy.

AiLin didn’t know what she was feeling, but she knew she wanted to see him. After realizing the years that passed since their middle school, his kindness and love, everything about him became a million times more endearing. She couldn’t held it back herself, needing to see him urgently even though she was still inside the bathtub.

"Y- yes," she answered, her voice cracked which embarrassed her. She then saw the door slowly opened as she hadn’t locked it.

Now that she realized it, she had always locked her door when she goes into a bathroom or when she sleeps but after living with Li ZiChen, she never felt the need to do so anymore, something she had just realized.

Li ZiChen had came in. He was still wearing his working clothes, the pale brown vest that wrapped his waist tightly, holding the white shirt underneath which was crumpled unlike his usual appearance that was always so neat and tidy.

He rolled his sleeve up to his elbow, revealing strong, muscular arms that seemed even more imposing as the fabric bunched above. Her eyes caught the intricate tattoo of a snake coiled along his forearm, its tail stopping just shy of his elbow. Until now, she had never noticed how far the design stretched, assuming it ended at his wrist.

Li ZiChen’s eyes didn’t land on her, she could tell he was trying not to look at her, not because he didn’t want to see her eyes but because he wanted her to be comfortable and not to worry about her body showing. His eyes were trained on the floor, such serious man with such a handsome feature, trying to act the most polite was only more adorable to her eyes, making her to chuckle faintly.

"What’s wrong?" His gentle voice entered her ears, "I guess the bathroom does feel a bit lonely, I should renovate them and give it a bit more colors," he continued on, "Maybe something that feel homey and add a few plants..."

"Can you help me wash my hair?" Ailin said, knowing well that Li ZiChen had planned to simply stand there while accompanying her. Sure enough after she had requested him to wash her hair, his eyes widened as if he had just been shot. She doubted anyone other than her had ever made him so surprised to the point that he looked almost knocked out on the spot.

"Sure?" He stuttered faintly. He looked away for a moment, wondering what had caused this to happen but he was quick on his feet and moved to the end of the bathtub where her head rested. Seeing her milky skin and her long black hair urges him to look forward but he continued to train his eyes on her hair, being a responsible man who is true to his words. Though he wasn’t aware of the temptation that was trying to get his eyes over her.
