Chapter 196: That Young Man

When the pain that hits her head became worse, AiLin’s body weakly swayed. Just then she felt a firm tug pulling her elbow from behind, protecting her and stopping her from falling head first into the cold floor.

Her neck craned, her eyes lifting to look upward at the man who had held her by her elbow and she could see his chest that was heaving quickly, raising and falling down in a quick beat. Li ZiChen was frowning, his face seemed to be slightly pallid as he looked at her.

"What’s wrong?" He asked her at once, kneeling his knees and dirtying his expensive suit to the muddy puddle near the bench. He gently wrapped his hands around her cheeks, pulling her face upward and staring at it carefully, his eyes, his touches, and his tone was as if he was taking care of a fragile bubble of soap which he fear would burst the moment it touched his fingertips. "Where does it hurt? Let’s go to the hospital first alright? Don’t worry, I will be there with you, I know you hate the hospital," he spoke quickly, in haste, as if he was going to give her anything if it means bringing her to the hospital.

The grandma who looked at him was startled, muttering, "That’s him.."

She then turned to see the grandma, her eyes then moving to Li ZiChen to take a double look on his face, "How.. did you find me?"

He pursed his lips and answered after a while, "There were a few people who had been ordered to follow you secretly for security reasons, but even then, you walked too fast," he tried to chuckle, "I know how much of a fast runner you are, but I didn’t expect that you would be so fast."

AiLin stared at his face, those expression that were clumsy, trying to protect her smile, wanting her to never feel a single ounce of sadness in her. Watching everything, this reminded her of something.

She recalled when she was still in middle school of how she had left to the beach with that delinquent. How during the bus ride home, she had fallen asleep, her head falling on his shoulders. Her eyes were closed and she could smell his youthful fragrance and when she looked into his face, he was flustered, trying to make her comfortable as if it was his first time ever offering his shoulders to anyone else.

His almond eyes that were light brown, his sharp nose that curved slightly at the tip, his pale pink lips that were drawn so prettily, and although back then he had cut his hair so short to a buzz cut, now that hair had grown much longer, wet from sweat sticking to his forehead.

"So it was you," she whispered, her hands moving forward had reached his skin. She was surprised and speechless.

Now that she had seen his face and remembered the memories, everything seemed to fit so well in a frightening speed. She even began to ask herself, how could she had ever forgotten his face?

Li ZiChen’s breaths shuddered, he looked frightened as he stared to her eyes, "What have you remembered?"

"In middle school, we knew each other didn’t we?" She asked, unsure. Was her mind playing tricks on her now?

"Oh," he sang and he smiled, "Yes, we did. I wasn’t the best person to be around you back then. So childish and brash, I must have hurt you multiple times especially when I had... reported about your family’s abuse to school without thinking twice. It had caused you to be moved from school."

"That happened?" She frowned, holding her head that was still aching and Li ZiChen hands immediately wrapped around her head, gently stroking it.

"Let’s not try to think about it first. Maybe going to the hospital is a good choice now," he said and before she could say another word, Li ZiChen had wrapped one hand around her waist and the other under her knees, lifting her with such less effort and then bringing her over closer to his chest. He then looked at the grandma who he had seen took care of AiLin earlier on, "I will come back to show my gratitude to you, thank you so much for staying beside AiLin in time she needs the company."

"Oh, no, no, no, you don’t have to thank me, that miss, she is very strong but you also know that strong people break down without noticing it themselves. It’s good that you are here for her, I’m sure she appreciates it as well."

Li ZiChen smiled at the kind grandma, nodding his head firmly before going to the car. He had gently wrapped AiLin with his suit and as she entered his car, she noticed that the front of the car’s door seemed to be slightly dented.

She couldn’t help but pointed it out, "What happened there?"

"Oh," said Li ZiChen, pursing his lips into a smile, "I got hit by a bicycle it was both of our fault and I have made sure that person was sent to the hospital to get checked. That was why I was a bit late. What about you? Where did you walk to?"

AiLin could tell that Li ZiChen was trying his upmost best not to demand her answers as to why she had ran away. This side of him that was trying its best for her sake meant more than words she could use to express herself.

She could only looked away slightly from the blinding beauty that Li ZiChen had shown her.

"Mei Hua," she started and he seemed to clench his fingers that were holding to the steering wheel even tighter. "She told you everything, didn’t she? But have you known about it before?"

He looked straight to the street and answered firmly, "I do," he clenched his jaw, repeating his words, "Of course I do. I had to know what your family had done to you and even though this was personal, I couldn’t stop myself from learning about it."

She gulped, understanding his side of the story, "Then why weren’t you disappointed?"

He turned her eyes, a flicker of emotions past by, "How would I be disappointed? That you once have a baby with someone else that wasn’t me even though that events weren’t something you wished for? Or the fact that your parents had forced you to abort your baby even though you were unwilling? Both of it, they weren’t your fault and it would never be."

She saw his eyes, the firm eyes of his gaze seemed almost ashamed that she would think he would ever feel disappointed.

"But," she clenched her jaw and fists, "Because of the abortion that was done in later stage of pregnancy, I have a high risk of not being able to have a baby anymore."

"We can adopt a child," Li ZiChen answered without missing a beat, "My parents aren’t the type of people who cares about heirs or children or grandchildren. I would love to have a child with you, it’s my dream but if that couldn’t happen, we could adopt a child together, no matter whose blood that child may carry, they are going to grow up with our love, as our children. That’s more important than having to lose you."

She could feel something bubbles in her throat, her voice shook as she answered him, "But people will talk badly about you, that you’re making a wrong choice."

"If I live my life listening to them, I wouldn’t have been here now," he smiled and continued to drive the car, "I know what you’re worried, that you’re not worthwhile to be loved or perhaps to be cared for because you don’t have anything to offer but AiLin, love doesn’t work that way. You shouldn’t be loved because you can offer something. You should be loved by someone because they find you lovable as you are, because you are you."

She blinked away the tears that caught on her lashes, her face moving downward to stare at her skirt that was wet, making her to realize she had turned his seat wet from her clothes but he never seemed to mind it.

He never seemed to mind the fact that she was a mess, a big mess that perhaps could harm him, yet it was as if he was immune to all her weaknesses- it was as if he could only see the good in her.

"You can find someone better," she choked on her words and saw his hand that settled on top of her palms. The warmth he shared from it seemed to overwhelm her with emotions, his fingers tightening gently.

"My heart is with you, if it isn’t you, I could never learn love," Li ZiChen then smiled as sadness also filled his heart. "It can’t be anyone else, it would never be anyone else. you’re the only one my heart could accept."

he deepened his breaths, his words firm as the night sky around them seemed to have glittered as his words sweetly entered her ears,

"I love you. AiLin, I only love you, the only woman in my life will be you until my death. It can only be you."
