Chapter 160: Desperation Measure

Li ZiChen’s eyes darkened as he met with Bai HaiZe’s almond eyes. Though Bai HaiZe was smiling, Li ZiChen could feel his gaze that was studying him carefully, doing it sneakily enough not to look too rude. Thought he two had never introduced themselves to each other properly, they weren’t quite strangers to each other. Especially since the reason why they were tied together was AiLin who was sitting behind Li ZiChen.

Li ZiChen turned his eyes back to AiLin, "I guess everything went well?"

She nodded, "Mhm, it was good. Dr. Mei is indeed a great doctor."

"I’m glad you think so," said Li ZiChen as he helped her to stand up. He then looked from the corner of his eyes at Bai HaiZe, "I guess we will be parting ways now, glad to know you Mr Bai."

Bai HaiZe watched as AiLin’s eyes that were glued to Li ZiChen. Even though the two of them had quite a deep history of each other, it seems AiLin’s attention was all stolen by Li ZiChen the moment he entered to their conversation. He was still smiling though his eyes had lost its sparkle. He walked forward, reaching out his hand to AiLin as he gently pushed a rectangular name card into her hands, "AiLin, I’m glad to see you again after so long. If you don’t mind, we should meet up with each other again to catch up."

AiLin looked at the name card and her throat bobbed. She didn’t say anything but find herself recalling of her pasts, of how warm and gentle Bai HaiZe has been to her and how rejecting this name card was far too difficult as it made her feel guilty to him. She was the one who had destroyed his future, not him. She pursed her lips and stopped Li ZiChen for a while, not knowing the expression that Li ZiChen had on his face seemed to tighten upon seeing how she had focused all her attention toward Bai HaiZe.

Seeing how her expression turned miserable as if she was looking back at the one thing that she had desired so much in her past but could never have.

Now that she has nothing that would separate her from her desire, was this the chance for her to choose Bai HaiZe?

Li ZiChen’s throat turned dry, his blood raising but he couldn’t ever direct that anger and jealousy toward AiLin. The only thing that he felt was a pathetic emotion of being the loser.

He could do everything.

He could order the plane to make the sky rain all over Beijing. He could order any company to go bankrupt easily. He could even kill people who had done him dirty.

But no amount of wealth and power that he has would allow him to acquire AiLin by force.

"Sure," AiLin answered, her voice cutting deep into Li ZiChen’s heart as he saw the pair of two lovers who were separated by fate in the past. They could fix the past and he wasn’t a part of that past that Ailin wanted to fix.

A broken silence ensued to Li ZiChen’s lips, her words cutting deep enough to cut a scar in his soul.

"I’m glad to see that you have been good too, HaiZe."

"I haven’t been good without you," answered Bai HaiZe as he squeezed her hands but AiLin gently pulled her fingers away from him, offering him one last smile before leaving the hospital floor with Li ZiChen beside her.

Watching the elevator door that closed in front of him, Bai HaiZe looked at his own hands, clenching it as his smile that had faded was accompanied by the words he whispered from his mouth, "You still don’t like to touch me, do you AiLin?"

Back inside the car, AiLin was quiet as she stared outside the car’s window. She didn’t know what she was feeling. If one had seen someone they were close with in the past, isn’t nostalgia the correct emotion that people should feel?

Why was it when she saw Bai HaiZe, the only thing she felt was a sense of dread?

Was it because she feels that upon seeing Bai HaiZe’s face, the memories of her past where she would only suffer and suffer haunts her?

AiLin couldn’t describe it but by thinking about this, she only felt guilty to Bai HaiZe as he didn’t deserve her clear rejection when he was also a victim.

"You know him," he whispered. Li ZiChen’s eyes were locked in the road, he never once looked at her as he spoke.

She turned to see that his knuckles had turned white as he shifted around and clench the steering wheel in front of him.

"An old friend," she answered and he hummed. She raised her eyebrows, "Don’t you know about him too?"

"Only briefly described from your informations, I promised I wont dig about you without asking you anymore, remember? So there’s not much that I know about him," he then paused and added, "Was he only a friend of yours?"

She turned her eyes again to study his face that seemed so expressionless, making it difficult for her to guess of what he was thinking. But a sudden panic bubbled to her throat and the urge to explain surge into her lips, she explained, "I don’t see him as anything more than friends now."

"Are you sure?" Li ZiChen asked as the car sped up.

AiLin looked at the empty street surrounding them and though she should be scared by how he had sped up and went to a place with lesser people, she remained firm and answered him with a nod, "I dont think of him as anything than a friend."

"And why are you explaining this to me AiLin?" Li ZiChen asked, his brown eyes finally moved to her, as if desperate for her answer. He wasn’t teasing her, he wanted to hear her to tell him that she wasn’t going to choose Bai HaiZe. That she explained this to him in a haste because he didn’t want him to misunderstand. Because what she feels toward him was more than what she showed.

"Because I don’t want you to misunderstand," she responded firmly and then was caught by her own words. She panic, not wanting him to read her words into a different meaning and added, "I mean! I promised with you to be in a relationship for now for our contract, I won’t do anything that would cause your trust in me to be broken."

"Only that?" Li ZiChen asked her and she found herself at loss as denying it would be weird but not denying would confirm something she didn’t want to confirm.

She pursed her lips, "Let’s stop talking about this. I dont know what you’re thinking about but I have told you that I want to limit our relationship to strictly contractual."

Li ZiChen’s car suddenly stopped and Ailin found herself suddenly shifted. A strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her effortlessly across the seat and he brought her into his laps. He looked at her eyes, his words seemingly more serious and more desperate for her attention than ever.

"Strictly contractual. Does that mean once this contract end you will run back to that bastard?" Li ZiChen was gritting his teeth, his jaw was locked as he seemed to be trying with all his might not to sound rude or menacing to her. But he couldn’t control the surging jealousy of seeing someone from her past would take her back. He cursed in his head, cursing how despicable and hateful of a man he is. How he was still "a man" that had scared Ailin to death. He tightened his grip around her waist and then buried the crook of his nose toward her stomach, whispering, "Don’t go to him AiLin. Don’t meet up with him."

AiLin flet her heart race and seeing how close his ears were to be pressed to her chest and to hear the loud race of her drumming heartbeat scared her which only caused for her heart to beat louder than ever.

She saw his eyes that lifted back at her, the darkness that swirl in it, the desire, and the hunger. It wasn’t possession and obsession that darkened his eyes, nor was it lust.

It was the desire to be loved.

It was clear what Li ZiChen wanted from her wasn’t to be chosen as first, it wasn’t her body, but rather her love. He wanted her love so much that he had became a hungry predator that was desperate for every drop of love and affection she could squeeze for him.

Now finding someone who would still the source of his love, Li ZiChen panicked.

Panic. That Li ZiChen! He was panicking because he felt that she was going to choose someone else above him.

How could AiLin not feel the looming heart race from seeing his desperation? A man like him, one who can own everything was under her fingers, hugging to her waist, begging for her not to walk out on him and choose someone else.

She couldn’t help her hands that cupped his jaw and pulled his handsome face upward. He couldn’t help her lips that loosened and her words that naturally whisper back at him an assurance, "I won’t. I won’t. I promise you, I won’t meet him anymore."
