Chapter 140: A Helping Hand

AiLin raised her hand in defeat. She couldn’t have Canary speaking another word about Li ZiChen with how outrageous she was behaving. Gulping down her nervousness, she looked back at her friend who seemed convinced by Li ZiChen now which was odd with the sudden change of attitude but it wasn’t the first time for Canary to suddenly switch up, especially upon realizing the person she hate might bring her more advantage than demerits. Canary’s best talent was to discern a person’s merit towards them and wouldn’t hesitate to do just about anything to keep that merit to themselves. In this case, Canary seemed to have summarized that Li ZiChen would be their biggest ally and it would be a mistake not to pull the man deeper to their clutch.

"No. Enough," AiLin sighed as she pushed her hand to her forehead, squeezing it. "I told you before, I don’t want to be in a relationship."

Canary didn’t expect the sudden turn of a mood from AiLin’s eyes that was once embarrassed into now full of guilt. She looked at her men, telling them to go out and they hurried out off the door. Left alone, Canary placed her hand on top of AiLin’s, offering a sincere gaze, "Is it because of... him?"

There was only one "him" that Canary would mention about AiLin’s past. It wasn’t her enemies, nor anyone from AiLin’s family. It’s as the only ally she had when she was young, also the father of her late angel who was aborted forcefully without her consent.

AiLin’s heart hitched hearing that young man mentioned. She pursed her lips and showed Canary a small smile. Bai HaiZe.

"You told me you don’t love him anymore," said Canary as she reached out her hand, "So you can move on."

"Move on?" Ailin looked into Canary’s black eyes and shook her head, "It’s not that I can’t try to love Li ZiChen because of him, Canary."

"Then?"

Her lips were parted a little. There were words struggling to get out of her mouth but in the end, AiLin couldn’t say anything and pursed her lips. She looked back on the chair and smiled a small smile, "I just don’t think I’m the right choice for him. Before he regrets getting too close to me, I have to draw a boundary."

"But what if he loves you? For all you are."

"I’m not a lovable person, Canary," AiLin said as she looked back into her friend’s eyes, softeness were in her tone but her words made anyone’s heart to ache upon listening it. AiLin slowly push away Canary’s hands and grasped it tightly, "I don’t think that it’s right for anyone to love a filthy person like me."

AiLin could see shock on Canary’s eyes. She reached out her hands toward her and pulled Ailin into a hug. AiLin accepted the hug but her hands didn’t wrap around Canary’s back but rather hung in awkwardness beside her waist. She didn’t know why Canary looked so sad hearing her words as it was the truth. Li ZiChen is perfect. He lead a flawless life. AiLin knew well that she was a stain and how could a stain ever wish to be with a perfect flawless canvas like him?

She didn’t want to be the one thing that sully his perfection.

It was enough that she was destroyed beyond means, there was no need to have another person be ruined like her.

"What are you saying?! You’re not filthy— did you visit the psychiatrist after you got out of the prison?"

AiLin raised her eyebrows, "I don’t need—"

"—Did you forget what we promised? Before we started this revenge and I leave the prison, you told me you will always attend any therapy sessions that you have so it won’t affect our plan."

AiLin found herself silenced by Canary’s words. She rubbed her ears, "Did I promise that?"

"You did, don’t even try to tell me that you forgot about it and you’re gonna back out on that part. AiLin," her friend’s tone then softened to her ears. AiLin felt Canary’s hug tighter than ever as she whispered gently, "You’re never a filthy person. In my whole life, you’re the purest person I have ever known. So trust me," whispered Canary, "Loving you is a blessing for the people who have you beside them. You’re never a curse nor a filth. So please, don’t say that would you? Hearing my best friend speaking terribly about herself... my heart ache more than the time when I had to kill that bastard by my own hands."

Canary’s black eyes were filled with a glaze of tears. Her lips were smiling to encourage her but she seemed to be holding back to herself.

AiLin always thought of Canary as her other half. Her best friend, the two people who had found comfort on each other’s presence. She relented and finally hugged Canary’s back and hummed softly, "Alright, I’m sorry. I will go to the therapy again."

"Promise?"

"Mhm, promise."

After her brief meeting with Canary, AiLin then walked out of the office accompanied by the eldest twin. His large stature had almost shielded the entire car’s door and he stood there, looming over her while she watched him with questions in her gaze. She saw how the passerby stared at her in worry, whispering if they should call the police as it seemed as though she was being bothered by someone from a vicious gang.

Sighing, AiLin went to the corner of the car and called out, "You should come in, Si."

Si, the eldest twin who worked under Canary quickly offered a wide smile as he walked inside the car, causing it to shake with the heavy weight and AiLin was cornered to the other side of the door when he pushed himself inside.

She didn’t mind the small space and coughed her throat to get his attention, "Are you worried about Canary?"

"Of course I am, Boss AiLin."

"Just Miss is fine, I’m not your boss but Canary right?" She asked to see the man smiling at her meaningfully. "What is it that made you hold me back?"

"I know a little about your plan, as well as Boss’s plan," the man spoke while staring far ahead, not looking at her as his gaze deepened in thoughts. "I know well that you two have people you want to ruin, your enemies, and I would be more than glad to help you two as I know you have helped me and all of my other siblings."

"You can get to the point, Si," said AiLin as Si looked at her slowly, pulling up an apologetic smile.

"I don’t know much about your plan in details but I want to beg you that if in that plan Boss have to use her own hands to kill someone, I wish that you could tell me beforehand and give that role to me."

AiLin was wordless as she narrowed her eyes, "I thought you told me earlier that you would support her in killing someone."

"Indeed. That still doesn’t change. I will still support the Boss in killing her enemies, especially knowing what they had done to her," Si gulped as he let out a heavy disapproved sigh, "But I wish that the Boss wouldn’t have to shoulder anymore guilt. Killing your enemies as deserved is really a wonderful reward but I cannot bear to see Boss breaking down in tears again."

"Again?" AiLin narrowed her eyes, "What do you mean by again?"

Si licked his dry lips, speaking about everything honestly as he knew that AiLin was the only one who could help Canary.

"She broke down in tears often. I don’t think that the boss knew about it and seeing that you don’t know about it too, I suspect she’s not aware of her habit."

"What habit?" She asked in a hurry as she didn’t know about this.

"Whenever Boss drink, she would fall asleep. When she wake up late at night, she would just stand near the window and cry. It was—," he sighed as if his throat had been choked. His eyes reddening as he whispered, "She begged for forgiveness for killing someone. Maybe deep down somewhere in Boss’s heart, she still feels horrible for killing someone. I know that guilt of taking a life is too heavy for others, even my siblings still couldn’t stomach their guilt but I’m different and I can handle it."

AiLin stared at Si’s face for a while. This gruff man whose face appeared as if he had came out of the ring of violence had a heart gentler than anyone else. It made AiLin happy to see that there was still a kind soul in this world but at the same time it made her hesitate to give this role to someone so kind. She wondered what was the best thing to do and could only smile to Si, "I will have to take my time to think about it."

"That’s fine, that’s good. Yeah, that’s good enough," whispered Si who then walked out of the car. He stood for a while and finally squeezed out his bow, "Thank you very much for everything Miss AiLin. I promise if one day that you should ever need my help, I will lay my life down for you."

"No."

Si was surprised by her quick response.

"I don’t need anyone to lay their life down for me. In exchange promise me that you would always protect Canary."
