Chapter 116: Holes in Memories

When AiLin had came home, she realized how most servants were nowhere to be found. She took this as a great chance for her to run into her room, so she wouldn’t be found out for lingering outside the house, so that they won’t notice that someone had helped her which would be unaccepted to their eyes as she needed to suffer enough as "punishment".

She also noticed that her father wasn’t around which was a god thing as he would have lingered in the living room, watching TV which meant he would have noticed her presence. So AiLin rushed to take off her shoes, making her way so silently as if she was walking into someone else’s house in a faint tap of footsteps. When she saw that the hallway of the second floor was dark as a pitch black night sky, AiLin breathed out of relief, thinking that Mrs Jiang wasn’t inside the house either. But as she was about to make her way to her room on the far east corner of the hallway, she noticed the sound of someone yelling on top of her voices, coming from Mrs Jiang’s room was a small flickering light, as if she hadn’t turned on the light of the room but a small lamplight that was just enough for someone to grab their surroundings.

AiLin hesitated on coming closer. If she was too nosy and was found out, Mrs Jiang wouldn’t be happy.

So she walked away, about to make her way to her room but stopped when she was intrigued by her name that was called out from Mrs Jiang’s room.

AiLin recalled turning her body toward the faint glimmer of light, seeing that Mrs Jiang was in her room on a phone. She seemed stressed, her face palling and her lips appeared to be red as she had been biting it hard until it bled.

But then it flushed to anger as she yelled, "It could have been a secret for life. My husband didn’t have to know about it! He could have not KNOWN about it."

What was she talking about? What secret? About who?

AiLin pressed her ears to the door, her heart thumped as if something in the back of her head had realized what was going on but it hadn’t dawned clearly to her yet. She listened in and heard Mrs Jiang sighing, "It would have been believable if she looked a fraction like me, just like how MengYao was but she doesn’t look similar to me or him! Now even my husband is suspecting me of infidelity."

AiLin’s eyes widened as she covered her mouth.

"He could have not found out what happened that night when I slept with his older—"

AiLin’s heart raced as she could hear each words clearly.

"—his older brother."

Her mouth parted wide as her eyes turned wide. As if she had seen the words crashing down in front of him, as if the world had been split into two, and as if she had just realized something ugly and humiliating about herself— the fact that she... was a product of infidelity.

Then AiLin ran away in a rush from the room, not wanting to hear anything. Mrs Jiang saw the shadow and rushed outside of the room, when she saw that AiLin had entered her room and the person who had heard it was her, the anger she had for AiLin, her daughter, multiplied, now it had turned to rage as she muttered in a crazed rage, "I should have killed her... killed her for good."

AiLin struggled in her dream.

It was already dark outside the JS Entertainment building with the sky that had dipped from blue to indigo. A moment of silence filled the CEO office where Li ZiChen was simply sitting in midst of the dim lighting. He stared at AiLin, his other hand rubbing the tattoo of the snake that had reached to his wrist. Whenever it’s winter, he could feel that the scar aching for a scratch.

He had removed his outer suit, only having his vest wrapped neatly around his waist. His hair had sloppily fell over his forehead while his almond eyes stared intensely at AiLin who was struggling in her dream earlier. She had again rasped for breath, as if she was chased by something that eventually made him to rush beside her sofa, placing his cold hands gently on her cheeks and called for her name in tender voices, "AiLin? AiLin."

Earlier she seemed to be shivering but now her body was trembling and her breathing was out of sorts, it was a call for help and although he had wanted her to sleep and rest for a longer time, he knew that she needed someone to wake her up from the nightmare that was haunting her.

So he shook her gently, trying to wake her up from her terrible dream. Underneath her closed eyes, something moved, and finally after a struggle of trying to forcefully open her eyes, she could snap it open to find the worried face of Li ZiChen greeting her first. She tried to understand what had happened as the fragments of her nightmares were all around her face, haunting her like a raging nightmare.

Then she pushed herself to sit up, her mind suddenly turning clear as she pressed the back of her palm to her head while Li ZiChen shifted to stare at her expression, wondering why she had looked so frightened and startled as if she had just remembered something she had just long forgotten. And he was correct.

She muttered aloud, "How could I.. forget about it?"

Li ZiChen took her hands, "What is it?"

"I. I remember now. I knew why Mrs Jiang hated me but why did I forgot about it?"

She suddenly held her head and a sense of anxiety filled her heart as she muttered, "Have I been forgetting a lot of my old memories?"

He stared at her, his eyes widening as he asked again, "What do you mean? Explain calmly AiLin, so I can understand."
