Chapter 99: Chapter 99: She’s Just a Little Girl

At 11:30 at night, Su Mu and Fu Shinian sneaked out of the house like thieves, carefully stepping out the door. To avoid disturbing the elderly lady, they decided to walk, which Su Mu thought was a bit whimsical—it would take until dawn to reach a place selling food. However, she kept her doubts to herself, feeling blissful just walking with Fu Shinian.

Only after they left the house did they notice a taxi waiting at the door. Su Mu looked at him:

"Did you call for it?"

"Yes, did Mrs. Fu really want to walk there?"

Su Mu understood then. She had thought he was dealing with work when he was on his phone in the bedroom, but he had actually been arranging a ride. So even before she mentioned she was hungry, he had already decided to take her out for a good meal.

Moved by Fu Shinian’s thoughtfulness, Su Mu felt that even the gentle chilly breeze no longer seemed cold.

Once in the taxi, the smile on Su Mu’s face never faded, and Fu Shinian couldn’t help but look at her, "Are you this happy about going out for supper? Those who don’t know might think the Fu family is mistreating you."

"It’s not the same," Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian. "This is the first time you’ve taken me out to eat since we got married, of course I’m happy."

This remark left Fu Shinian momentarily stunned. He knew Su Mu was not complaining but genuinely thrilled about tonight’s supper. Yet, his ears couldn’t help but find the words somewhat grating—he knew he hadn’t been very good to Su Mu since their marriage, but he hadn’t realized things were so bad that a simple meal could make her this happy.

Su Mu also noticed Fu Shinian’s silence and guessed the reason, feeling somewhat remorseful. Worried he might think she was complaining, she quickly clarified:

"I’m not complaining, I just..."

"I know," Fu Shinian took her hand. "You don’t need to explain."

If Fu Shinian had only said that, Su Mu would have thought he misunderstood. But when he took her hand as he spoke, she knew he truly didn’t think she was complaining.

"So where are we going to eat?"

Fu Shinian looked at her, "Where would you like to go?"

"I’m fine with anything."

As long as he was by her side, she didn’t mind not eating at all.

Eventually, Fu Shinian took Su Mu to a bustling food stall area, which was still busy despite it being November and late at night.

Su Mu hadn’t expected that Fu Shinian would even know about places like food stalls, and she couldn’t help but give him a few extra glances. Catching her look, Fu Shinian slightly curved his lip, "What? I don’t belong in places like this?"

"It feels a bit unexpected."

Fu Shinian gave her a cool glance and strode off, with Su Mu happily catching up to walk beside him. They walked past stall after stall, ignoring enthusiastic vendors, as her entire heart was focused on Fu Shinian until he stopped, turned his face towards her:

"What do you really want to eat? We’ve almost walked through the whole street."

Only then did Su Mu look around at the nearby stalls. The closest was a spicy hot pot stall, and she pointed:

"Is that okay?"

Fu Shinian frowned at the suggestion, "It isn’t healthy."

Su Mu then pointed to a fried skewer stall next to it:

"How about that one?"

"It’s too greasy."

"That rice noodles then?"

"It doesn’t look very sanitary."

Su Mu stopped talking as she looked at Fu Shinian. With his picky nature, he probably wouldn’t agree to eat anything from the whole street, even if she mentioned each one. Noticing Su Mu’s silence, Fu Shinian turned to look at her, noting her aggrieved expression, and smiled faintly:

"What do you want to eat?"

"Is there any point in my saying?" Su Mu pouted, "If you had no plan to let me have a late-night snack, just say it outright. Bringing me to this tempting place and not letting me eat anything is too cruel."

Perhaps their recent harmonious interactions had made Su Mu less cautious than usual and more open and genuine. It turned out she was just a greedy little girl at heart, would get petulant when upset, and was just the most ordinary among the masses. It was only her abnormal marriage that had gradually made her retract all her authenticity, become accommodating, and lose her sense of self.

This was probably the first time Fu Shinian saw such a childish side of Su Mu in front of him, and he smiled slightly:

"Think I’m too opinionated?"

Su Mu didn’t respond, but who could miss the subtext?

"Then suggest another place, and I promise I won’t have any more objections."

Su Mu looked at him skeptically: "Really?"

"Mm."

"Then let’s go for barbecue."

When Fu Shinian and Su Mu were sitting at the barbecue stall, the not-very-busy owner came over to greet them, "Young lady, you’re here again?"

Su Mu sweetly responded:

"I woke up in the middle of the night craving your barbecue. I felt like I wouldn’t be able to sleep all night if I didn’t have it today."

Su Mu ordered some dishes from the menu, then looked up to ask Fu Shinian if he wanted anything. He shook his head lightly: "I had dinner, you go ahead and eat yours."

Su Mu didn’t press him further, knowing his life was always healthy, and he definitely wouldn’t eat anything after 9 PM.

After the owner took the menu and walked away, Su Mu finally noticed that Fu Shinian’s gaze had been on her all along.

"Do you come here often?"

Su Mu smiled faintly: "Jiang Bei and I both love the barbecue here. During our university years, since we weren’t at the same school, we’d occasionally meet up here. It’s really delicious."

Fu Shinian nodded and said nothing more.

Su Mu had always thought that Fu Shinian was even more of a clean freak than Wei Shaoqin, but here he seemed even more at ease than Wei Shaoqin, unaffected by the grease stains on the tables and chairs, without a hint of impatience in his expression.

When the owner came to serve the food, he also brought over 200 yuan:

"Young lady, you were drunk last time, and your friend left in a hurry. When we came to clear the table, we found that he had left the money on the table. He overpaid by 200, so now that you are here, I’m giving it back to you. I love money, brother, but I absolutely won’t take advantage like that."

Su Mu immediately remembered the last time she and Wei Shaoqin came, and she reflexively looked at Fu Shinian, only to find that his expression had finally changed to something like... a smile that wasn’t quite a smile?

"Last time, you were drunk? When did you sneak out here to drink?"

The time shouldn’t be too long ago, since the owner wouldn’t remember otherwise.
