Chapter 96: Raising Such a Big Son for Me
Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Raising Such a Big Son for Me
Granny really liked Wen Shaoyuan, who, as always, charmed her without any sense of awkwardness, making Granny so happy that the conversation inexplicably drifted off-topic. She began looking at Su Mu with a pleading look in her eyes, which made Su Mu feel a bit uncomfortable.
"Granny..."
"You know what I’m referring to." Granny smiled gleefully at Wen Shaoyuan, "I’d love to have a great-grandson as well-behaved and sensible as Shaoyuan. I don’t hold those old feudal ideas; a daughter, a son, all are treasures in my heart. I just don’t know when Susu can fulfill this wish for Granny."
As Wen Shaoyuan listened to Granny’s words, he blinked and looked towards Su Mu:
"Is sister Su planning to have a baby?"
"It’s not your sister Su who wants to have one; it’s Granny who wishes her to. Of course, that depends on what sister Su decides." Granny, holding Wen Shaoyuan’s hand, asked, "Shaoyuan, tell Granny, do you wish sister Su would have a baby to play with you?"
Wen Shaoyuan did not respond immediately; he felt his emotions were very complex, so complex that he didn’t understand exactly what he himself wanted. He did hope for Granny’s words to come true; then he’d have a lovely little brother or sister. But if sister Su really had a little brother or sister, could she no longer be his teacher? Could she never become his mother?
Su Mu didn’t know what Wen Shaoyuan was thinking. She only thought that Granny’s question was a bit too difficult for a five-year-old:
"Granny, you’ve confused Shaoyuan."
Granny chuckled:
"Indeed, what can such a small child understand? But I do think far ahead. If you have a little princess, maybe she could become related to Shaoyuan through marriage."
"Granny, you are thinking too far ahead."
Wen Shaoyuan looked at Granny: "What does ’related through marriage’ mean?"
"It means that when you grow up, if you marry sister Su’s daughter, then you and sister Su would truly become one family."
Wen Shaoyuan stared dumbly at Granny, then turned to gaze blankly at Su Mu, seemingly not quite understanding what was going on, yet he could feel that he did want to always be one family with sister Su.
Back then, nobody could have predicted that Granny’s words would prove prophetic; 20 years later, Wen Shaoyuan indeed married Su Mu’s daughter.
Of course, that’s a story for another time.
Su Mu hadn’t expected Fu Shinian to return so soon; she had stayed the day at the old house with Wen Shaoyuan, and the next day, while playing in the yard with An Le, a car slowly drove into the courtyard. Wen Shaoyuan was the first to notice and, taking An Le by the hand, walked over to Su Mu, who was sitting nearby reading a book:
"Sister Su, we have visitors."
Su Mu looked up and saw Fu Shinian stepping out of the car, their eyes met and Su Mu smiled slightly, while Fu Shinian slowly shifted his gaze away to Wen Shaoyuan beside her.
Fu Shinian’s expression might have scared Wen Shaoyuan, who cautiously moved behind Su Mu. Su Mu stroked his hair softly, reassuring him:
"He’s sister Su’s husband, you don’t have to be afraid."
Wen Shaoyuan looked up at Su Mu: "But he looks very fierce."
Su Mu smiled slightly, said nothing more, and, holding Wen Shaoyuan’s hand, stepped towards him, "You’re back? Weren’t you going to be away for a week?"
Fu Shinian ignored her question, his gaze fixed on Wen Shaoyuan behind her:
"If I hadn’t come back, how would I have known that you managed to raise such a big son for me in such a short time?"
Hearing the unhappiness in his words, Su Mu started to explain:
"No, listen to me explain, I did call you about Shaoyuan’s issue, but you never answered."
"So you decided without consulting me?" he finally looked at Su Mu, "Were you certain that I wouldn’t refuse, or did you think my good mood over the past few days gave you a false sense of confidence?"
Su Mu stared at him blankly for a few seconds before slowly averting her gaze, believing that even if Fu Shinian was dissatisfied with her decision to temporarily bring Wen Shaoyuan back, he wouldn’t say such harsh words. But when he said "my good mood," he was referring to the week before he went on a business trip. Su Mu had thought it was just them getting along naturally, but it turned out he was only cooperating, or even pretending.
As for why he did that, Su Mu roughly knew; perhaps he felt that her care for his grandmother during those days indeed deserved commendation.
And that comment he just made was accusing her of overestimating herself, lacking self-awareness.
Wen Shaoyuan seemed to sense Su Mu’s emotional decline, but since he didn’t know what comforting words to say, he just tightly grasped her hand, and Su Mu noticed and cracked a slight smile.
Fu Shinian saw how well the two cooperated in silence, which only intensified his irritation. Unwilling to watch any longer, he decided to walk towards the house, but unexpectedly Wen Shaoyuan spoke up:
"Uncle."
Fu Shinian stopped in his tracks, looking at him with a still frigid expression.
Wen Shaoyuan: "Uncle, are you blaming Sister Su because of my arrival? If so, I can leave now. I don’t want you two to have any disagreements because of me."
Fu Shinian slightly curved his lips:
"Fine. Shall I have someone send you back?"
Calling Su Mu ’Sister Su’ and referring to himself as ’Uncle,’ did this child have such a big issue with his eyesight that his family never considered taking him to an ophthalmologist?
Just as Su Mu was about to say something, the elderly lady walked out of the house, looking cheerfully at Fu Shinian:
"You’re back?"
Fu Shinian’s demeanor softened slightly as he smiled, "Grandma."
"Shaoyuan is my guest. Are you trying to imply that Grandma is being too meddlesome by sending him away?"
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu, "Grandma is joking; I was just kidding before."
The elderly lady smiled faintly:
"That’s best."
After speaking, she beckoned Wen Shaoyuan to come to her side, took his hand and said, "Come, your hands must be cold from playing so long, come sit inside with Grandma."
The elderly lady and Wen Shaoyuan entered the house first while Su Mu stood silently for a moment before she decided to go inside. However, Fu Shinian stopped her:
"Su Mu, you’ve really mastered how to use Grandma to get the better of me."
Su Mu turned to look at him:
"I didn’t, Grandma wanted to meet Shaoyuan, that’s why I brought him here."
"Would Grandma know about Wen Shaoyuan if you hadn’t mentioned him?" Fu Shinian stepped closer to Su Mu, chuckling softly, "The Wen family is rich and powerful, so their precious grandson has to be looked after by a home tutor. Is it your charm that’s so overwhelming, or are they preparing for you to be his stepmother?"
