Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Grey Hair to Black Hair

Qiao Yu was acutely aware of what Grandma meant to Fu Shinian, and didn’t beat around the bush in his reply:

"Rest assured, it’s just a common fever, nothing serious."

Fu Shinian looked at him, "Are you certain?"

Qiao Yu patted his shoulder, "Even if you don’t trust my medical skills, you should trust Doctor Zhang, shouldn’t you?"

Fu Shinian turned to Doctor Zhang. Although the older man’s face bore the clear signs of age, he looked in good spirits. He smiled at Fu Shinian:

"Mr. Fu, rest assured, just as Doctor Qiao said, it really is just a common fever this time. It looks a bit frightening because the temperature was quite high, but we’ve already given her an IV drip. Once the fever comes down, there shouldn’t be a problem. If you are still worried, you can go to the hospital for a comprehensive check-up after she recovers, especially since she underwent major surgery two years ago. It’s sensible to be cautious."

The heart that had been in his throat finally settled down after Doctor Zhang’s words, and he breathed a sigh of relief:

"Thank you."

"You’re welcome."

Su Mu also felt at ease and instructed Auntie Wang to arrange for a driver to take Doctor Zhang back home.

Fu Shinian and Su Mu went to the room to see Grandma, who was still in a fever-induced slumber. Perhaps feeling unwell, her brows were lightly furrowed. Fu Shinian stood by her side feeling a deep sense of helplessness; no matter how much wealth he possessed, he was powerless when faced with illness and aging.

There was actually very little he could do for Grandma.

Fu Shinian had a meeting in the morning and had to leave. Su Mu walked him to the door and handed him his coat, saying softly:

"You go to work without worry, I’ll take good care of Grandma at home. I’ll call you immediately if there’s anything."

He reached out to touch her face, "You’re working hard."

Su Mu smiled tenderly:

"So are you. I know your mood going to the company now must be even heavier than mine."

Fu Shinian looked at her deeply, said nothing more, and turned to leave.

Grandma woke up close to noon, and although she still had a bit of a fever, her temperature had clearly fallen, and both her complexion and spirits were significantly better. After Su Mu fed her some light food, Grandma leaned against the headboard and talked with Su Mu for a while, and finally looked at her tenderly:

"We frightened you and Shinian, didn’t we?"

Su Mu held her hand, "Now that Grandma knows, please don’t scare us like this in the future."

Grandma smiled and said nothing, knowing some things are better left un-promised when even she wasn’t certain of them.

Su Mu understood Grandma’s sentimentality and took out her phone to change the subject: "Grandma, how about we take a photo together? Shinian must be very worried about you. I’ll send it to him to see."

Grandma nodded, "Good."

Just as Fu Shinian finished his meeting and was preparing to head back to the old house, his phone rang with a photo message from Su Mu. He clicked on it as he stepped into the elevator, and in the moment the photo opened, his steps slowed slightly.

The two people in the photo, one with graying hair, the other with black tresses, leaned their heads and shoulders against each other, smiling at the camera with identical curves at the corners of their mouths, which touched the softest inch at the bottom of his heart.

Following behind Fu Shinian, Song Yi noticed his movement and reminded him with a voice, "Mr. Fu?"

Fu Shinian returned to his senses and smiled faintly before stepping into the elevator.

On the way back to the old house, Fu Shinian sat in the back seat, looking at that photo the entire time. He couldn’t help but think that if none of those things had happened back then, if his grandmother hadn’t contracted uremia, his wife now might have been Qin Nianwan or another well-bred lady suitable for marriage. He knew that they would also make good granddaughters-in-law, who, for whatever reason, could make the old lady just as happy as Su Mu did. Yet, they certainly wouldn’t have done what Su Mu did the night before, humbling themselves before the old lady to kneel and wash her feet.

What they could do, Su Mu could do; what they couldn’t, Su Mu had already done.

Fu Shinian saved the photo and set it as his screensaver.

For a whole week, Su Mu stayed in the old house to care for her grandmother. When Fu Shinian wasn’t busy, he would join her in keeping the old lady company, talking and watching TV, as if all the worldly noise couldn’t disturb the peacefulness of the old house. That was their rare moment of warmth and affection.

It was the weekend today. Su Mu sat with the old lady in the living room, watching the popular TV series "Nirvana in Fire." Fu Shinian sat beside them, thoroughly enjoying the show. All of Su Mu’s attention had been on the plot, but somehow, Fu Shinian had drawn her gaze. She hadn’t expected that one day he would sit quietly beside her, watching TV together.

Though it was for grandma’s sake, when rounded up, it was like he was accompanying her too.

Fu Shinian later became aware of Su Mu’s gaze, but he didn’t look at her. Instead, he stretched out his hand quietly and held hers, whispering softly,

"Focus on the show. If the old lady asks you about the plot later, make sure you can answer."

All of Su Mu’s senses were concentrated on his hand, which covered the back of hers. She glanced up at him, quietly flipped her hand over, and then they, fingers tightly intertwined.

She was nervous and needed some courage to make this move, unsure if he would dislike or reject it, but he didn’t. He simply looked down at their clasped hands, smiled lightly, and then gripped tighter.

At that moment, Su Mu’s entire heart was filled.

The old lady also saw this scene and smiled warmly.

When Fu Shinian’s phone rang, Su Mu saw the caller ID: Qin Nianwan.

He let go of her hand and gently patted the back of it, "I’m going to take a call."

Her sinking heart was soothed by his small gesture. She nodded, "Okay."

As Su Mu’s gaze followed the departing Fu Shinian, she only realized that her grandmother had been watching her all along when she came back to her senses. She smiled sheepishly, and the old lady cheerfully said, "There’s no need to be embarrassed. When I was young, I couldn’t bear to be away from your grandfather for even a minute of the day."

Before Fu Shinian returned, Su Mu’s phone started ringing. She glanced at the caller ID and picked up,

"What’s wrong?"

Wei Shaoqin’s infuriated voice surged over like a tide,

"Su Mu, is Fu Shinian sick or what? Is he sick?! This is the third car that has been burnt today because the fuel line was cut. Is he trying to burn me alive? Do you believe I’m going to sue him and ask the police to start an investigation?"

Startled by his shouting, Su Mu quickly cleared her thoughts. Not wanting to worry the old lady, she stood up and went to the side,

"Why would Shinian cut the fuel lines of your cars? He definitely wouldn’t do such a thing without reason. Could it be, was it you who had someone cut the brake lines at the film city?"
