Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Without Regret

At this moment, Su Mu sat in Wei Shaoqin’s car, and after calling Jiang Bei, she muted her phone and tossed it into her bag. She knew that Fu Shinian would never call her, but she did it anyway, because that was the only way for Su Mu to feel that it wasn’t that he didn’t look for her, but rather, she didn’t want to deal with him. That was all.

Jiang Bei hadn’t seen Su Mu drunk in a very long time, but now, seeing her unable to stand steadily and fully relying on Wei Shaoqin for support, she even doubted her own eyes. However, she still hurriedly went to meet them, wanting to take Su Mu from Wei Shaoqin’s hands:

"You’re really going out of your way, let me do it."

Wei Shaoqin chuckled, "I’m afraid your petite frame can’t bear her weight; it’s better if I take her upstairs."

Jiang Bei didn’t resist, as it indeed would have been difficult for her alone to take Su Mu upstairs.

Together, they supported Su Mu to the bed, and only then did Jiang Bei breathe a sigh of relief. Turning around, she saw Wei Shaoqin also panting, and spoke up:

"I’ll get you a glass of water."

"No rush," Wei Shaoqin stopped her: "I’ll be leaving now."

Jiang Bei didn’t try to keep him, as it was somewhat inconvenient. After seeing Wei Shaoqin off, Jiang Bei immediately returned to Su Mu’s side and patted her face:

"Are you truly drunk, or are you faking it?"

Su Mu opened her eyes groggily, taking a glance at her, then stared blankly at the ceiling with no focus in her eyes, as if not understanding where she was. Jiang Bei knew, this was genuine drunkenness.

"Does Fu Shinian know you’re here?"

Su Mu furrowed her brows: "Why should I let him know!"

Jiang Bei looked at her speechlessly; she had never seen Su Mu this defiant towards Fu Shinian while sober. She had to resort to drunken antics to show her indifference towards the man. Internally, Jiang Bei scorned her. She wasn’t worried that Fu Shinian wouldn’t know Su Mu’s whereabouts, but she did care that if Su Mu did not return home for a night without notifying him in advance, that man might utter some hurtful words to injure Su Mu.

Originally, she intended to call Fu Shinian, but then thought better of it. Su Mu had already suffered countless grievances at his hands; another one wouldn’t make much difference. Perhaps making Fu Shinian worry and feel anxious for a while wouldn’t be so bad after all.

----

When Su Mu woke up the next day, her head was splitting with pain, and she almost wished she could bash her head against the wall and die. Holding her temples, she surveyed the unfamiliar, yet not entirely strange room, and knew that she had troubled Jiang Bei the night before.

As Su Mu stepped out of the bedroom, Jiang Bei was eating breakfast. Seeing her disheveled appearance, Jiang Bei lazily watched her while continuing to eat her bread slices:

"I thought you would sleep until noon before waking up."

"Why am I here?"

"You really don’t remember what happened last night?" exclaimed Jiang Bei, "You didn’t drink that much. At most, you were just a bit out of it, but still knew enough to be angry with Fu Shinian."

Upon the mention of Fu Shinian, Su Mu was stunned, but before she could figure out the reason, Jiang Bei interrupted her thoughts:

"Did you and Fu Shinian have another fight?"

She deliberately emphasized the word "again," reminding her that things with Fu Shinian seemed never to go smoothly.

With a headache and not in the mood to ponder further, Su Mu walked over and took a seat in front of Jiang Bei. Jiang Bei stood up and went to the kitchen to pour her a glass of honey water, placing it in front of her:

"You didn’t go home last night and didn’t inform him, did you? It’s been two years since you got married, and this is the first time I’ve seen you stand your ground so strongly against Fu Shinian. It’s ironic that it took getting drunk to do it. The unfortunate marriage seems to have ground down all your edges."

Su Mu took a sip of honey water:

"Anyway, whether I go back or not, he won’t care."

"That’s true, you have no status in his eyes." Jiang Bei spoke with the blunt honesty of an onlooker, "But weren’t you also a bit too bold last night? Getting that drunk with a man, aren’t you afraid of what he might do to you?"

Truth be told, Su Mu was somewhat scared as well, but what had happened had already happened, and anything she said now seemed too late. She laughed awkwardly:

"It won’t happen again."

Jiang Bei then said nothing more.

Su Mu took out her phone and glanced at it. Two missed calls from the same number, the landline from Bishui Yuntian, one around 10 o’clock and the other just before 11 o’clock. They must have been from Auntie Lin, who was worried about her. As for Fu Shinian, there was not a trace of a message.

Seeing her barely concealed disappointment, Jiang Bei asked:

"Are you going back today?"

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds: "We’ll see."

The unpleasantness between them yesterday indeed angered Su Mu, but this was not the first time for them. She hadn’t thought to vent her dissatisfaction by not returning home; last night’s visit to Jiang Bei was probably due to the influence of alcohol. If she were sober, she wouldn’t have failed to return.

She had grown accustomed to compromise.

But now that there was no going back, to Fu Shinian, it seemed there was no great difference whether she returned today or not.

——

Su Mu ended up staying at Jiang Bei’s home for three days, without returning home or contacting Fu Shinian. And of course, Fu Shinian was not likely to initiate contact with her. Their relationship seemed to have cooled down. In Jiang Bei’s words, it was as if Su Mu and Fu Shinian had already divorced, and she had been chased out with nowhere to go.

During those three days, Su Mu did not go to the Wen Family to teach. Wen Han had called her earlier to let her know that Wen Shaoyuan’s grandmother had returned from abroad. For the next few days, he would be with his grandmother, so there was no need for her to come over.

Jiang Bei was surprised when she heard this news:

"That woman is back from abroad?"

Detecting an unfriendly tone in Jiang Bei’s voice, Su Mu looked up at her: "Judging by your tone, you seem to have some issues with Shaoyuan’s grandmother."

"She and I don’t have any grudges, what issues could I possibly have with her? It’s just that she’s very ambitious. It was she who drugged her own daughter to end up in Wen Han’s bed, and when she got pregnant, Wen Han married her to take responsibility. Ever since then, she has been using the Wen family’s name to swindle and deceive everywhere."

It was the first time Su Mu had heard about Wen Shaoyuan’s mother’s story, so she asked another question:

"What about Shaoyuan’s mother then?"

"She died in childbirth." Jiang Bei said regretfully: "It happened right here in our hospital, back when I was still an intern. Amniotic fluid embolism, there was nothing we could do."

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, unable to imagine what regrets that woman must have carried as she left the world. She hadn’t even had the chance to see her child. Seeing Su Mu’s state, Jiang Bei knew what she was thinking and tapped her on the head:

"Don’t be so sentimental, for Wen Shaoyuan’s mother, she wouldn’t have seen it as a regret."

"Why not?"

"Because she didn’t love Wen Shaoyuan, nor did she love Wen Han. She had someone she loved, but couldn’t be with him due to her own mother."
