Chapter 70: Chapter 70 It’s better to owe me than to owe them
Wen Han!
Su Mu straightened up, looking at the man who should have left already in front of her, somewhat in disbelief. He gave her a faint glance and said,
"Are you hurt?"
Su Mu shook her head. "No."
Wen Han handed back the handbag to Su Mu,
"Shaoyuan helped you retrieve it from the restaurant, we forgot to return it when we parted."
Su Mu received the bag and whispered her thanks, "Thank you."
Wen Han wanted to say something more to Su Mu, but Li Ge interrupted their eyebrow-raising conversation,
"Are you her man?"
Wen Han stretched out his hand to pull Su Mu behind him, his gaze landing lightly on Li Ge.
Li Ge snorted softly as he looked at the scene before him and hopped off the table,
"It looks like you’ve decided to meddle in this matter."
Wen Han gave a nonchalant reply, "Hmm, I don’t like to see men bullying women."
"You aware she owes us some money?"
Wen Han ignored his words, his eyes falling on the fatty. He slowly reached out his hand and said indifferently, "Phone, give it to me."
"You think you can just have it ’cause you ask, who do you think you are?"
The fatty hadn’t finished speaking when Wen Han made his move. No one saw how he did it, and even the fatty didn’t know what happened. He only felt a shadow loom before his eyes, and the next second, his wrist was seized in a painful grip, making him cry out,
"Don’t don’t don’t, let me go."
"I’d advise you not to move, I could use a bit more force and you’d end up in the orthopedics ward."
The fatty got the message and didn’t dare make another move.
"Phone. Give it to me."
The fatty didn’t dare to boast any longer and handed over the phone enduring the pain, "Here, can you let go of me now?"
Wen Han took the phone and released the fatty, who walked over to Li Ge clutching his hurt wrist, "Bro, what do we do now?"
Wen Han disregarded them, taking the phone to Su Mu and handing it over to her,
"Here."
Su Mu took it, "Thank you."
While they exchanged words, someone had already gone to the door to pull down the shutter, obviously not intending to let them leave. Su Mu was somewhat nervous, but Wen Han wasn’t the slightest bit perturbed by the situation. He just looked at Su Mu and took off his suit jacket, handing it to her,
"I’m here."
With his background, dealing with these few people was not an issue, but Su Mu didn’t want to involve him in this troublesome matter, though she seemed to have no other choice.
Wen Han led her to a corner, "Stand here, and if you’re scared, close your eyes."
Su Mu looked at him, "Be careful."
Wen Han gave her a reassuring smile, said nothing more, and turned to face the group.
"Kid, I’d advise you to be smart. Even if you’ve got some skill, can you take all of us down?" Li Ge weighed his wooden stick, "Don’t end up getting hurt and have us compensate you for medical bills."
"That works for me," Wen Han said nonchalantly as he rolled his shirt sleeves up to his elbows. "Since we’re clear, that saves me the trouble of calling an ambulance for you guys to go to the hospital."
Five minutes? Three minutes? Or perhaps they didn’t even need a minute, as all five men lay on the ground, moaning in pain, while Wen Han breathed normally, as if he hadn’t participated in the scuffle. Moments later, he walked to the door and reopened the shutter that had just been pulled down. Su Mu thought he would leave then, but he didn’t. He picked up a stool to sit at the doorway and asked Su Mu,
"Do you owe them money?"
Su Mu didn’t hesitate to admit it and nodded, "Yes."
"How much?"
Su Mu roughly calculated, "About 800,000 or so."
Wen Han said nothing more and looked at the groaning men on the ground, "Did you bring the contract?"
Su Mu immediately knew what he was planning and spoke up to stop him,
"You don’t have to."
Wen Han wasn’t surprised by her refusal as he looked at Su Mu,
"I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it for Shaoyuan. If they can follow you today, it’s possible they might do something to Shaoyuan tomorrow to make you pay your debts. Although the likelihood is slim, I still don’t want such uncertainties around Shaoyuan’s life. I’ll pay for you, not that I don’t want the money back. You can pay me back slowly, or I can deduct it from your tutoring fees. Owing me is much safer than owing them."
Su Mu never expected the day would end with Wen Han paying her debts. Yet when those debt contracts were returned to her hands, she had to believe he really did it, transferring the money right there so she no longer had any ties with these people.
But she felt anything but relieved; in fact, it weighed heavier on her than before.
Once the men left, Wen Han walked over to Su Mu, took his suit jacket from her arms, casually draping it over his own, and glanced at his watch,
"I’m in a hurry and probably won’t be able to see you home. Can you get back by yourself?"
Su Mu nodded, "You’ve troubled yourself enough."
Wen Han opened his mouth as if to say something, but ultimately, he said nothing more, bid her goodbye, and turned away.
When Wen Han returned to the car, Wen Shaoyuan was already drowsy. Seeing Wen Han return, he became much more alert:
"Daddy, those people didn’t hurt Sister Su, did they?"
"No." Wen Han started the engine, and an image of Su Mu looking down with guilt inexplicably came to his mind.
Relieved to hear that Sister Su was okay, Wen Shaoyuan relaxed, but his lips puckered slightly at the thought of the person they were about to meet:
"Do we really have to go pick up Grandma?"
Wen Han glanced at his son, "Yes, it’s about time we got there."
"I don’t like Grandma."
Wen Han was silent for a few seconds before speaking slowly, "After all, she is your grandmother."
——
Fu Shinian didn’t come back for dinner, and Su Mu began to feel drowsy as she waited until ten o’clock. She was about to lie down to sleep when she heard the sound of a car downstairs, followed shortly after by the sound of the door opening.
Su Mu went downstairs, just in time to see Song Yi helping Fu Shinian into the living room. She hurried forward, catching the pungent smell of alcohol and frowning slightly:
"Why have you drunk so much?"
Song Yi looked at Su Mu somewhat unnaturally, then said, "Mr. Fu was in high spirits today, and no one could stop him. Madam, you might want to have Auntie Lin make a bowl of sobering-up soup? Otherwise, he might have a headache in the morning."
After Song Yi had left, Su Mu returned to the living room. Fu Shinian was already lying on the sofa, an arm over his forehead to shield himself from the glare of the daylight. His lips were slightly downturned, appearing quite uncomfortable. She walked over, intending to massage his head, but he swiftly caught her wrist:
"What are you doing?"
Su Mu looked at him, "Shall we go upstairs? It would be uncomfortable to rest here."
Her voice was soft, a tone Fu Shinian had never heard from her before, as though she was coaxing a child. Fu Shinian smiled faintly. Su Mu thought he had agreed, but the next second, she was pulled into his arms. Startled, she quickly realized that because she feared Auntie Lin might appear any second, she tried to get up, only to encounter an even stronger grip from Fu Shinian:
"Running away? Are you afraid I’ll eat you?"
Su Mu stopped moving; when he said that, it usually meant that he truly did want to ’eat’ her.
Fortunately, Auntie Lin didn’t come out, but if Fu Shinian really lost control right there, there was no guarantee that Auntie Lin wouldn’t appear. Su Mu could only coax him:
"Shinian, shall we go upstairs?"
Fu Shinian didn’t move but asked her a question:
"Did you call me at noon?"
"Yes, at that time you were in a meeting."
"Did you want something?"
Su Mu paused for a few seconds, "No, I just wanted to ask if you had eaten."
"And what about you? What were you doing at that time?"
"I was having lunch near the mall with Xiaobei."
The next second, Fu Shinian let go of Su Mu, sat up and looked at her. Su Mu was flustered under his gaze:
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
"What do you think?" Fu Shinian looked into the clear depths of Su Mu’s eyes, showing no signs of drunkenness, which made one doubt that his previous state was nothing but an illusion.
Su Mu began to explain something, but Fu Shinian had already risen from the sofa. Though his body was a bit unsteady, he still headed upstairs. Su Mu stepped forward to support him. Fu Shinian did not refuse, but his voice was cool:
"Is this attentive behavior because you’ve done something wrong, or because you want it?"
Su Mu quietly helped him up the stairs without responding to his teasing, simply explaining:
"I was out shopping with Xiaobei at noon and ran into Wei Shaoqin. He snatched my wallet and I had no money to pay the bill, so I called you. I didn’t mention it just now because the matter was resolved and it seemed unnecessary; I had no intention of deceiving you."
Fu Shinian laughed lightly in response:
"After you’ve already told a lie, do you think I still want to know the truth?"
It was she who had concealed the truth first, so Su Mu didn’t blame him.
She supported him all the way to the master bedroom. As they entered, he suddenly took the initiative, turning her around and pressing her against the door, his eyes intense:
"Shall we shower first, or get straight to it?"
Su Mu looked up at him and, knowing he was determined and that arguing was futile, she simply said:
"I’ve already showered."
"Then we’ll get straight to it."
The next second, he leaned down to kiss her, not giving her another chance to speak.
Fu Shinian didn’t even make it back to the bed and just took her there. This disrespectfully forceful act was something Su Mu found difficult to accept, as it had been a long time since he’d disregarded her feelings. She wasn’t sure what had gotten into him today, but thankfully, although she felt tense, it wasn’t as painful as it had been on previous occasions.
Afterwards, Fu Shinian left for the bathroom without lingering. Su Mu, exhausted, still got dressed despite her discomfort and went downstairs to make sobering-up soup. Sometimes, even he felt that his affection was too humble. As she carried the sobering-up soup back to the bedroom, he was just coming out of the bathroom, his demeanor much softer than before.
Su Mu approached:
"Drink the soup. I’ve tested it; the temperature is just right."
The room was quiet after the lights were off, but Su Mu stayed awake because Fu Shinian’s breathing was heavy and uneven, unlike his usual steady rhythm. She turned quietly to look at him, seeing that he seemed to be frowning slightly.
She had drunk alcohol before. Although she wasn’t sure if it was the same for everyone, Fu Shinian’s condition seemed to resemble her own bouts of drunken headaches.
Su Mu sat up, leaned against the headboard, and gently placed her hands on both of his temples to start massaging him. Fu Shinian opened his eyes and, in the darkness, quickly and accurately captured her presence. Su Mu merely smiled slightly:
"Go to sleep."
