Chapter 69: Chapter 69 Coming Prepared
Su Mu originally thought it would be Wen Han and Wen Shaoyuan returning home while she and Jiang Bei continued shopping, but unexpectedly, before Wen Han could arrive, Jiang Bei was called back to the hospital by a phone call. She left in such a hurry she didn’t even have time to say a word to Su Mu.
In fact, Su Mu wanted to tell her to drive safely, and also wanted to say: her wallet had been taken away by Wei Shaoqin, and she had no money to settle the bill.
The tutoring fees she had earned were given to the nursing home yesterday, and now her card was completely empty. The only cash she had was in her wallet, which was now taken by Wei Shaoqin. Just as she was about to call Fu Shinian, Wen Han had already arrived, dressed uncommonly in a suit, looking even more slender and distinguished.
Su Mu ended her call.
Wen Han unbuttoned his suit and sat down opposite Su Mu:
"Where’s Xiaobei?"
"Xiaobei’s aunt had an emergency at the hospital and just left."
Wen Han nodded without saying anything further. Su Mu looked at him:
"Have you eaten? Would you like something to eat?"
"No need, I’ve already eaten."
Wen Shaoyuan hadn’t seen Wen Han in a week, and now, rushing to his side, he had endless things to say. Seeing this, Su Mu stood up and apologetically said:
"I’m going to make a phone call."
"Alright."
Watching Su Mu walk away, Wen Shaoyuan whispered into Wen Han’s ear:
"Dad, it seems like Sister Su is out of money. Xiaobei’s aunt left in such a hurry, it seems she didn’t settle the bill. Do you want to go help with the check?"
Wen Han was somewhat incredulous, taking a napkin to wipe the grease from Wen Shaoyuan’s mouth:
"How do you know Su Mu is out of money?"
"We were shopping today, and Xiaobei’s aunt bought a lot of clothes, but Sister Su didn’t buy a single thing. And after Xiaobei’s aunt left, I noticed Sister Su kept looking at her phone."
Wen Han smiled and said nothing more.
Su Mu called Fu Shinian. The phone was quickly answered, not by Fu Shinian himself, but by Song Yi:
"Madam, Mr. Fu is in a meeting. If there’s something you can tell me first."
Su Mu glanced at the time: "He’s still in a meeting at this time, hasn’t he eaten yet?"
"Not yet, a small problem has arisen with a project. Mr. Fu is handling it. I’ve already ordered food for him. He’ll eat as soon as the meeting is over, so Madam doesn’t need to worry."
Su Mu responded with a sigh of relief: "That’s good."
"Does Madam have a matter to discuss with Mr. Fu?"
After a few seconds of silence: "No, I was just calling to ask if he had eaten."
After hanging up the phone, Song Yi cautiously handed it back to Fu Shinian, who was sitting in the back seat of the car. Song Yi was originally meant to be socializing, but at a red light, he suddenly spotted Su Mu through the restaurant window and kindly pointed it out, prompting Fu Shinian to ask him to pull over.
Song Yi could tell that Fu Shinian wanted to go and greet her, which was why he had allowed the car to stop. Yet, his intentions to get out of the car never materialized, because the very next second, a man took a seat opposite Su Mu.
If Song Yi was not mistaken, that was the man he had seen talking to the Madam at the entrance of the neighborhood that night.
He felt deeply that the warning Fu Shinian gave him last time wasn’t wrong; his own words did indeed seem to be growing by the day. If he hadn’t reminded him out of turn, perhaps the atmosphere in the car wouldn’t feel as chilling as it did now.
Just as Su Mu was about to turn back, she discovered Wen Han and Wen Shaoyuan walking towards her. She approached them, and just as she was about to say something, Wen Han spoke first:
"Let’s go."
"That bill..."
"It’s already been settled."
Su Mu was taken aback, then said, "Then I’ll transfer the money to you later."
"No need," Wen Han looked at her. "You’ve taken the trouble to care for Shaoyuan, it’s only right that I treat you to a meal."
After saying that, he didn’t say anything more and headed straight to the entrance.
Wen Han suggested taking Su Mu back home, but Su Mu shook her head and refused:
"You and Shaoyuan must have other things to do, I won’t impose any longer. I can just take a bus back home; it’s very convenient."
Wen Han didn’t insist, as he indeed had something to do. Shaoyuan’s grandmother had returned from abroad, and he was in a hurry to pick her up at the airport.
"Okay then, be careful on your way."
After watching them leave, Su Mu began to slowly walk towards the bus stop, but as she walked, she felt as though she had forgotten something. It was only when she stopped to check that she realized her bag was missing. Just as she was about to go back to look for it, two familiar faces suddenly appeared before her.
Su Mu recognized them; they were her father’s creditors. After her father’s death, the debts had fallen onto her, and she had willingly taken them on. Previously, Su Mu would make monthly payments to them, but due to her sudden resignation and her mother’s medical expenses, she had been unable to make payments for the past two months.
Seeing them now, without them even speaking, she knew their purpose.
"Brother Li," Su Mu greeted first.
"Hey, I thought Miss Su was going to pretend she didn’t know the two of us brothers, especially since it’s been two months without receiving your payment and we couldn’t get through to your phone."
Su Mu had never considered evading her debts. When she resigned from her job in the first month, she had explained the situation to them, and because she had always been punctual with the payments before, the two men felt it could be worked out. However, in the second month, not only did they not receive any payment, but they also couldn’t reach her at all.
"Sorry, I lost my phone and couldn’t contact you in time."
"No hurry, now that we’ve met, let’s find a place to have tea?"
Su Mu also didn’t want to get entangled with the two of them on the street. She looked around, looking for a KFC or someplace similar, but Brother Li rejected her suggestion:
"How could we go to such a nice place? There’s a noodle shop up ahead. We brothers hadn’t had lunch yet; let’s go there."
It was only when they reached the noodle shop that Su Mu realized there were three familiar faces in the shop – also her creditors; aside from them, there was nobody else in the shop.
One of them started to explain: "Miss Su, don’t be scared. This is my brother’s shop; we borrowed it."
Su Mu knew that they had come prepared.
Her father, in an attempt to revive the nearly bankrupt hotel, had taken out many private loans since the bank wouldn’t lend him any money. The amounts were significant, but in the end, none of it changed the hotel’s eventual demise.
Brother Li seemed to be the key figure who had brought these people together. At that moment, he jumped up onto a table, lit a cigarette, and said:
"I originally thought you were just unlucky, inheriting such a massive debt from your father. That’s why I agreed to let you repay the money in installments. But a few days ago, when I incidentally saw you, I realized you were living a good life, staying in a luxury house with a private car service. Are you making fun of us brothers?"
Su Mu did not expect that they had seen her before and even knew where she lived. This meant that the paranoia she had been feeling in recent days was not unfounded; someone had indeed been tracking her.
However, Su Mu didn’t know how to explain to them that, although her life appeared as they had seen, she didn’t actually have any money, and she feared they wouldn’t believe her even if she told them:
"I don’t have any money right now. I’ve just found a job recently. Could you perhaps be a bit more flexible for a few more days? I will definitely transfer the money to your accounts in a few days."
"When you said a few days last time, I agreed. But what did you do? I almost couldn’t contact you. Do you think I can still trust you? Besides, don’t play poor with me here. I didn’t come to you for the money from these two months; I’m telling you that the installment plan is canceled. I want you to pay off the remaining 200,000 all at once."
Su Mu wasn’t surprised, she called this human nature.
"Brother Li, you should also know that I could have chosen not to repay the debt my father owed you. There’s no legal obligation for a child to pay off a parent’s debts. But I willingly took it upon my shoulders, if only to allow my father to rest in peace above. If you all are willing to stick to the original agreement, I’ll make sure not to miss a single payment. The money I owe you, I will also find a way to pay it back within a week. But if you want me to pay everything at once, I don’t have that capability, and I may have to reconsider whether to continue making future payments to you."
"Not pay? You say it as if it’s simple, but that depends on whether we agree!" Brother Li’s chubby companion immediately got angry hearing this, stepping forward and grabbing Su Mu’s wrist: "Then today we’ll just abduct you and have your man send the money over. I don’t believe you live in such a nice house and can’t come up with those 200,000!"
Su Mu couldn’t break free and could only look at Brother Li, not expecting that he would actually condone this approach:
"Miss Su, frankly speaking, there aren’t many good people in our line of work. Everyone is out for money, and if push comes to shove, we don’t shy from extreme measures. I won’t lie, I’ve run into some troubles myself lately. While I’m pressing you for money, others are breathing down my neck just the same. You’re not truly unable to pay off this debt, so why make everything so complicated?"
Su Mu never sought trouble, but she wasn’t afraid of it either. In her life, apart from Fu Shinian, she had not been afraid of anyone, and even now was no exception.
"Is it Brother Li’s intention to drive me to death? If that’s the case, you better think carefully, because even if you do force me, I still don’t have 200,000 to give you right now."
The atmosphere turned tense, and Brother Li looked at Su Mu, uncertain whether she truly had no money or simply didn’t want to pay. Before he could figure it out, the chubby man lost his patience and snatched Su Mu’s phone:
"If you won’t pay, I’ll find someone to do it on your behalf. I’m calling your man now. If he doesn’t show, we’ll take matters into our own hands and collect some interest."
Su Mu’s biggest worry was that Fu Shinian would find out about all her troublesome affairs. Hearing the chubby man say this, she instinctively tried to grab her phone, but how could she possibly overpower a man much bigger and stronger than she was?
The chubby man was not the type to treat women gently and, irritated, forcefully shoved Su Mu away. If someone hadn’t quickly steadied her from behind, Su Mu would undoubtedly have fallen to the ground by now.
Before Su Mu could see who it was behind her, a familiar voice ominously made its way to her ears from above:
"Give me the phone."
