Chapter 66: Chapter 66 Just Because I Like You

When Qiao Yu saw Fu Shinian appear, he gave a slight smile:

"You’re actually not angry?"

Fu Shinian took a seat and kicked Ji Nanfeng in the leg: "Coming to my house for a meal and gossiping about my family, do you think I’m too easy-going?"

Ji Nanfeng wasn’t upset either, and laughed heartily:

"I’m your good brother after all, constantly keeping an eye on your wife to see if she’s done anything to wrong you. In case you really end up wearing a green hat, it will give me one more joke, won’t it?"

Fu Shinian huffed lightly, too lazy to bother with him, but Qiao Yu was curious:

"Su Mu seems like she can’t stay idle. You’d say she had a decent job at Junyue Hotel before, but instead of staying at home after quitting, she actually went to be a chauffeur. And after Wei Shaoqin messed up the chauffeur and milk tea shop jobs, she even ran off to be a tutor. If I didn’t know she was your wife, I’d really think she was desperately short of money."

Fu Shinian sat in a corner of the sofa, listening to them talk about the person who was busy in the kitchen at that moment, appearing unconcerned and as if it had nothing to do with himself. Yet, Qiao Yu’s guess was not wrong—Su Mu indeed was in great need of money, but even in her dire needs, she had never spent a dime of her own.

Just a few days ago, Song Yi went to the bank to print out a statement and found that the 62.2 million was still there untouched.

Sometimes, even Fu Shinian didn’t know why she was so stubborn and insistent.

Seeing that Fu Shinian didn’t want to talk about these things, Qiao Yu changed the subject:

"Did you really transfer that Lin Hai land to Wei Shaoqin?"

Fu Shinian acknowledged with a word:

"A money-making deal, why wouldn’t I do it?"

Ji Nanfeng couldn’t help but laugh:

"In the past few months, wouldn’t you say it’s both ’Defeated by Su Mu, succeeded by Su Mu’ for Wei Shaoqin? He probably never dreamed that Su Mu would have such a big impact on his business. To unthinkably lose the Lin Hai land and then, because he saved Su Mu, to avoid the loss on Mt. Jing. And finally, the Lin Hai land came back to his hands. All this roundabout hassle, fucking exhausting."

Fu Shinian looked at him indifferently:

"A piece of land I held for just over a month, flipped to make 10 billion in profit. Tired? Don’t tell me you’re the one underneath when you’re in bed?"

Ji Nanfeng laughed:

"Why don’t you give it a try?"

"Forget it. I’m afraid you couldn’t handle my intensity."

"..."

Su Mu’s cooking skills elicited unanimous praise from them, and even Ji Nanfeng, who came with the intention of picking faults, was impressed and gave Su Mu a thumbs up. However, his heart wasn’t so kind, as he still said what he had to say:

"Who would have thought, you actually have such good cooking skills. Since that’s the case, why go to some private chef at noon with Wen Han and the others? Why not do it straight at home? Wouldn’t that seem warmer? More like a family?"

Su Mu’s mouthful of rice got stuck in her throat, unable to go down. She glared at him fiercely, yet he behaved as if he didn’t feel it, grinning at Su Mu with pride, as if he had done something remarkable.

She couldn’t show her irritation; doing so would reveal her own insecurities. Su Mu swallowed the rice in her mouth calmly, glanced at the unruffled Fu Shinian, and began to speak:

"This noon, I..."

"Eat," Fu Shinian interrupted her explanation and then lazily looked towards Ji Nanfeng, "Does Elder Master Ji know how bad your table manners are?"

The Ji Family had always enforced strict discipline, yet they had still raised a prodigal son like Ji Nanfeng. But even Ji Nanfeng had to fear Elder Master Ji to some extent, and since he had achieved his goal for the day, he simply raised his eyebrows without saying another word.

Ji Nanfeng wasn’t one to begrudge others their happiness; he knew that Fu Shinian truly hadn’t taken today’s incident to heart. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have declined Ji Nanfeng’s invitation just to come back and have dinner with Su Mu. If there had really been an issue, Ji Nanfeng would never do something as cruel as rubbing salt in a brother’s wounds.

Qiao Yu couldn’t help but speak up, "You’ve said way too much nonsense today!"

Ji Nanfeng pursed his lips, "Okok, eating from someone else’s hand is making me soft, I’ll stop talking."

Quiet returned to the dining table, but Su Mu began to lose her appetite.

Fu Shinian had interrupted Su Mu’s words to prevent Ji Nanfeng from having any reason to continue talking to her, but Su Mu didn’t understand his intentions. In her view, he was just angry about her having lunch with Wen Han at noon.

After Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng left, Fu Shinian went to the study and hadn’t come out by the time Su Mu began to feel sleepy. She thought it over, warmed up a cup of milk, and took it to the study, only to find him having already finished his work and resting with his eyes closed in the office chair.

This posture only confirmed Su Mu’s suspicion that he was angry, and she felt extremely regretful. If she had known she would meet Ji Nanfeng at lunch, she would have refused, however difficult it might have been. After all, the relationship between her and Fu Shinian was just beginning to improve, just starting to trend in the right direction.

She really didn’t want to squander all her previous efforts.

Gently placing the milk in front of Fu Shinian, Su Mu slowly said,

"If you’ve finished work, you should rest early. It’s cold at night, don’t catch a cold."

Fu Shinian slowly opened his eyes, and his gaze met Su Mu’s. He looked at her as if she were a complete stranger, and although there was no sign of anger in his eyes, there was also no warmth.

Su Mu was puzzled:

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Su Mu," Fu Shinian’s voice was so soft, it seemed as if it would dissipate in the wind, never to be found again. He said, "Why exactly do you want to marry me?"

Su Mu was stunned.

She had thought Fu Shinian would question her lunch with Wen Han, or would mock or criticize her without asking, or even give her the cold shoulder for a few days. But she never imagined Fu Shinian would ask such a question, so unrelated to today’s events. For a moment, Su Mu couldn’t understand what he really wanted to know.

The silence lasted a little too long, Su Mu regained her senses and looked at Fu Shinian:

"I want to marry you because I..."

"Forget it," Fu Shinian stood up from his desk, turned off his computer, and with it, the Weibo page that had been open disappeared as well. "I don’t want to know anymore."

Fu Shinian walked towards the door, pausing as if he had thought of something:

"You don’t need to explain anything about Wen Han to me. I don’t want to know why you were together, nor what happened. But if you ever do something that crosses the line, don’t wait for me to act. Leave early, otherwise, you won’t want to know what methods I will use to deal with you."

The door opened, then closed with a loud bang, and Su Mu stood in place without moving. The courage she had just mustered deflated like a balloon, wilted and lifeless.

What she really wanted to say was: I want to marry you, just because I like you.

But he didn’t want to listen.

And even if he listened, he might not believe her.
