Chapter 656: Chapter 656: Willing To Do Anything
When Fu Shinian returned to the living room, Su Mu was no longer on the first floor. He didn’t go upstairs immediately, but instead headed for the elderly lady’s room. It was as though she had anticipated his visit; when she saw him enter, she wasn’t surprised at all. Her gentle smile infected Fu Shinian, making him grin as well.
Some things were best left unspoken. At this moment, Fu Shinian didn’t want to overthink and complicate the final days. He believed this wasn’t the kind of scenario the elderly lady wanted to see either. So, why not spend these days happily? To make both himself and her unburdened, joyful, and carefree.
"Sit."
Sitting by her bedside, Fu Shinian picked up the family portrait from the nightstand and smiled faintly. It was taken just days before Qiqi’s disappearance. Qiqi had suddenly decided they should have a family photo session, so Su Shiyue had made an effort to come back. At the time, she had just gone through an emotional storm involving Yu Qingzhou and wasn’t in the best spirits, but none of that was evident in the photo.
Su Shiyue valued this family deeply. It was clear from the photo.
The elderly lady looked at Fu Shinian and smiled slightly:
"I thought I wouldn’t see you again before I leave."
Fu Shinian set down the photo and gazed at her:
"Grandma, I didn’t want you to leave with regrets. That’s why I fought with all my strength and woke up as quickly as I could—without surgery. I even brought your beloved granddaughter back. Are you happy now?"
"Happy, very happy," she replied, gripping his hand tightly. "I believe in you, and I believed Qiqi would come back safely, but such things must never happen again. Qiqi couldn’t handle it, and neither could you or Su Mu endure it. You must be more cautious in the future."
"I understand, Grandma." Fu Shinian’s expression turned serious. "I will never let something like this happen again. The harm Qiqi endured this time is enough to torment me for the rest of my life. I won’t let it happen ever again—not even a speck of it."
"I trust you. But I see Qiqi has changed a lot. She used to be such a lively and cheerful child, but now she only responds after being prompted. I know recovery takes time, but it pains me to witness this. Psychological counseling is important, but your and Su Mu’s companionship is equally, if not more, important. Do you understand?"
"Rest assured, Grandma. We’ll do our utmost to make Qiqi happy again."
"Don’t rush. We often assume children don’t understand anything, but these days, kids are far from naive. They have some vague grasp of everything. You naturally want what’s best for Qiqi, but her current state simply cannot handle any more pressure. Take it slow. I fear I won’t be able to see her full recovery, but I believe Qiqi will find joy again someday."
"Grandma..."
"Don’t be sentimental in front of me. Haven’t you experienced enough life and death separations yet? Is there anything you can’t let go of? Now you have a wife, a child, and a happy, complete family. Even if I leave, I will have peace knowing you are taking good care of Qiqi and Susu. That’s all I ask of you."
Fu Shinian gripped her hand tightly, refraining from saying anything further. He nodded solemnly.
The elderly lady nodded in satisfaction and suddenly recalled how Su Mu had come home early from the hospital. She gently tapped Fu Shinian’s hand and smiled: "I’m tired. I want to rest now. You should head upstairs and comfort your wife. Su Mu seems quite upset this time. Even though you just left the hospital, I don’t think she’s going to be giving you a warm welcome."
Fu Shinian chuckled helplessly:
"I was indeed wrong. She has every reason to be angry."
"At least you understand. Marriage is about unity, and excluding her from decisions like you did—she’s gracious enough to let you back into the house at all. Don’t push your luck."
"Understood." Fu Shinian rose from his chair. "Alright, Grandma, rest well. We’ll join you for breakfast tomorrow morning."
"Alright."
After bidding the elderly lady goodnight, Fu Shinian headed upstairs briskly. When he pushed open the master bedroom door, he felt a mix of disappointment and inevitability. The room was empty, the bed neatly made without any hint of having been used. He surmised that Su Mu must be in Qiqi’s room.
There wasn’t any urgency. He went to the dressing room, grabbed a fresh set of clothes, and headed to the bathroom. After washing up, he noticed the room was still empty. That’s when he decided to go to Qiqi’s room.
Concerned that Qiqi might be asleep, Fu Shinian hesitated at the door, listening for voices inside. Hearing two people talking, he knocked lightly before pushing the door open. Inside, Qiqi and Su Mu sat cross-legged on the carpet, reading a storybook. When Qiqi saw Fu Shinian enter, she looked up and smiled:
"Daddy."
Fu Shinian walked over and affectionately stroked her hair: "What story are you reading?"
"Pinocchio."
Fu Shinian responded, "...That’s a good one."
Seeing that Qiqi didn’t seem sleepy and Su Mu wasn’t planning on leaving, Fu Shinian joined them on the carpet. From the moment he entered the room, Su Mu hadn’t spared him a single glance. Feeling a little dejected, he shot a pleading look at Qiqi.
Though Qiqi wasn’t as talkative as before, her bond with Fu Shinian remained strong. She didn’t know exactly what had happened to upset Su Mu, but from her mother’s demeanor, it seemed serious. Nonetheless, Qiqi still wished for her parents to be happy and live harmoniously together. Smiling, she looked at Su Mu and said:
"Mommy, can I sleep with you and Daddy tonight?"
At this stage, Su Mu couldn’t refuse any of Qiqi’s requests. Although she was reluctant, she nodded: "Of course."
The psychologist had emphasized the importance of parental companionship for Qiqi during this period. Su Mu naturally wouldn’t let her quarrel with Fu Shinian negatively affect Qiqi. Their issues could be dealt with later.
After playing for a while longer, Fu Shinian picked up Qiqi and returned to the master bedroom. Su Mu followed behind them. Watching as Fu Shinian played with Qiqi, she finally headed to the bathroom. Half an hour later, she emerged to find Qiqi already asleep, nestled among the white bedding, her tiny figure soft and adorable. Even the hardest of hearts would melt.
Fu Shinian lay beside Qiqi, gently patting her back. Upon seeing Su Mu, he smiled faintly:
"Qiqi was feeling tired, so she fell asleep. Let me say goodnight to you on her behalf."
Su Mu’s smile deepened, and she stepped forward to softly kiss Qiqi’s forehead. "Goodnight, I love you."
"I love you too," Fu Shinian interjected.
Su Mu turned to stare at him, her expression incredulous. She hadn’t expected him to shamelessly chime in when her words were clearly directed at Qiqi. His audacity was infuriating. Su Mu curled her lips into a smile:
"Do you think saying those four words will get me to forgive you?"
Fu Shinian looked at her, silent for a moment before sighing softly. He carefully climbed out of bed, took her hand, and led her to the sofa by the floor-to-ceiling window. Su Mu didn’t resist—not because she wasn’t angry, but because she wasn’t planning to drag out their quarrel indefinitely. She also desired a harmonious family atmosphere.
If Fu Shinian showed genuine remorse, she would accept it and move on.
Sitting her down on the sofa, Fu Shinian didn’t take a seat himself. Instead, he crouched in front of her, his head tilted upwards while holding her hand tightly, gently rubbing it. He said:
"Susu, let’s talk."
Su Mu looked at him. "Go ahead."
"I was wrong." Fu Shinian was straightforward, offering no excuses or pretense as he admitted his mistakes. "I shouldn’t have manipulated the dates to deceive you. I shouldn’t have kept it a secret when I went to see Qin Nianwan alone. I shouldn’t have played the hero, thinking that saving Qiqi at the cost of my own life was a way to bring closure for you. I shouldn’t have placed myself in danger, nearly losing my life and disappearing for so long, worrying you. And I shouldn’t have been so lazy after returning, staying in bed for so long while you carried all the burden."
Su Mu hadn’t expected his apology to be so thorough and heartfelt, leaving her momentarily stunned and uncertain of how to respond.
Fu Shinian lowered his head and kissed the back of her hand:
"At the time, I didn’t think about it much. There were fleeting moments when I wondered how you’d react if you found out I had hidden everything from you, but in the chaos of the situation, I couldn’t consider everything fully. Faced with Qiqi’s life on one side and your feelings on the other, I had to choose Qiqi. I’m your husband, the person who should protect and cherish you for life. How could I stand by and watch you—a woman—put yourself in harm’s way? If I did, what kind of man would I be?"
Su Mu wanted to speak but ultimately remained silent. Fu Shinian could sense what she wanted to say, so he smiled faintly:
"This time was truly a brush with death. Qin Nianwan genuinely wanted me dead. As a man, I barely escaped with my life under those circumstances. If it had been you instead, I can’t even fathom the consequence. Susu, if you had saved Qiqi at the cost of your own life, how could I face Qiqi afterward? How would you expect Qiqi to face me? Wouldn’t outsiders tell her that during her hour of peril, her father hid behind her mother, who acted as a hero but tragically lost her life saving her?"
"Qiqi is an understanding child. But even the most understanding child would have to live with that reality. If that truly happened, even if Qiqi and I could peacefully coexist, I could never be her hero or role model. In her eyes, I’d remain a failure—a coward down to my very bones."
"I know I’m selfish. I want you to remember me forever—even if it’s through death. I want to be Qiqi’s hero no matter what, even if it meant deceiving you. And I’ve succeeded, haven’t I? Despite the dangers, I came back to you. And I promise, this will never happen again."
"Be angry. I know you’re angry, and rightfully so. If the roles were reversed, I wouldn’t be able to calmly listen to you like you’re listening to me now. But can we keep your anger brief? I miss you so much, Susu. I miss Qiqi. I miss us all being together without barriers or misunderstandings. And I want Grandma to spend her last days laughing without worry."
"I’ve made mistakes. I won’t justify them. Mistakes are mistakes. If you wish, you can punish me for the rest of my life, and I’d accept it without complaint. All I ask is for you, Grandma, and Qiqi to be happy. To have this outcome—truthfully, I feel so thankful. I never expected to have you all back in my life. It feels like the heavens are granting me a second chance to love and cherish all of you."
Fu Shinian seemed to have been holding back an avalanche of words, unloading everything at a stretch. But he wasn’t finished yet. As he prepared to continue, Su Mu quickly placed her hand over his lips: "Enough."
Fu Shinian blinked, leaned forward, and kissed her palm. Su Mu, displeased, withdrew her hand with a glare. Fu Shinian responded with a smile, sitting beside her and gently wrapping her in his arms:
"Do you forgive me?"
"No, I’m still angry."
"You can hit me, scold me, but please don’t let it affect your health. If you fall sick, my guilt will..."
"Stop," Su Mu interrupted his rambling, raising an elegant brow at him. "Have you been planning how to say all this while lying in the hospital? Why didn’t I realize you had such a side before?"
Fu Shinian smiled faintly:
"I was alone at the hospital, and you didn’t come to see me. Of course, all I could think about was how to make you forgive me once I came home. But everything I’ve said now is heartfelt and genuine. Honestly, I haven’t finished yet. If you’re still upset, I can keep talking until you’re satisfied."
This shameless side of Fu Shinian was new to Su Mu. Almost against her will, her anger began dissipating as she couldn’t hold back a smile. Fu Shinian saw this, pulled her firmly into his embrace, and solemnly kissed her forehead:
"Susu, I’m sorry!"
All of his previous words had tugged at Su Mu’s heartstrings, but it seemed that these three simple words carried more weight than anything else. In that moment, she felt deeply moved.
Who was she to complain? Fu Shinian’s ordeal—the disappearance, the coma—was all for her sake. Hadn’t they made a pact before? As long as he came back, she promised to forgive everything, never hold grudges, and live harmoniously with him.
Now, heaven had granted her another chance to embrace him in his entirety, standing before her, speaking tenderly. What more could she ask for?
She truly couldn’t afford to be greedy, lest the heavens punish her further.
With a faint smile, she returned his embrace and softly said:
"Shinian, I’m not truly mad at you. I’m just..."
"I know. I know everything," Fu Shinian interrupted her. "Susu, you must know—there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you."
