Chapter 655: Chapter 655: Home at Last
The next day, Fu Shinian waited eagerly all day, but never saw a glimpse of Su Mu. When he was with Qiqi, his demeanor seemed unchanged, still patient and smiling. But once Qiqi went out of sight, his aura was enough to make people instinctively back away.
Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng walked into the ward to find Fu Shinian like this. Qiao Yu didn’t have much of a reaction, but Ji Nanfeng couldn’t help but chuckle:
"Yo, what’s happened?"
Not wanting to see his good buddy suffer too much, Qiao Yu spoke up: "Watch it, don’t bring trouble to yourself."
"I can’t help it, he’s just woken up, lying there for so long, his muscles haven’t fully recovered. Even if I’m out of line, and he jumps out of bed to punch me, he can’t catch up to me anyway."
Fu Shinian snorted coldly at this:
"You can keep messing around, I’ll recover eventually."
"Strong or not, stop talking about the future, live in the moment," Ji Nanfeng continued teasingly. "What? Maybe Su Mu left yesterday because she was too tired and needed a break, but it’s this late today and she’s still not here, haven’t you thought about why?"
Fu Shinian coldly stared at him, saying nothing.
"After we got back from the hospital yesterday, Xiaobei called Su Mu. She didn’t answer your calls, but she picked up Xiaobei’s immediately."
This made Fu Shinian look a bit better, but his tone was still off:
"What did they say?"
"Want to know?"
Fu Shinian had never felt this grumpy, he smirked slightly: "I heard from Qiao Yu that Jiang Bei hasn’t fully decided not to divorce yet? Want me to add fuel to the fire and end your good days? With a son about to be born, a divorce now might be just right, hmm?"
Ji Nanfeng, knowing Jiang Bei was his Achilles’ heel, grimaced helplessly at Fu Shinian before reluctantly speaking:
"Actually, nothing major. But I heard Xiaobei asked Su Mu if she’s still angry, and Su Mu didn’t deny it."
"Angry?" Fu Shinian frowned slightly: "At me?"
"Who else? Could it be me? Su Mu’s nice to everyone else, but only doesn’t visit you, doesn’t take your calls, what do you think?" Ji Nanfeng looked at Fu Shinian: "Su Mu visited my house to see Xiaobei today, she seemed in good spirits, rejuvenated. I probed her a bit, but after learning you’re fine, she won’t even mention your name."
Fu Shinian started to feel depressed. He ran through everything that happened since he woke up, realizing he only said one thing in a bad tone. When did Su Mu become so petty? And didn’t he immediately apologize after?
Qiao Yu, sitting quietly all this time, saw Fu Shinian’s confused expression and reminded him:
"Stop thinking only about after you woke up, also consider what happened before you went missing?"
With Qiao Yu’s reminder, Fu Shinian realized almost immediately the crux of the matter, Su Mu was mad because he lied to her and met Qin Nianwan alone. All his irritation vanished at once, he smiled helplessly, and Ji Nanfeng, realizing too, laughed:
"A long road ahead, take your time walking it."
"It’s my fault," Fu Shinian admitted. "But if given another chance, I’d choose the same."
"Yes, your choice wasn’t wrong. But as the one left behind, Su Mu surely had it no easier than you. Su Mu doesn’t want to be the last to know everything. She’s your closest person, meant to share everything with you. I think if you had told her everything, she might not have disagreed. But going your own way like that, of course she’d be angry."
Every word Qiao Yu said was correct. Fu Shinian had no objections, understanding that he’d also be mad if the roles reversed. He understood and empathized but didn’t want to be without Su Mu for too long.
Looking over at Qiao Yu, Fu Shinian asked eagerly:
"When can I leave the hospital?"
Qiao Yu raised an eyebrow slightly:
"Your exams are clear, but after lying for so long, a bit of recovery is needed, at most a week, and you can go home, just in time to spend the new year with the old lady."
Fu Shinian nodded:
"I know."
A whole week went by, from Fu Shinian realizing why Su Mu was angry, to his active check-ups, to being discharged and going home. Su Mu never showed up, yet Fu Shinian called her every day, though she never answered, and texted, though she never replied.
When Fu Shinian returned to Gui Ning Residence after being discharged, it was almost noon. Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng accompanied him. Su Mu was in the old lady’s room chatting when she heard the commotion outside, guessing it was Fu Shinian and Qiqi returning. Though she hadn’t gone to the hospital, she kept updated about their situation.
The old lady heard the noise too and smiled softly:
"You’ve avoided this for a week, no dodging it now."
Su Mu smiled as well:
"Grandma, I never planned to avoid him forever. I’m still waiting for his apology. It’s just a week’s lesson for him."
"I know, you’re doing well. Sometimes he just needs a lesson, don’t always indulge him."
Su Mu chuckled but stayed silent as the door was knocked, then opened to Fu Shinian’s voice: "Old lady."
Although the old lady had always said she wasn’t in a rush, and didn’t show concern outwardly for Fu Shinian lying in the hospital, deep down she was. Upon seeing him, her eyes reddened, gaze glued to him.
As Fu Shinian stepped in, Su Mu quietly stood up from her chair, yielding the closest seat. Fu Shinian glanced at her, smiled slightly, and sat where Su Mu had been, holding the old lady’s hand and talking to her. Su Mu didn’t linger in the room; she wanted to check on Qiqi.
A week spent sulking with Fu Shinian led to neglecting Qiqi, something she knew she shouldn’t have and regretted, especially upon seeing Qiqi’s smiling face. Qiqi was in Ji Nanfeng’s arms chatting, smiling brightly; if not looking closely, you wouldn’t notice any change from before she went missing. But Su Mu knew the mischievous Qiqi wouldn’t be back.
She still wasn’t very talkative.
Su Mu walked over, taking Qiqi from Ji Nanfeng, kissing her cheek affectionately:
"Did you miss mommy?"
Qiqi nodded, looking a bit hesitant, unsure whether to ask. Su Mu smiled softly: "What does Qiqi want to ask?"
"Why didn’t mommy go to the hospital these days?"
No matter the change, Qiqi’s sensitive nature remained. Su Mu paused, then chose to tell the truth: "Don’t worry, Qiqi, I didn’t visit because I was angry with something your dad did. I don’t want to forgive him so quickly; he needs a lesson."
Qiqi seemed to understand, yet not, blinking after a few seconds:
"Will mommy be with daddy forever?"
This time, Su Mu replied almost without hesitation: "Of course, not just with daddy, but with you too, forever together."
This time, Qiqi understood, as she immediately smiled at Su Mu’s words, a smile like tasting sweet candy, making Su Mu feel instantly filled with sweetness.
Qiqi had been missing so long, and spent a considerable time in treatment at the hospital. The old lady never rushed, but Su Mu knew she missed the child dearly. Now, she didn’t hesitate and directed Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng to bring the child in. Qiao Yu raised an eyebrow at this:
"Why aren’t you going in? Shinian’s back, can’t dodge it tonight?"
"I never planned to dodge." Su Mu said: "There’s soup simmering in the kitchen for the old lady, I need to check it."
Whether true or not, no one delved into it, knowing this tiff was temporary. Now that Fu Shinian was back, and had caught Su Mu, would he let her stay mad? Not a chance~!
Su Mu truly had soup to stew, though with Auntie Lin and the chef, she wasn’t needed. However, she didn’t yet want to enter the heartwarming room, fearing it’d make her even sadder, knowing the doctor’s prognosis for the old lady worsened with each checkup, saying she might not last beyond the Lantern Festival.
The reunion was so recent...
As Su Mu was lost in thought by the kitchen, she didn’t notice when Fu Shinian entered until arms wrapped around her waist. Startled, she spoke icily:
"Let go."
"No," Fu Shinian said in a rare act of coaxing. "I’ve only seen you once since I woke, you never visited at the hospital, and now I’ve finally got a hold of you. You won’t even let me hug you properly?"
Su Mu snorted, grabbing a knife from the counter. Fu Shinian reflexively released her, incredulously asking:
"Really? Murdering your husband?"
Su Mu turned, giving him a slight smile: "No, you just woke up, why kill you now? Cherish life, both yours and mine."
Su Mu’s cryptic comment left Fu Shinian unsure, but with the knife still in Su Mu’s hand, he dared not get closer. Pursing his lips, he spoke:
"Susu, if it’s about me meeting Qin Nianwan before..."
"I don’t want to discuss it now." Su Mu squinted at Fu Shinian: "Let’s celebrate your discharge tonight. As for other matters, we can handle it privately later. In front of Qiao Yu, Ji Nanfeng, and especially Qiqi, let’s remain calm."
Fu Shinian had a bad feeling, but he couldn’t disagree, so he nodded:
"Okay, I’ll follow your lead."
During dinner, the old lady, rare as it was, walked out of her room. With Qiao Yu and Fu Shinian supporting her on each side, she was steadily led to the dining room, genuinely happy. Although always at home, she hadn’t left her room in a while, now smiling in the living room.
Qiqi still didn’t speak much, relying on the old lady just as before. The old lady had Qiqi sit next to her, telling Su Mu:
"Let Qiqi spend more time with me these days."
Su Mu agreed: "Only worry I’ll tire you out."
"Not for much longer," the old lady gently stroked Qiqi’s hair: "My little sweetheart has suffered enough."
The meal was jovial; though lacking Qiqi’s usual laughter, Ji Nanfeng ensured the atmosphere never cooled. Shortly after dinner, Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu bid farewell, considering the old lady’s health. As Fu Shinian saw them off, Ji Nanfeng sympathetically remarked:
"Tonight, you’re in for it."
Fu Shinian gave him a cold look:
"I’ll deal with our matters once I’m done."
"As if I’ll be scared of you?" Ji Nanfeng chuckled. "But about women, if soothing with words fails, try the physical approach. Toss her on the bed, and a bit of harmony, and all their anger’s gone. Just my two cents, give it a go."
Fu Shinian raised an eyebrow:
"Oh? And this is how you sooth Jiang Bei too?"
With Fu Shinian’s question, Ji Nanfeng’s smile froze instantly. Truth was, from knowing Jiang Bei to marrying her and to soon becoming a father, he’s been so clumsy. Only recently have things improved slightly. Not that Jiang Bei can’t be bothered to quarrel, even if they did, she’d never give him such a chance.
Clearly, Ji Nanfeng’s experiences were earned elsewhere.
Fu Shinian, without needing an answer from Ji Nanfeng, had already deduced from his expression, smiling slightly:
"So it’s not with Jiang Bei, what a pity."
"You..."
Ji Nanfeng, wanting to retort, was stopped by a pat from Qiao Yu: "Stop provoking Shinian for no reason. Knowing how sneaky he can be, yet you willingly walk into trouble; just walk away now. Do you really want him going to tell Jiang Bei?"
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
"Let’s go."
Qiao Yu led the way, and Ji Nanfeng stared daggers at Fu Shinian, gritting his teeth. But in the end, he said nothing menacing, only a warning: "Don’t badmouth me to Jiang Bei."
Fu Shinian snorted disdainfully: As if I’d bother!
