Chapter 647: Chapter 647: Just Like This, It’s Good

After arriving at Shen City Hospital, Qiao Yu rushed to arrange a series of examinations for Fu Shinian. Su Mu stayed close, not leaving for a moment. During this time, Jiang Bei came to visit, and couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Perhaps everyone is like this; only after seeing someone with their own eyes can they believe that the person has truly returned.

Previously, when worried about Fu Shinian, Jiang Bei didn’t feel much. But now, after calming down, she realized her position was somewhat awkward. Because Fu Shinian’s examination results were not yet out, neither Rong Shen nor Ji Nanfeng had left, and Jiang Bei happened to stand right between them, with Ji Nanfeng on the left and Rong Shen on the right.

She didn’t particularly want to escape. After all, this wasn’t the first time. But having Jiang Bei speak with them felt impossible to do. She sighed inwardly, suddenly finding it quite laughable. After all, from the start, she wanted to be a clean and neat, carefree career woman in every aspect. But things did not go as planned, and she ended up living in such a manner.

Just as she was about to leave, Rong Shen spoke first:

"Xiaobei."

Jiang Bei stopped in her tracks. Ji Nanfeng was standing beside her, and she could even sense Ji Nanfeng’s gaze pausing on her because of Rong Shen’s use of that name. She didn’t look over, so she couldn’t discern what kind of emotions this gaze contained.

She thought about ignoring it, but in the end, she still acknowledged it and turned to look at Rong Shen:

"Is there something?"

"There’s something I want to say to you. Is it convenient?"

This seemed to be the first time Rong Shen had been so polite to her. In the past, when they were together, whatever she thought or wanted to do, he didn’t care and made decisions directly, at most merely notifying her. It was unprecedented for him to seek her opinion like this.

But Jiang Bei did not immediately agree just because of Rong Shen’s change this time. She looked at Ji Nanfeng, who was likely surprised Jiang Bei would look at him at this moment, slightly stunned. A few seconds later, he seemed to realize Jiang Bei appeared to be seeking his opinion.

It was a feeling he couldn’t quite explain. Though they had been married for a long time and had clearly laid out the terms before marriage that they wouldn’t interfere in each other’s lives, Jiang Bei never told him what she wanted to do, nor did he ever ask her about her choices. They seemed like strangers acting out a play, with only the occasional wild passion in bed.

Jiang Bei’s response made Ji Nanfeng a bit emotional. Vaguely, he seemed to understand why Jiang Bei was doing this, but it was too incredible to be certain. Rationality told him that this was the time to speak with some grace and give Jiang Bei a generous "Go ahead," but emotionally, he really didn’t want to do that. Although his relationship with Jiang Bei was also nearly twisted, she was still his wife, right?

Seeing Jiang Bei’s current state, it seemed as though if he just said don’t go, she would agree. So... should he try it?

After all, he really didn’t want Jiang Bei to have any more involvement with Rong Shen, even though he had previously prepared to let go.

But the words reached his mouth, and instead turned into:

"You go ahead, I’ll wait for you here."

Jiang Bei’s gaze showed some surprise, but before Ji Nanfeng could get a clear look, she withdrew her gaze, took a step forward, and left. Rong Shen glanced at Ji Nanfeng, and even nodded at him politely before slowly following Jiang Bei’s steps. Watching the two of them one after the other, Ji Nanfeng felt like a heavy stone was weighing on his heart.

But what could he do?

In the end, it was his decision. He had anticipated such an outcome, yet he went through with it anyway. Perhaps he hadn’t even realized that there was a self-destructive component in his subconsciousness.

Jiang Bei and Rong Shen hadn’t walked far. Rong Shen wasn’t planning on going far. After all, the weather was bad, Jiang Bei was pregnant, and she certainly hadn’t rested well these past few days. Rong Shen didn’t want her to be too tired.

By the time Rong Shen realized he had this thought, he and Jiang Bei were already sitting in the hospital’s convenience store by the window, facing each other. He had ordered a cup of hot milk for Jiang Bei, who was now holding it, looking down with lowered eyes, lost in thought.

If, from the beginning, instead of relentlessly pushing Jiang Bei, he had cared for her feelings as he did now, considered her perspective, and tried to understand her, perhaps she wouldn’t have wanted to leave. Perhaps the rightful place beside her wouldn’t be Ji Nanfeng, but himself.

But that’s the fucked-up world for you, full of "ifs."

Rong Shen sighed inwardly and spoke:

"When is the expected due date?"

Jiang Bei looked up at him: "One more month."

"Boy or girl?"

"Boy."

Rong Shen smiled: "That’s nice. From now on, there will be two men to protect you."

Jiang Bei didn’t know how to respond to that, so she remained silent. Rong Shen looked at her, leaned back against the chair, and stared at the bustling crowd outside the window for nearly five minutes before he chuckled self-deprecatingly:

"I’ve clearly made up my mind, but now I still can’t say it. Jiang Bei, do you believe I truly like you?"

Jiang Bei showed no particular reaction, lightly sipped the hot milk:

"I don’t know."

"You don’t believe me."

"I’m not you, so I don’t know what you’re thinking. I’ve never seen anyone like you in terms of how you love, so I’m not sure. Maybe you do love me, but maybe the purpose of my existence for you is to teach you how to love someone properly."

Rong Shen turned to look at Jiang Bei:

"You already know what I’m about to say."

"You should have said these things to me a long time ago." Jiang Bei met Rong Shen’s gaze: "Back when you let me go, watched me marry Ji Nanfeng, I thought that was the end. Didn’t expect you’d come back and suggest I return. Rong Shen, although many things have happened between us, we ultimately lived together for two years. We understand each other; you’re not someone who looks back."

"I wouldn’t look back, but I really did for you. So you still don’t believe I like you?"

"Even if I believe that, what would change?" Jiang Bei slowly smiled: "I’m already married, I have a child now. It’s too late; there’s no going back."

"Do you love Ji Nanfeng?"

"No, just like I didn’t love you when we were together. But whether it was being with you or choosing Ji Nanfeng, neither of you ever left me any room for choice. I was once determined to make my life spectacular, but it ended up a tangled mess. I once wanted to grow old with one person, but ended up with two men in a confusing situation. So one really shouldn’t set up personas for themselves. Otherwise, in the end, you won’t even know how badly you’ve been slapped by reality."

Rong Shen slowly smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. After a moment of silence, he spoke:

"I’m sorry."

Just after Rong Shen’s unusual actions, Jiang Bei thought that no matter what he said next, she wouldn’t be surprised. But these three words shocked her as much as if a ghost had suddenly appeared before her, leaving her momentarily dazed. Rong Shen looked at her expression and smiled slightly:

"What? Seeing such a shocked expression, you think my dictionary doesn’t have these three words?"

"You really don’t seem like someone who would say these three words."

"I don’t say them often, but that doesn’t mean I won’t."

Jiang Bei slowly smiled, and as she calmed down, she seemed to understand why Rong Shen was apologizing. Some things don’t need to be stated clearly; it’s enough for both to understand. Jiang Bei exhaled:

"If this conversation had happened seven months ago, I don’t think I would have forgiven you. You turned my world upside down, completely changed it, and it would have been good enough if I didn’t kill you, let alone forgive you. But now I find that none of that matters anymore. Even if I don’t forgive you, even if I kill you, the things that happened can’t be undone. So I want to forgive you and let go of the past; we shouldn’t keep living in it."

Rong Shen’s gaze fell on Jiang Bei’s round belly:

"Is it because of this child?"

"Yes, I never thought I liked children much before. But as he stayed in my belly longer, my fondness grew. I can’t help but love my own child."

Rong Shen shouldn’t have other thoughts, but at this moment, he couldn’t help but imagine if during those two years together, he had done everything to make Jiang Bei pregnant with his child, she might have accepted it. She might not have thought about leaving, and all those subsequent events wouldn’t have happened.

They may have initially been awkward, but eventually would have compromised for the family’s sake, gradually accepting everything because of their child. Just thinking of such a scenario gave Rong Shen a pleasantly beautiful feeling, but now all he could do was imagine. He once possessed Jiang Bei, but indeed he had now truly missed out, and could never regain what he had.

"I heard you planned to get a divorce before. What about now? You probably don’t think that way anymore, do you?"

"Are you hoping I will divorce?"

"If I said yes, would you think that everything I said before was fake?"

Jiang Bei nodded:

"I would."

"I really don’t think Ji Nanfeng is suitable for you. Though I didn’t give you a choice before, Ji Nanfeng is your choice, so I wouldn’t give you any opinions. It’s your decision, but I hope you won’t wrong yourself, for the child in your belly."

"I know."

Rong Shen nodded lightly, not saying anything further. In fact, there wasn’t much left for him to say to Jiang Bei. What he wanted to express, given their current relationship, felt rather inappropriate, so he could only suppress it in his heart. When he inadvertently glanced out the window, he noticed Ji Nanfeng standing not too far away under a tree, watching this place.

Strangely, Rong Shen suddenly didn’t worry so much about Jiang Bei’s future life. Although Ji Nanfeng didn’t look like a good person, his feelings for Jiang Bei seemed genuine. Despite the recent scandal that had made headlines, who can ensure it wasn’t a small tactic by that guy to draw more attention?

"It seems that even with you going out with me, Ji Nanfeng isn’t at ease."

Rong Shen’s words made Jiang Bei momentarily bewildered. Once she realized, she turned to look out the window, and unexpectedly saw the gentle snowfall outside, with Ji Nanfeng standing under a tree not far away, watching. The distance was too great for Jiang Bei to see Ji Nanfeng’s expression clearly, but his unwavering stance heightened the solemnity.

As the ground became covered in snow, Jiang Bei stood up:

"There should be news about Fu Shinian by now. Let’s go back."

"You go ahead. I want to sit here for a while."

Jiang Bei glanced at Rong Shen. He met her gaze, not saying anything, only a faint smile at his lips. Jiang Bei responded with a smile: "Then I’ll go first."

Rong Shen nodded, and Jiang Bei began to walk away without looking back. But Rong Shen saw Jiang Bei stepping out of the convenience store, and Ji Nanfeng had already started striding towards her. That concerning demeanor clearly showed how much he cared for the person in front of him.

Perhaps they weren’t in love with each other yet, but over time, especially with their shared child, even if there wasn’t love, there would be an inseparable bond. Moreover, because of Qiqi and Fu Shinian’s affair, Jiang Bei appeared to have completely abandoned any thoughts of divorce.

If that’s the case, then they should live well.

As for himself, since fate hadn’t allowed him to meet Jiang Bei at the best time, apart from letting her go for a peaceful life, there truly seemed nothing he could do for her.

Ji Nanfeng walked up to Jiang Bei, one hand holding her arm and the other supporting her waist:

"It’s snowing, the road is slippery, walk slowly."

Given their current relationship, it wouldn’t be strange for Jiang Bei to reject Ji Nanfeng’s touch. Ji Nanfeng prepared himself to be refused and even thought about how to persuade her. But Jiang Bei didn’t refuse him, nor did she show any displeasure, which made Ji Nanfeng look at her several times.

Jiang Bei sensed Ji Nanfeng’s gaze, and after a few times, couldn’t help but smile:

"Do you find it unusual that I’m not angry, or do you want to ask what Rong Shen and I talked about?"

"Huh?" Perhaps not expecting Jiang Bei to initiate conversation, Ji Nanfeng was somewhat taken aback. Though they had spoken often on the phone in recent days, it was all about Fu Shinian and Qiqi, and nothing of their own matters had been mentioned. To Ji Nanfeng, it felt like they hadn’t really communicated. But now Jiang Bei spoke up, discussing something between them, which made it hard for Ji Nanfeng not to feel surprised.

"No." Ji Nanfeng was a bit awkward: "I just think... it’s nice, like this."
