Chapter 646: Wei Shaoqin, Thank You

Chapter 646: Chapter 646: Wei Shaoqin, Thank You

Two hours later, the car pulled into the parking lot of Nanyue County People’s Hospital. Though this place couldn’t compare to the bustling Shen City, it was still thrumming with activity. Su Mu couldn’t wait for the car to fully stop before jumping out, paying no attention to the crowd around her. She came so close to colliding with an electric scooter behind her, but luckily Rong Shen had already stepped out and swiftly pulled her back.

The rider cursed under his breath, but Rong Shen shot him a glare that silenced him before he pedaled away. Su Mu didn’t seem the least bit startled. She even forgot to say "thank you" to Rong Shen and hurried towards the inpatient department. Qiao Yu and Rong Shen exchanged a glance before following behind.

Wei Shaoqin must have calculated the timing. Just as he stepped out of the elevator to welcome everyone, he saw Su Mu rushing toward him. He called out:

"Su Mu."

At the sound of his voice, Su Mu looked up and ran over, clutching his arm.

"Where is he? Where?"

Wei Shaoqin gave a faint smile.

"Don’t worry, he’s alive. Although he’s still in a coma and hasn’t woken up, the doctor said there shouldn’t be any major problems. I’ve already made arrangements with the hospital here to transfer him back to Shen City shortly. The medical care there will be better."

All the way here, Su Mu had been restless, her mind racing uncontrollably with countless possibilities: what if Fu Shinian was severely injured, what if he still wasn’t out of danger, what if he could no longer recognize her like Qiqi... what if his appearance had been completely destroyed? What then? She had no answers for these questions. Yet, in hearing Wei Shaoqin’s words, the weight pressing on her chest finally began to lift.

Over the past four days, she had held on with all her strength but had also prepared herself for the possibility that Fu Shinian might never return. What that preparation entailed, she didn’t know. Even now, she wasn’t certain how she would react. But she had genuinely considered the worst-case scenario—more than once.

And now, in this moment, both Qiqi and Fu Shinian were back in her life again. All that filled her heart was gratitude, and nothing else seemed to matter.

When Su Mu smiled, Qiao Yu, the approaching Rong Shen, and Ji Nanfeng all felt a weight lift off their shoulders. They had each witnessed Su Mu’s state over the past few days. If Fu Shinian hadn’t returned, it was likely this family would have completely fallen apart, even with Qiqi’s return unable to save it.

Now, though the road had been fraught with hardship and pain, the ending was a good one.

And perhaps the less-than-perfect journey itself could be seen as a form of growth.

Wei Shaoqin led the group upstairs. In the elevator, he shared details of how he had searched along the downstream areas for a long time with no sign of Fu Shinian, nearly abandoning hope. Given the amount of time passed, even if Fu Shinian were found, the odds of survival seemed slim. But one day, he gazed at passing boats on the water and suddenly thought, "If I’m searching for Fu Shinian, maybe someone else has already seen him." That insight spurred him on to comb downstream counties and townships. Two days after starting, Wei Shaoqin received a phone call and rushed over immediately.

Ji Nanfeng quickly focused on the key point in Wei Shaoqin’s tale:

"From what you’re saying, the person who called is someone we know?"

"Yes, you know him."

"Who is it?"

Wei Shaoqin smiled faintly and replied, "Yu Qingzhou."

"Yu Qingzhou? What’s he doing here?"

"After leaving Shen City, Yu Qingzhou has been living as a backpacker, chasing his dream of traveling across the country. He happened to injure his foot while passing through this area and, by luck or fate, encountered Fu Shinian. Seeing Fu Shinian alone and staying in a shared ward, he figured something must’ve gone wrong and gave me a call."

"Honestly, even if it weren’t for him, we would have found Fu Shinian eventually. But he truly helped expedite the process. Is he still at the hospital? Perhaps we can visit him later and take him back to Shen City with us."

Wei Shaoqin shook his head.

"He’s already gone."

"Why? Didn’t you say he injured his foot?"

Wei Shaoqin smiled but said nothing, clearly unwilling or unable to elaborate. Ji Nanfeng didn’t press further. At this moment, nothing mattered more than Fu Shinian. Any additional thanks to others could come later; they would be remembered and repaid at the right time.

When Fu Shinian arrived at the hospital, he was unconscious and had no identification on him. After treatment, the hospital assigned him to a shared ward with minimal conditions. It wasn’t until Wei Shaoqin arrived and pulled some strings that they managed to move him to a private room. Otherwise, with so many people gathered now, the earlier ward might have been overcrowded.

As Su Mu pushed open the door to the hospital room, she finally realized this was no dream. Seeing the weak figure on the bed, she knew that Fu Shinian hadn’t left her after all. He had merely disappeared for a time but had now returned to her side.

She thought she might cry, as she did upon seeing Qiqi. But instead, she felt calm—so calm that she didn’t even quicken her steps. She walked steadily over to the bedside, stood there quietly for a few minutes, and then bent down to gently stroke his hair.

His face bore numerous small wounds, and the one on his forehead seemed severe, covered in a thick layer of bandages that still showed traces of fresh blood seeping through. His exposed arms were wrapped in layers of gauze, his hands showing signs of burns. These injuries alone seemed devastating—a grim reminder of the unseen trauma hidden beneath the blanket.

Perhaps sensing her thoughts, Wei Shaoqin smiled lightly.

"Don’t worry. These are all superficial injuries. While some scars may remain, compared to the endings we feared, this is already a good outcome."

Su Mu took his words to heart and nodded.

"I understand. Thank you."

After everything, everyone had tried their best to search. Yet Wei Shaoqin was the one person Su Mu hadn’t expected to go to such lengths. His relationship with Fu Shinian might not have been terrible, but it wasn’t particularly close either. Nonetheless, he had nearly worn himself out searching, even sacrificing sleep. It was clear that his efforts weren’t simply driven by his bond with Fu Shinian, but by his worry for Su Mu. If anything happened to Fu Shinian, Su Mu might very well fall apart.

Fu Shinian wasn’t directly saved by Wei Shaoqin; he was found by others at the hospital in the small county. In some sense, it was inevitable that someone would discover him eventually. Even if he hadn’t been found by them, he could’ve awakened afterward and contacted everyone himself, finding his way back to Shen City. However, thanks to Wei Shaoqin’s determination, Su Mu was spared the agony of waiting for days, weeks, or even longer. That shortened gap of time was as precious to Su Mu as rain after a long drought—a balm for her pain, her cure.

At this moment, Su Mu noticed Wei Shaoqin had lost weight over the past few days. His chin carried a noticeable layer of stubble, an unusual state given how particular he usually was about his appearance. For someone like Wei Shaoqin, being unkempt was almost unthinkable, yet he had put his pride aside entirely for Su Mu. All his energy had been spent trying to bring back the person she adored, just to catch a fleeting glimpse of her smile like the one she wore now.

And to Wei Shaoqin, it was all worth it.

"You look exhausted. Go get some rest," she said.

Wei Shaoqin shook his head.

"We’re heading back to Shen City soon. I’ll rest when we get home."

Su Mu wanted to say more but ultimately held back, simply nodding lightly before sitting down in the chair beside the bed. She stayed there quietly, not speaking again.

After four restless days, her heart had finally found its place.

Never had she felt such peace and assurance. Nothing seemed to matter anymore; as long as Qiqi and Fu Shinian were by her side, even death would not frighten her.

But such a thought felt ill-fitting. Death was not what they had endured so much for. All of it was for the hope of living—living joyfully, united.

Qiao Yu, still uneasy, decided to personally check on Fu Shinian. After days of heightened anxiety, he was unwilling to fully trust anything short of his own inspection. He sought out the attending doctor and spent a long time asking questions. By the time he returned to the hospital room, the group was preparing to leave.

Ji Nanfeng quietly approached him and asked:

"How is he?"

"He’s alright. Of course, technically, he should have regained consciousness by the next day, but he hasn’t made any movement yet." Qiao Yu hesitated a moment and added, "When he gets to Shen City, we’ll run a complete checkup. I don’t think it’s anything serious, though."

Ji Nanfeng glanced at Su Mu and muttered under his breath:

"Let’s hope nothing goes wrong."

"Relax," Qiao Yu said, stealing another look at Su Mu. "Even if Fu Shinian never wakes up again—it wouldn’t matter. Su Mu would still feel complete. She’d take care of him for the rest of her life."

Ji Nanfeng shot him an incredulous look.

"That seems a little pessimistic, don’t you think?"

Qiao Yu chuckled but said nothing.

The group didn’t linger at the county hospital. Once the necessary procedures were completed, they prepared to leave. Fu Shinian still hadn’t woken up, and though no one openly voiced their concerns, each person harbored quiet doubts. Returning to Shen City for further tests was the safest and most reassuring decision for everyone.

Given the sleepless days Wei Shaoqin had undergone, the group worried about him driving back alone. Instead, they had him travel in the ambulance alongside Fu Shinian, and decided to arrange for his car to be picked up later. Wei Shaoqin didn’t disagree; his exhaustion was evident, and he complied without protest, riding the ambulance.

Throughout the journey, Su Mu remained beside Fu Shinian. If not for the faint rise and fall of her breath, Wei Shaoqin might have suspected she had transformed into a statue. He sat in the front passenger seat, occasionally glancing back at the two of them, then smiled quietly:

"He’s right here beside you now, lying there without the ability to leave. You don’t have to fear him disappearing anymore. You haven’t rested in days—close your eyes for a bit."

Over the past few days, Su Mu’s demeanor had undergone a stark change. Previously, anyone who tried to speak to her would be ignored, as though she couldn’t hear and had no intention of responding. But now, with Fu Shinian and Qiqi back, her condition had visibly improved. Though still apprehensive, her worry now carried a different flavor—lighter, far removed from the terror of not knowing whether they were alive or dead.

Listening to Wei Shaoqin’s suggestion, Su Mu raised her head and gave him a smile:

"I’ve been resting these past few days. It’s you who needs to recover—I’ve never seen you in such a sorry state. You should rest well."

"Is that so?" Wei Shaoqin rubbed his chin. "I just looked at myself in the hospital restroom mirror earlier. I think I don’t look bad at all. Even sulking, I’m still dashing."

"You are," Su Mu agreed sincerely, "very handsome."

Wei Shaoqin laughed and said no more. He turned his gaze forward, as if to prepare for some rest. Exhaustion had finally taken hold of him. The past few days of sleepless determination had been driven solely by his urge to keep Su Mu’s anguish at bay. Now that she had clearly turned a corner, Wei Shaoqin no longer felt any lingering burdens and let his eyes fall shut.

"Wei Shaoqin," Su Mu called softly, prompting him to reopen his eyes. This time, he didn’t turn around, as if anticipating what she was about to say. A faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Hmm?"

"Thank you."

"Don’t mention it."

Su Mu said nothing more, and Wei Shaoqin’s long-awaited sleep claimed him, leaving him deeply and soundly resting.

Su Mu, too, should have been drained, but until Fu Shinian fully recovered, her heart remained tethered, making true peace just out of reach. She clung tightly to his hand, finding only the slightest solace there. Midway through the ride, she decided to send Fu Shiyue a text message, letting her know that Fu Shinian had returned.

Though she hadn’t left Fu Shinian’s side for days, Su Mu was acutely aware of the state of affairs outside the hospital. Even without firsthand accounts, she could imagine what Gui Ning Residence must have been enduring. The grandmother’s health wasn’t good, and Fu Shinian’s inexplicable multiday absence would surely have raised alarm as an unusual and distressing matter.

The older woman was shrewd yet chose not to actively inquire, likely to avoid placing additional pressure on Su Mu. Now that Fu Shinian had returned, even if he remained unconscious, it was still better than an uncertain fate.

Within mere seconds of her message, Fu Shiyue’s call came through. Su Mu declined it, unwilling to disrupt Wei Shaoqin’s rest. However, she sent a photo of Fu Shinian to reassure her. This time, it took Fu Shiyue a long while to respond. Su Mu guessed that she was crying, consumed by anguish and guilt. Finally, Fu Shiyue replied:

"We’ll arrive at Shen City Hospital in about 45 minutes. You can come see him then."

A minute later, Fu Shiyue sent back a simple text. Just two words:

"Thank you."

Succinct yet weighty, those two words conveyed volumes that Su Mu understood perfectly. Gratitude for Qiqi’s safe return, for Fu Shinian’s survival, for fate’s eventual mercy toward their family.
