Chapter 640: Chapter 640: Regained after Loss

Qiao Yu glanced in the direction the director pointed, and although it was only two or three steps away, he still ran over as if, if he were a step slower, the little girl lying there would disappear.

But when he lifted the partition curtain, Qiao Yu still felt an inexplicable nervousness because he really wasn’t sure if the girl lying behind the curtain was indeed Qiqi, or just a child who looked a lot like her.

So much time has passed, and even though he’s not Qiqi’s biological father, it seems he can’t handle a new bout of disappointment.

If not...

If not, then at least he’s the only one who knows this news right now, and it’s not Fu Shinian and Su Mu standing here. If they were here, Qiao Yu wouldn’t even know how to console their disappointment.

Despite his chaotic thoughts, Qiao Yu still lifted the partition curtain without any hesitation.

To be honest, at first glance, Qiao Yu didn’t recognize whether the child lying there was indeed Qiqi. He hadn’t seen Qiqi for over a month and hadn’t seen those few photos Qin Nianwan sent to Su Mu’s phone, so his impression of Qiqi was still of that lively, chubby image.

But the child before him was so skinny that she was almost just skin and bones, her face dirty, hair messy, and her exposed skin covered in scars. He instantaneously denied that this was Qiqi.

It seemed only by denying that he could make Qiqi feel better, to believe that Qiqi was still fine, hadn’t suffered such hardships.

However, as Qiao Yu came closer and carefully looked at the girl whose breathing was so faint, he unerringly confirmed that she was indeed Qiqi.

Tears flowed almost instantly; he probably knew why he cried. He felt as if his heart was in such pain it convulsed. The child before him was just a child who was not yet four years old. No need to ask, just seeing these scars over her body told him what kind of suffering she endured over the past month.

Such an experience placed on an adult might not even be bearable, let alone a child.

Qiao Yu couldn’t even begin to imagine if it were Su Mu or Fu Shinian standing here, seeing their child turned into such a state, how would they feel.

The director walked over and gently patted Qiao Yu on the shoulder:

"Judging by your expression, she must be Mr. Fu’s daughter."

"Yes." Qiao Yu nodded, wiping his face: "How is this child?"

"The situation isn’t very optimistic. She has a head injury, from the look of the wound it seems to be several days old, and hasn’t received treatment thus far. Fortunately, it’s winter now, so it hasn’t become inflamed, but the wound is somewhat ulcerated, compounded by the unsanitary environment causing some infections. She has a high fever that has not subsided, and with those injuries on her body, it’s difficult for us to make a definitive prognosis."

Qiao Yu frowned. As a doctor, he knew how serious these combined circumstances could be, but now all they could do was their best; there was no other way. He nodded heavily:

"I understand. Thank you. This child is Mr. Fu’s only child, dearly beloved. She went missing earlier, and now that she’s finally returned, by whatever means necessary, we must keep her alive, otherwise, they might not be able to handle this new blow."

The director naturally understood this reasoning and nodded:

"We will do our utmost."

The current situation with Qiqi, though a devastating blow for Su Mu and Fu Shinian, is certainly better than never receiving any news at all. Qiao Yu departed from the emergency department, trying to find something to say, but after thinking it over, felt it’s better not to bluntly speak out his thoughts.

He stood by the emergency department’s entrance and took out his phone to call Fu Shinian, only to be unexpectedly met with a powered-off status.

Qiao Yu slightly furrowed his brow, feeling inexplicably uneasy.

He and Fu Shinian were childhood friends, naturally knowing all his habits. Not to mention now Qiqi’s whereabouts were unknown, even before this incident, Fu Shinian never turned off his phone unless something important occurred.

But now, what could be more important than finding Qiqi?

Qiao Yu thought about the meal Fu Shinian treated him and Ji Nanfeng to a while back. Though everyone understood Fu Shinian was planning to do something, he didn’t say, and being a man of restraint, coupled with his feelings for Su Mu, neither Ji Nanfeng nor himself believed Fu Shinian would do anything excessive, especially since he didn’t know Qiqi’s whereabouts.

So despite worrying, they hadn’t reached the point of following or monitoring him.

But now, Qiao Yu wasn’t so sure anymore.

Though it’s also possible he was overthinking, as sometimes a phone does malfunction and turn off, Qiao Yu brushed aside all the bad thoughts from his mind, refraining from calling Fu Shinian again, instead calling Su Mu.

This time, the call went through, and Qiao Yu breathed a little easier.

But it wasn’t Su Mu himself who answered, it was Jiang Bei, as he recognized from the voice:

"Qiao Yu."

"Why you? Where’s Su Mu?"

Jiang Bei’s voice paused shortly, with detectable low spirits, and spoke in a subdued tone:

"Sleeping. Do you need something?"

Qiao Yu then recalled the matter of Qiqi, with a slight smile: "I have good news to tell you, Qiqi’s back."

He wasn’t sure if the news was too unimaginable for everyone who has been waiting for over a month, or they no longer held out hope for Qiqi’s return, or perhaps they never expected Qiqi to come back so suddenly and unexpectedly. Whatever the case, Jiang Bei paused after hearing these words, and Qiao Yu just waited silently for Jiang Bei to react.

Seconds later, Jiang Bei’s voice came through with obvious fluctuation and uncontrollable emotion:

"What did you say? Say it again."

Qiao Yu spoke:

"Qiqi is back. Just now, someone brought Qiqi to the hospital entrance. She’s in the emergency department right now. I just tried calling Fu Shinian, but his phone is off. Is he home? You tell them to come quickly. Although Qiqi’s condition isn’t great, seeing her should bring joy to Su Mu and Fu Shinian regardless of any further issues."

"Alright, I’ll notify..." Jiang Bei’s voice abruptly halted, a few seconds later posing an inexplicable question to Qiao Yu: "What did you just say? You said Fu Shinian’s phone is off?"

"Yes, I thought it strange too. His phone never switches off, I don’t know what’s going on today..."

"Call the police!"

Jiang Bei was so elated that it only sank in now that Qiqi’s return was no coincidence or chance occurrence, but because Fu Shinian exchanged himself for her.

She didn’t know what deal Fu Shinian had made with Qin Nianwan, but now that Qiqi was back, it could only mean the deal was complete, that Qin Nianwan released Qiqi. However, Fu Shinian’s phone being off highly suggests...

Jiang Bei dared not think further, while Qiao Yu sensed the gravity of the situation:

"What do you mean? Do you know where Shinian went? Do you know something?"

Jiang Bei didn’t have the time to explain anything to Qiao Yu: "I’ll tell you once I get to the hospital."

With these words, Jiang Bei directly hung up the call. She first contacted the police officer who had been in touch with the Fu family, briefly explaining the situation. Realizing its seriousness, the officer immediately decided to investigate.

When Jiang Bei was about to wake Su Mu to go to the hospital to see Qiqi, she suddenly thought of something. Without any hesitation, she dialed Rong Shen’s number. Rong Shen didn’t expect to hear Jiang Bei’s voice when he picked up, taken aback:

"Jiang Bei?"

"It’s me. You need to have your people search for Fu Shinian. He went to make a deal with Qin Nianwan, and now Qiqi’s back. I don’t know if he’s in any danger, but right now I don’t know where he is or what he’s going through. I’ve already called the police, but I think..."

"I understand." Rong Shen interrupted Jiang Bei: "I get what you mean. I will have people search now, and I’ll find Fu Shinian’s location as quickly as possible. You check the study to see if Fu Shinian left something or if there’s an address, which would speed things up."

Rong Shen’s words reminded Jiang Bei, as she recalled Fu Shinian, to make Su Mu believe, sent a message with the address via another phone the day after he found out. She paused for a second:

"Don’t hang up yet, Su Mu’s phone might have the address."

She quickly skimmed through the messages on Su Mu’s phone, her hands trembling with nerves, but she successfully found the address. She told Rong Shen on the other end of the call: "At Shengang Dock."

"Okay, I’m heading there now."

"Rong Shen." Jiang Bei called out before Rong Shen could hang up: "Be careful."

Rong Shen chuckled on the other end:

"Alright."

After hanging up, Jiang Bei wasted no time and went to Su Mu’s bedside to wake her. She wasn’t sure how much medication Fu Shinian had given Su Mu, but throughout the whole afternoon, it seemed Su Mu’s sleep was uneasy, yet she never woke up, likely due to the medication’s effect.

But no matter what, Su Mu couldn’t continue sleeping at this time.

Fortunately, just as Jiang Bei believed, Su Mu hadn’t been sleeping soundly all along, but because of the medication’s suppression in her system, remained unable to wake, as though trapped in a nightmare. She knew she shouldn’t sleep, should wake quickly, but just couldn’t open her eyes.

Jiang Bei’s call to her felt like a cold bucket of water poured over her, waking her up. She almost instantly opened her eyes, which were shockingly clear as if she hadn’t been asleep. Before Jiang Bei could say anything, Su Mu instinctively grabbed her arm:

"Why are you here? Where is Fu Shinian?"

Jiang Bei wasn’t sure why Su Mu was asking about Fu Shinian at this moment, but seeing her expression, it was mostly because she sensed something before falling asleep, which resulted in her current tension. However, Jiang Bei couldn’t bluntly tell her what Fu Shinian was going through.

Jiang Bei didn’t answer her question, knowing Su Mu would inevitably press on, so before she could speak, Jiang Bei preemptively brought up Qiqi’s situation. Only this way could temporarily divert Su Mu’s attention from Fu Shinian’s matter. She looked at Su Mu:

"Susu, we’re going to the hospital; Qiqi is back."

Su Mu showed no reaction, her gaze toward Jiang Bei didn’t even flicker, as if she didn’t understand what Jiang Bei said, or perhaps she didn’t dare believe, thinking she was dreaming and fearing that moving would wake her from it.

Jiang Bei smiled slightly, holding her hand tightly:

"Susu, I’m not lying to you. This isn’t a dream. Qiao Yu just called, and Qiqi is back, now at the hospital."

Su Mu reacted, almost reflexively rising from the bed, running toward the door without wearing any shoes. Jiang Bei, being pregnant, couldn’t follow too quickly. When she went after her, all she saw was Su Mu’s figure descending downstairs, fearing something might happen to Su Mu due to her emotions on the way. Jiang Bei hurriedly called Auntie Lin:

"Auntie Lin, stop Su Mu."

Auntie Lin had no idea what was going on but given Su Mu’s unstable mental state in recent times, she didn’t hesitate for a second and rushed over to close the door. The moment the door shut, Su Mu had reached it and her gaze almost burned Auntie Lin on the spot.

"Ma’am..."

"Move aside!"

It was Auntie Lin’s first time seeing Su Mu like this, and she didn’t know what else she could say. Fortunately, Jiang Bei came downstairs at that moment, standing between her and Su Mu, allowing her to quietly breathe a sigh of relief, though Su Mu remained expressionless as she looked at Jiang Bei.

Jiang Bei sighed:

"Qiqi is back, you wouldn’t want something happening to you on the way to make Qiqi worry, right?"

Su Mu’s expression slightly softened. Jiang Bei’s words just sank in, confirming ’Qiqi’s already back,’ making her so desperate to see Qiqi, in such a rush that she had no time for any emotions regarding this matter, only the urge to see Qiqi, no one could stop her.

Auntie Lin hadn’t left, and upon hearing Jiang Bei’s words, was taken aback before subsequently smiling:

"Really? Qiqi is back?"

Jiang Bei nodded and looked at Su Mu’s current state, telling Auntie Lin:

"Auntie Lin, go upstairs and fetch clothes for Su Mu, we need to see Qiqi."

"Alright, alright, alright." Auntie Lin was so happy she didn’t know what to say, darting upstairs.

Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu, sighed:

"I know you’re in a hurry. I am too, but we can’t let anything happen to ourselves now. If you go to the hospital looking like this, it would make Qiqi worry about you. Put on some clothes, I’ll call the driver now, and we’ll head to the hospital immediately, okay?"

Auntie Lin must have been worried Su Mu would leave without delay, so she completed the task swiftly. As Jiang Bei finished speaking, Auntie Lin was already visible at the top of the stairs. Seeing Su Mu not moving, Jiang Bei still felt concerned.

Until Su Mu, with reddened eyes, nodded her head: "Okay."

Jiang Bei relaxed:

"Auntie Lin brought down your clothes; go get dressed and change your shoes. I’ll notify the driver now."

Su Mu directly turned and walked toward Auntie Lin, beginning to dress, while Jiang Bei opened the door to call for the driver. The whole process took less than three minutes, and when Su Mu stepped out, the driver already had the car waiting at the door. Both women got in.
