Chapter 615: Still Alive
Chapter 615: Chapter 615: Still Alive
Fu Shinian sped down the road filled with self-recrimination, berating himself repeatedly inside and out. At first, he hadn’t connected Qiqi’s disappearance to the shooting case three years ago. But back at Bishui Yuntian, during a conversation between Su Mu and Su Shiyue, an absurd idea had crossed his mind. Before he could examine it further, Rong Shen suddenly appeared with news from Wen Shaoyuan.
A group of them rushed to the hospital, only to receive more updates from the traffic police. Coupled with the location where Wen Shaoyuan was discovered, Fu Shinian began to realize something vaguely—but at the time, his thoughts were a chaotic mess, unable to piece together any coherent clues. It wasn’t until Ji Qingluan mentioned a specific place moments ago that clarity struck.
It finally dawned on him—the connection was not just an overactive imagination but a reality. The West Suburb... the highway... the location where Wen Shaoyuan was found... all these places were hauntingly familiar.
It was the site where Su Mu had been kidnapped three years ago.
He had overlooked this place. How could he have overlooked it?
For years, he had been convinced that the person who tried to kill both him and Su Mu three years ago would resurface one day. But he hadn’t anticipated that the person would target Qiqi—and would do so in the same location.
Now, every speculation was confirmed, and the scattered hints had crystallized into vivid clues. Yet it might already be too late.
He had realized it far too late.
Covering a distance meant for two hours in just one, Fu Shinian reached the place by 8 p.m. Darkness enveloped the surroundings in an oppressive gloom. Ji Nanfeng and Rong Shen followed closely behind, their car headlights illuminating the direction of the parking lot. Without hesitation, Fu Shinian strode forward.
Fu Shinian had been here once before—only once. Yet stepping inside again felt like the piercing cold never truly left. The last time he was here, he lost Su Mu; this time, it was Qiqi. The urge to raze this place to the ground surged within him, but first, he needed to find Qiqi.
The first floor of the parking lot seemed ordinary. Fu Shinian briskly swept his phone’s flashlight across the area before descending to the second floor.
A wave of pungent blood scent hit them. Fu Shinian smelled it. So did Rong Shen and Ji Nanfeng. The realization sank like lead into each person’s heart, yet none stopped moving. No matter what outcome awaited them, they had to face it.
The lights in the basement were on. Fu Shinian instantly caught sight of the man lying motionless on the ground. He turned off his phone and walked over, but Rong Shen reached the man first, examining him before shaking his head at Fu Shinian:
"Dead."
The cycles of fate—uncannily similar. Three years ago, another man had died during the kidnapping case here.
Ji Nanfeng circled the man’s body:
"Gunshot wounds to all four limbs. It seems the shooter has decent aim."
Fu Shinian had no time for such deductions. His eyes fell on a pink backpack by a nearby pillar, decorated with an image of the Ice Queen—Qiqi’s favorite cartoon. He quickly strode forward, picked it up, but could see no trace of Qiqi.
At that moment, Su Mu walked in with Wei Shaoqin. Her eyes immediately landed on Qiqi’s backpack, and a spark of hope lit within her. She hurried over, clutching it in her arms. After several seconds of silence, she turned to Fu Shinian:
"Where’s Qiqi?"
Qiqi wasn’t here.
Fu Shinian didn’t know how to respond. The rope on the floor, however, served as stark evidence that Qiqi had been bound here hours earlier—before being transferred elsewhere following Wen Shaoyuan and Ji Qingluan’s departure. Watching Su Mu’s desperate expression, he tried to comfort her:
"Susu, Qiqi is still alive. We’ll find her."
Su Mu’s tears suddenly streamed down with no warning. It was too late—ultimately too late. If only they had learned of Qiqi’s whereabouts sooner, perhaps she would now be cradling Qiqi herself instead of her backpack.
Yet even amidst the despair, this place offered Su Mu a sliver of reassurance: Qiqi was still alive, though she remained out of reach.
"Yes, we’ll find her. We’ll definitely find her."
Ji Nanfeng had already called the police, who would arrive shortly. Given Rong Shen’s identity, staying at the scene wasn’t ideal. Ji Nanfeng glanced at him:
"You should head out first."
Rong Shen didn’t object. Before leaving, he cast a look at Fu Shinian:
"I’ll have people continue searching. The police have their methods, and I have mine."
Fu Shinian met his gaze, giving a nod:
"Thank you."
Fu Shinian and Su Mu didn’t wait for the police to arrive. Since Qiqi was no longer here, staying served no purpose. Someone still needed to remain behind—Ji Nanfeng looked at Fu Shinian:
"Take Su Mu with you and leave."
Wei Shaoqin, deeply concerned about Su Mu, had no intention to stay. As Fu Shinian helped the trembling Su Mu out, Wei Shaoqin instinctively tried to follow—only to be stopped by Ji Nanfeng:
"Stay with me."
Wei Shaoqin frowned:
"Don’t tell me you’re scared."
"Fear isn’t the issue, but it’s inappropriate for you to leave right now."
Wei Shaoqin glanced toward Su Mu’s departing figure, puzzled by Ji Nanfeng’s words. Before he could voice his confusion, Ji Nanfeng chuckled softly:
"To be frank, you haven’t let go of Su Mu over all these years, have you? Don’t deny it—it’s written all over your face. I wasn’t sure before when we met, but seeing your reaction to Su Mu’s distress confirms it. Still, no matter how obvious it is, Wei Shaoqin, both Fu Shinian and I can see it. Though he doesn’t have the headspace to deal with messy emotions right now, it’s better for you not to stir up trouble at this time."
Ji Nanfeng’s words seemed to strike a chord. As Su Mu and Fu Shinian disappeared from view, Wei Shaoqin ultimately abandoned the thought of following them. Yet his attitude toward Ji Nanfeng remained far from friendly. Sitting down on a nearby rock, he lit a cigarette, staring at the corpse before him with a faint smile:
"You have such sharp insights into everything, yet your own life is a complete mess. I can’t help but admire you for that."
Ji Nanfeng chuckled lightly, saying nothing.
Wei Shaoqin’s remark summarized his reality perfectly—there was no room for denial.
On the drive back, Fu Shinian slowed his car down. Su Mu, clutching Qiqi’s backpack, sat dazed in the passenger seat, her gaze distant and unfocused. Fu Shinian, though exhausted and mentally strained, kept glancing at her worriedly.
She seemed unnervingly calm.
So calm, it felt unsettling.
He wanted to say something, but his phone rang just then.
