Chapter 608: Chapter 608: Left Behind
He never imagined that one day he would have the chance to encounter a woman like this. At this moment, he was grateful for his choice.
Ji Qingluan knew that if she didn’t act immediately, it might be too late. The man hadn’t noticed the imminent danger until something cold pressed against his chest. He instinctively glanced down and froze.
Ji Qingluan: "Get down."
The man looked at Ji Qingluan and smiled.
Although his tone appeared nonchalant, Ji Qingluan couldn’t afford to focus on how humiliating her current posture was. She knew very well that this man was cunning; even the slightest lapse in vigilance would lead to a counterattack. If that happened, she might not be lucky enough to get a second chance.
Ji Qingluan’s skills weren’t bad. She watched as the man in front of her stepped back, one step after another. Initially, Ji Qingluan didn’t notice what he was planning. By the time she realized his intentions, it was almost too late. Without overthinking, she fired a shot that pierced through his arm, stopping him from trying to grab Wen Shaoyuan as a hostage.
The man felt the pain but only grunted without collapsing. Ji Qingluan stood up as well, battered and disheveled but no longer caring about her appearance. She stared at the man for a few seconds, before firing several more shots without hesitation, hitting his other arm and both legs.
She didn’t want to kill him—not in front of the children, at least. Dirtying her hands for someone like him wasn’t worth it. However, if she knew what consequences her momentary mercy might bring, she would have harbored no hesitation.
After confirming the man was down and unable to move, Ji Qingluan lowered her gun and picked up her clothes to put them on. She walked over and tightly embraced the two shivering children, gently comforting them:
"It’s okay now, it’s okay now. I’ll take you away."
Even though Wen Shaoyuan came from a powerful family, he had never witnessed anything like this before. He stood frozen, unable to process what had just happened. If not for Qiqi in his arms needing protection, he might have been completely paralyzed with fear.
Wen Shaoyuan already reacted this way, so Qiqi’s condition went without saying. She was already too frightened to make a sound, her tears flowing incessantly. Ji Qingluan saw this and felt a pang of heartache.
She tried to untie the ropes binding Qiqi so they could leave, only to encounter the same problem as Wen Shaoyuan had. The knots binding Qiqi weren’t simple; she couldn’t untie them. The harder she exerted force, the tighter the ropes dug into Qiqi’s skin, leaving deep marks. Wen Shaoyuan couldn’t help but speak up:
"Aunt Qing, Qiqi will hurt."
Time was critical. No one knew when Yu Xin would return. If she came back armed, Ji Qingluan’s sacrifice to create this advantageous situation would be for nothing. Ji Qingluan searched for a knife, but there was nothing nearby.
A few seconds later, she remembered the gun. Though it might scare the children by using it near Qiqi, it was far better than waiting here to die. Ji Qingluan turned around to fetch the gun she had set behind her.
She instinctively looked toward the man lying on the ground. A trail of blood extended behind him, and neither Ji Qingluan nor Wen Shaoyuan had noticed when he crawled toward the gun and had now gripped it, aiming directly at them.
Ji Qingluan immediately lunged toward Wen Shaoyuan, shouting, "Watch out!"
But it was already too late...
The bullet tore through the air, heading straight toward Wen Shaoyuan. No matter how fast Ji Qingluan was, she couldn’t outrun it, and could only watch as Wen Shaoyuan collapsed before her eyes.
She rushed over to check on Wen Shaoyuan’s wounds, cradling him in her arms. Unexpectedly, the man fired another shot that hit her side waist—fortunately sparing Wen Shaoyuan.
Ji Qingluan had observed earlier that the weapon in the man’s hand was no longer a threat to her. Moreover, he had already succumbed to excessive blood loss and fainted.
Enduring the pain, Ji Qingluan carefully examined Wen Shaoyuan’s injuries. She should count herself lucky—the man’s arm injuries, inflicted earlier, meant the bullet had struck Wen Shaoyuan’s shoulder instead of his chest.
Qiqi seemed completely shocked by the sudden gunfire. She stared blankly at Wen Shaoyuan as his body fell before her. At first speechless from fear, she now seemed unable to shed even a tear. She kept staring at Wen Shaoyuan, frozen like a statue, without any reaction.
Wen Shaoyuan’s blood gradually soaked through his clothes. Qiqi watched the growing pool of red in front of her and finally let out a piercing scream. Ji Qingluan wanted to comfort her, but Qiqi seemed trapped in her own world, unable to hear anything.
Wen Shaoyuan hadn’t lost consciousness. Whether it was due to sheer pain tolerance or his determination to console Qiqi, he attempted to speak. However, the sound that escaped was so faint even he could barely hear it. His vision blurred further and further; even Qiqi’s face was becoming indistinct.
Both Ji Qingluan and Wen Shaoyuan were wounded. Her death didn’t matter, but Wen Shaoyuan couldn’t die. She had to get him out safely. However, given the circumstances—Qiqi’s rope couldn’t be untied, Wen Shaoyuan was on the verge of unconsciousness, her own waist injury, and the looming threat of Yu Xin’s return—they were in a dire situation.
If Yu Xin returned now, they would all die.
The choice wasn’t hard—take Wen Shaoyuan away or stay and die with Qiqi. Yet, leaving a three-year-old child here alone... what she might face, Ji Qingluan didn’t dare to imagine. Still... there was no other option.
With a pale face, Ji Qingluan gazed deeply at Qiqi. Qiqi’s screams gradually quieted as she met Ji Qingluan’s eyes. After a few seconds, Ji Qingluan gritted her teeth, lifted Wen Shaoyuan, and stepped toward the staircase.
Wen Shaoyuan wanted to call out but had no strength to do so. As the distance between him and Qiqi grew, he watched her from Ji Qingluan’s lurching arms, wanting to reach out—but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t touch her.
