Chapter 607: Chapter 607: No Other Choice
"Aunt Qing."
Even though Wen Shaoyuan didn’t know exactly what Ji Qingluan had promised that man, he could tell from her expression that it wasn’t anything good. He tried to intervene, but Ji Qingluan stopped him with a look and smiled faintly:
"Don’t worry, Aunt Qing will be fine. Stay here and take good care of Qiqi."
As she spoke, she walked over and hugged Wen Shaoyuan, lowering her voice by his ear: "You’re smart, so if there’s a chance later, take Qiqi and run. Don’t look back. Don’t worry about me."
Wen Shaoyuan wanted to say something more, but the man had already grown impatient:
"Stalling for time, are we?"
Ji Qingluan looked at the man: "No."
"Then you must not have heard me. I said—come here."
"Before I come over, shouldn’t you untie me first?"
The man raised an eyebrow:
"Ah, I seem to have forgotten about that."
With that, he strode over and untied the ropes behind Ji Qingluan. For a moment, she regained a semblance of freedom, but because he had tied her so tightly, her arms were numb. She had no time to care about that, as the man once again ordered her to come closer.
Ji Qingluan moved. With someone this dangerous standing before her, there was no guessing what he might do if ignored further. He might change his mind, might refuse to proceed with the deal they had. That was a risk Ji Qingluan couldn’t afford to take.
Of course, she wanted to buy more time, but Ji Qingluan understood deeply that no amount of stalling would help. In the short term, no one was coming to save them. It was unlikely anyone in Shen City even realized the two children were missing yet.
She shot a glance at Wen Shaoyuan, signaling him to remember her earlier words, then stood and walked toward the man. It was a short distance, less than ten steps, but every step Ji Qingluan took felt like a march toward her own execution. If she was lucky, her body might survive, but her spirit surely wouldn’t.
Was it worth it? Ji Qingluan asked herself this.
It had to be worth it, didn’t it? After all, the man she loved had once fought tirelessly to save so many people. And now, what she was trying to save was the bloodline of the man she loved. He had already lost so much, so much... If Wen Shaoyuan died here too, she feared he wouldn’t be able to bear it.
For him, even for him, Ji Qingluan believed it would be worth it.
Step by step, Ji Qingluan drew closer to the man until she finally stood before him. The man curved his lips in a smirk, lifted her chin with his hand, and asked one last time:
"Are you sure about this?"
Ji Qingluan looked into his face:
"I don’t have another choice."
He knelt before Qiqi, holding her tightly in his arms. Qiqi squirmed a bit from the force—it hurt a little—but she didn’t complain. Though still young, she seemed to understand at least a shadow of Wen Shaoyuan’s feelings in that moment. She wanted to hug him too, but her tied hands made it impossible, so she said softly:
"Don’t be scared, Brother Yuan. Qiqi will stay with you."
Yu Xin cursed on the other end of the phone. The man offered no response and hung up on her. In that moment, Ji Qingluan realized her time was almost up.
She couldn’t let this end with the children’s lives lost here too.
