Chapter 591: Chapter 591: His Inverse Scale, Not to be Touched
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu, who seemed on the verge of crying, stood up and sat down beside her, and handed her a tissue, saying softly:
"What’s wrong with you two?"
Su Mu shook her head: "Nothing much, just a bit of an accident."
"But your expressions are all telling me something terrible has happened between you," Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu: "I’ve been watching how you and Fu Shinian have been getting along lately, I know how he treats you, and you know it too. So, I have no objections to you two getting back together, as long as you want it and as long as he treats you well. But now I really can’t understand what’s happening."
"Fu Shinian is not a fickle man. The fact that he went to such lengths to win you back means that he has set his heart on you for life, you are irreplaceable. So, during this time, he has been spoiling you, protecting you, being considerate to you, helping you. I really can’t figure out what could have happened between you two to end up like this."
Su Mu knew that if she didn’t tell him, Jiang Bei would keep worrying, so she briefly explained what had happened that afternoon, and upon hearing it, Jiang Bei slightly furrowed his brows:
"Jumping off the building?"
"Yes, after finding out that I hadn’t been to the hospital to see her recently and even the nutritious porridge I brought wasn’t made by me, she reacted that way. I was scared at the moment too, all I wanted to do was to save her, so I agreed to her demands to marry Wen Han. Shinian was very angry, but he held it in until everything was over, and then I couldn’t find him."
After listening to the whole story, Jiang Bei sighed slightly. She really didn’t know what to say; she couldn’t blame Su Mu, nor could she call Fu Shinian petty. After all, none of them were wrong. Su Mu was trying to save someone, and Fu Shinian was concerned about family, both with their own justifiable reasons.
"Susu, if today my aunt was persuaded by Shaoyuan to really insist on you getting a marriage certificate with Wen Han, what would you have done?"
Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei and didn’t speak, but Jiang Bei had already gotten her answer from Su Mu’s silence:
"Maybe that’s why Fu Shinian is upset. He’s not angry that you want to save someone; he would too, otherwise, he wouldn’t have rushed over and stayed until the end before leaving. He’s upset because at the moment of crisis, you chose to let go of him."
"But..."
"I know, it was just a stopgap measure, that you and Wen Han could not really be together, nor truly marry. Even if a marriage certificate was obtained, it would be annulled as quickly as possible. But from Fu Shinian’s point of view, he was the one being abandoned by you. There’s no point in arguing about it." Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu: "I’ve told you before to keep your distance from the Wen Family. Even if Fu Shinian really doesn’t mind, you shouldn’t maintain contact. My aunt’s reliance on you is not a good thing, it is merely a display of selfishness. You don’t have to let this kind of attachment disrupt your life which has finally become peaceful again."
Su Mu quietly listened to Jiang Bei and smiled slightly:
"How could I not know that my aunt’s obsession is only because I can take good care of Shaoyuan and Wen Han? As long as I am married, even if I don’t like it, there is a responsibility involved. As long as there is this responsibility, I will treat them well. By leaving them to me, she also feels at ease. Yet, even so, I can’t forget my aunt’s kindness over the past three years. Although she always hoped I would end up with Wen Han, her kindness towards me was genuine all along."
"Some things I’m going to say you might not want to hear, but I still want to say them. Indeed, her kindness towards you is real, but have you ever thought, if from the beginning she had decided you and Wen Han weren’t suitable, would she have still treated you this well over the past three years? People give when they desire something; there is no such thing as kindness without reason or malice without cause. If you think about it in reverse, you’ll understand that her kindness had a motive behind it from the start. It may sound pessimistic to say this, but that’s the truth."
Su Mu smiled:
"I know, I won’t continue this way after this incident. You’re right, it’s not good for anyone."
Jiang Bei nodded:
"Neither you nor Fu Shinian were wrong today, but I do think that Fu Shinian must feel aggrieved in his emotions. Considering how much he has spoiled you these days, just soften up this time, turn the page on this matter, and don’t let it remain tense. You’re upset, and he feels even worse inside."
"It seems like this is the first time you are speaking up for Fu Shinian."
"That’s not the point. The point is that you actually don’t want him to feel aggrieved either. It’s just that you’re used to it, used to his meekness towards you, used to him considering you in everything. So in the matter today, even though you knew you might hurt him, you still couldn’t take the initiative to reconcile."
Su Mu was stunned for a moment; she never thought of herself as unreasonable, but after Jiang Bei’s words, she realized that she might really have become this kind of person in front of Fu Shinian. Even though she knew she was in the wrong, she stubbornly refused to yield out of habit, used to Fu Shinian’s concessions and care.
Seeing Su Mu’s expression, Jiang Bei knew that she had come to an understanding. She smiled gently, patted Su Mu’s shoulder, and then went upstairs. In the dining room, with only Su Mu alone, she sat quietly for a long time, then smiled faintly. Indeed, when someone dotes on you, loves you, and protects you, one could indeed play the princess for a lifetime.
Fu Shinian naturally treated Su Mu as if she were the apple of his eye, but even so, he had his untouchable scales. Su Mu leaving him was Fu Shinian’s untouchable scale.
Thinking about how his untouchable scale was about her, and it represented how much he cared, the discomfort in Su Mu’s heart lessened considerably. She glanced upstairs and then at the food on the table that she had hardly touched after all her effort, she sighed helplessly and rose to go upstairs.
Fu Shinian wasn’t in the master bedroom, so Su Mu went to the study. As she pushed the door open, Fu Shinian was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window talking on the phone. Because Su Mu was very quiet, he didn’t hear her, and thus, did not turn around. Thinking he was discussing work, Su Mu didn’t interrupt until she heard Fu Shinian say:
"I don’t care whether this matter is simple or difficult for you, nor do I care how you handle it. I give you one week to send Zhou Yaxian out of the country for me. When she no longer has these mental episodes, then consider whether she should come back. That’s it."
After finishing the call, Fu Shinian remained staring out the window silently for a few seconds before turning around, clearly intending to sit in the office chair, only to see Su Mu’s puzzled gaze upon him. He didn’t feel any guilt from being caught, and he simply looked at her indifferently:
"When did you come in?"
