Chapter 588: Chapter 588: Standing Here, Already Grateful

The wind on the rooftop was strong, and Su Mu was very cold. She really wanted to turn back and look at the person who was angry with her. She could even imagine what his expression might be at this moment, but ultimately she did not, because once she turned around, perhaps she wouldn’t have the same determination.

Zhou Yaxian ignored Fu Shinian. After Su Mu agreed, she unbelievingly stared at Su Mu:

"What did you say?"

"I said okay, I will marry Wen Han. I promise you, so can you come down now?"

"You’re not lying to me?"

Su Mu shook her head: "Of course not. I have promised, and I will keep my word. I want you to plan our wedding, prepare the attire. Qiqi and Shaoyuan have grown up too; they can be our flower children. What do you say?"

Zhou Yaxian nodded her head:

"Good, of course, it’s good. As long as you agree to marry Wen Han, whatever you say goes."

At this point, Zhou Yaxian seemed to be reminded of something; she mumbled to herself doubtfully for a while, then looked at Su Mu with some uncertainty and asked:

"Susu, have I ever done something to wrong you? Why do I always feel like there has been unpleasantness between us?"

Su Mu didn’t know whether Zhou Yaxian had thought of something, but the most important thing at this moment was to get her down. She smiled slightly:

"Auntie, you must be joking. Our relationship has always been very good, without any unpleasantness. Now that I have already agreed to marry Wen Han, please don’t stand up there and scare me. Let’s come down and have a meal together, then talk about the wedding arrangements, okay?"

Zhou Yaxian didn’t move, but her expression and posture clearly accepted what Su Mu had said. Su Mu took a deep breath, stepped forward, Fu Shinian and Wen Han’s hearts were in their throats, fearing that one careless move could ruin everything.

Su Mu was also very worried. She was afraid that if she didn’t hold on tight enough, Zhou Yaxian might fall. So she was extremely cautious.

Just as she was about to touch Zhou Yaxian’s outstretched hand, Su Mu’s heart began to settle back into place slowly because, after all, it would be okay as long as she grabbed hold. But at that moment, Zhou Yaxian suddenly withdrew her hand. Su Mu was startled and looked up at her:

"Auntie?"

"I don’t trust you." Zhou Yaxian spoke, looking at Su Mu and then at Wen Han: "If I go down with you and you still don’t get married, what then? You’ll be keeping a very close eye on me, and I’ll have no chance of making you get married."

Su Mu’s heart sank, and after a few seconds, she spoke:

"Auntie, what would you like to do, then?"

"You go get the marriage certificate now, and I will wait for you here," Zhou Yaxian said. "I won’t believe you until I see the marriage certificate in front of me."

Su Mu spoke a few more words, but ultimately could not get another word from Zhou Yaxian. Zhou Yaxian even began to be on guard again, protecting herself from anyone who might take advantage of her inattention to take her away from this place. Su Mu stood quietly watching her for a while, then turned around and went back to Fu Shinian and Wen Han.

She felt guilty, so she dared not look into Fu Shinian’s eyes, focusing only on Wen Han:

"Let Shaoyuan come over. Maybe he can find a way."

"I’ve already called him. He should be arriving soon."

Fu Shinian, silent for a few seconds after looking at Su Mu who hadn’t spoken, turned and left. Su Mu watched his retreating figure feeling suddenly powerless. She felt wronged and even wanted to cry. Wen Han had been observing Su Mu’s expression all along and felt an impulse to hold her in his arms, but he knew it was inappropriate.

So, he could only offer comforting words:

"You can leave. What Shinian said is right; after all, everything that happened here ultimately has nothing to do with you. I am already grateful that you could come."

Su Mu shook her head:

"Actually, I don’t quite understand why Aunt Zhou is so fixated on us being together. I really don’t understand. If I had known it would come to this today, I would never have chosen to start with you. But now, it’s no use saying anything. Aunt Zhou keeps mentioning my name; even if I leave, how can I be at peace?"

Wen Shaoyuan arrived soon after, appearing with Fu Shinian. Su Mu looked at Shinian returning and suddenly felt at ease, like he was a soothing pill, yet he didn’t glance at Su Mu again, seemingly utterly disappointed in her.

The moment Wen Shaoyuan saw where Zhou Yaxian was standing, he burst into tears. He was a rational and mature child, and apart from when Wen Songyan passed away, Su Mu rarely saw him so emotionally unrestrained. It was as if he couldn’t control it any longer. He walked up and stood in front of Zhou Yaxian, looking at her puzzled:

"Grandma, what are you doing? Do you not want me anymore?"

Zhou Yaxian looked at Wen Shaoyuan, her eyes suddenly turning red: "Shaoyuan?"

"Grandma, I’ve already lost Grandpa, and now I only have you and Dad. I’ve been without a mom since I was little, and there have never been many relatives around me. Can you really bear to make me lose another one now?"

"Shaoyuan, what are you talking about? How could Grandma not want you? I’m doing this because I want you to have one more person who loves you. Don’t you like your Aunt Su? Having her become your mom and take care of you for a lifetime would be good too, wouldn’t it? Don’t you want that? I remember you told Grandma you wanted Aunt Su to be your mom."

Wen Shaoyuan nodded:

"Yes, I really like Aunt Su, and I admit it. I’m envious and I do want a mom like her, but Grandma, even with all my wishes, shouldn’t it be done this way? Do you realize how hurtful this is? You’re not only making things difficult for Aunt Su but also for me. If you’re doing this for my sake, even if under your threats Aunt Su agrees to marry Dad, then what about me? How am I supposed to interact with Aunt Su after they’re married?"

"You’re thinking too much..."

"It’s not that I’m overthinking; it’s that you’re oversimplifying things, Grandma. If that day really comes, I’m sure Aunt Su will still be good to me, but she certainly won’t be as close as before. We can’t go back to how things were, and then there’s Qiqi..." Wen Shaoyuan looked at Zhou Yaxian: "Grandma, if Aunt Su and Dad get married, what about me and Qiqi? I want to be with Qiqi, to marry her when we grow up, not to have her become an existence like a sister. I also agreed to Dad and Aunt Su breaking up earlier, in part for my own sake. I don’t want to be separated from Qiqi, nor do I want us to face any tribulations."

"Shaoyuan, you’re still too young. You can’t be certain you’ll end up with Qiqi in the future. Even if you were, that’s not an issue. You’re not blood siblings; it’s permissible."

"It’s not the same." Wen Shaoyuan was resolute: "I want Qiqi to be with me without any hardships."
