Chapter 561: Chapter 561: Extremely Awkward in the Face of the Truth
After hearing what Fu Shinian had said, Yu Qingzhou gave a wry smile, looked up to meet Fu Shinian’s gaze, and said:
"Yes, I have many regrets."
When Yu Qingzhou had just returned to the country to settle Shi Lihua’s affairs, Fu Shinian had suggested he acknowledge Su Shiyue as his sibling. Although it would have been a shock for Su Shiyue, or might not have been easy to accept, Fu Shinian felt that family was still family after all. Moreover, Yu Qingzhou was very fond of Su Shiyue, even though they had never met.
But after all, she was his only family in this world.
Still, Yu Qingzhou was also afraid that his appearance might disrupt Su Shiyue’s life and keep her from being happy. Therefore, he had declined, thinking that not knowing about his existence might be for the best.
For months, he wandered through cities big and small within the country, yet he always felt Shen City was the best. Especially after making Wei Shaoqin his good friend there, he lost any will to leave. In fact, he harbored a faint hope, wishing that maybe he could brush past this world’s only kin unknowingly and learn whether she was doing well.
Hearing from Wei Shaoqin that Su Shiyue and Su Mu’s relationship had always been rocky, Yu Qingzhou never imagined he’d see Su Shiyue in Su Mu’s studio. Between him and her, it seemed they had never been so close; thus, he lost his composure that day.
He believed Wei Shaoqin and Su Mu had noticed his lapse in composure too, but at that moment, they did not understand what was going on.
Knowing where Su Shiyue was and having a legitimate reason to see her at the studio, Yu Qingzhou could no longer control his desire to get close to her, to understand her. The decision he had made to never disturb her life slowly crumbled, and he contemplated getting to know her again.
After all, he was too lonely by himself.
He thought that if they got along well, it could lay a good foundation for acknowledging each other as family in the future. She might be better able to accept him too. But what he had never expected was that Su Shiyue’s feelings for him were not of friendship, but of romantic love.
He panicked, he rejected her, and told her earnestly that it was impossible, also urging her to quickly relinquish such thoughts. If she still held onto such ideas, then they should never meet again.
At that moment, Yu Qingzhou began to regret. He regretted not following Fu Shinian’s advice at the first meeting with Su Shiyue. He also regretted making that initial choice, and why after meeting her again, he completely forgot his previous decision and got close to her again, leading to the current situation.
He never wanted this, he had never thought about it this way, so he left, preparing never to return. This would be better, yet Su Shiyue quietly followed and even ran away from home without telling anyone, alarming both Fu Shinian and Su Mu.
Yu Qingzhou felt an immense burden of guilt.
But no matter what, Fu Shinian was right in what he said: even if one has to leave, they should clear things up first. Su Shiyue had never been in love before, and who could say how long it would take for her to forget that person. If she never forgets for a lifetime, that would indeed be a grave sin.
Allowing his own little sister to harbor fantasies about her brother is something Fu Shinian would never do. Even if the situation exists now, he would decisively kill such thoughts without hesitation, no matter how cruel the process, rather than let her naively yearn for someone she shouldn’t.
Fu Shinian had given Yu Qingzhou ample time to prepare himself psychologically, but ultimately his patience was limited. Seeing that Yu Qingzhou still showed no intention of speaking, he inquired about his thoughts:
"If you feel it’s difficult to speak up, then let me do it."
Yu Qingzhou shook his head:
"Let me say it. Whatever consequences arise from my own actions, I should bear them."
"Then speak up. I don’t have a lot of time to waste here with you."
Yu Qingzhou nodded but still didn’t start speaking. Su Shiyue, however, couldn’t keep her composure during this agonizing wait and burst out, "What exactly do you want to tell me? What have you been hiding from me? Can’t you just get to the point? This feeling is driving me insane."
Fu Shinian remained impassive, Su Mu wanted to speak but didn’t know how, with only Yu Qingzhou turning towards Su Shiyue after her words. He said:
"Haven’t you always wanted to know why I rejected you? I’ll tell you now."
Su Shiyue’s heart skipped a beat, but she still didn’t interrupt Yu Qingzhou, staring at him without blinking, waiting for his response.
"I knew of your existence before you were born, but the first time I saw you was indeed in July this year. I had fantasized about what you looked like and had thought about the chance to live with you, but it never came to be."
Su Shiyue’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, sensing something, an inner roar erupting with the desire to stop Yu Qingzhou from continuing, yet she couldn’t; she watched him, fraught with tension.
"Shiyue, on one hand, I don’t want to disrupt your peaceful life, but on the other, I can’t help wanting to get closer to you. However, this closeness isn’t the romantic kind you think. I like you, I won’t deny it, but my liking for you is that of a brother for his sister."
"Brother for his sister?" Su Shiyue uttered softly, as if mumbling to herself. She dared not look into Yu Qingzhou’s eyes, nor anyone else’s in the room, so her gaze fell on her own hands, watching them clench together in nervousness, turning pale: "What do you mean ’brother for his sister’? I don’t understand what you’re saying."
Yu Qingzhou looked at Su Shiyue feeling heartbroken, but the person who had led to the situation at hand was indeed himself. He glanced at Fu Shinian, who showed no sign of emotional change, as though everything was within his control. Yu Qingzhou closed his eyes:
"I am your brother, your half-brother from the same father."
With a ’boom’, Su Shiyue collapsed onto the sofa behind her. Su Mu hurriedly stood up to help her, only to be pushed away by her gesturing hand. Fu Shinian saw this, his eyebrows slightly furrowing as he pulled Su Mu back to his side to sit down.
It was hard for Su Shiyue to describe how she felt at the moment—if she had to choose an adjective, it would be ’awkward.’
Yes, awkward.
She never imagined that the man she took a liking to at first glance would turn out to be her own brother. It was ironic and comical that in addition to Fu Shinian, her maternal half-brother, she had another paternal half-brother. Out of all the men in the world she did not care for, the one she took a fancy to turned out to be the brother she had never met.
