Chapter 550: Leading by Example for Su Mu
Chapter 550: Chapter 550: Leading by Example for Su Mu
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu:
"That’s great, they say a prodigal son who turns over a new leaf is more precious than gold, and Fu Shinian wasn’t really a prodigal to begin with. The fact that he can wait for you and beg for your return shows that he truly likes you. Even though it seems like he’s the one benefiting from all these twists and turns, seeing you happy truly makes me happy as well."
Su Mu smiled, wanting to ask Jiang Bei about her recent situation, but each time prior she seemed reluctant to share with her. So much so that Su Mu was now uncertain if bringing it up would upset her, which left her somewhat conflicted.
Jiang Bei cracked a smile:
"I heard Fu Shinian is here too, how come I don’t see him around?"
Su Mu suddenly thought of Rong Shen downstairs. It seemed that Jiang Bei was not aware that Rong Shen was downstairs, and Rong Shen didn’t seem to have any intention of coming up. She felt that, seeing Jiang Bei who had finally started to improve, she absolutely must not tell her about these things:
"He’s downstairs on a phone call, so I came up first."
"Hmm, you guys are going to pick up Qiqi later, right?"
"Yes, she went to school today."
Jiang Bei chuckled: "I feel like I haven’t seen Qiqi for such a long time."
"Next time I come over, I’ll bring her along."
While Jiang Bei and Su Mu were chatting, the doorbell rang again. Ji Nanfeng, who had been quietly sitting aside, stood up to open the door and saw Fu Shinian. He smiled slightly, stepping aside: "Come in."
Fu Shinian entered the room, changed his shoes, and greeted Jiang Bei, who smiled back but didn’t say much.
Ji Nanfeng signaled Fu Shinian to the study, leaving Jiang Bei and Su Mu alone in the living room. Looking at the closed door, Jiang Bei took the initiative to speak:
"I can see you’re almost bursting with curiosity. If there’s anything you want to know, just ask, don’t go home with an uneasy mind."
Su Mu smiled:
"What could I possibly be curious about? I’m only worried about how you’ve been. But seeing the change in you now, I’m not sure if I should ask."
"What do you want to know?"
"Are you and Ji Nanfeng, have you reconciled?"
Although Jiang Bei had braced herself for any questions, Su Mu’s question still silenced her for a few seconds, before she smiled: "I don’t really know. He’s been spending more and more time here lately. I went from initial annoyance to being numb now, not even sure what to feel, but life goes on."
"I never imagined you’d become such a negative person."
"Neither did I."
Jiang Bei smiled, but at that moment, the child in her belly gave her a little kick. Jiang Bei was taken aback and then smiled mildly. Su Mu noticed and felt surprised: "Did it move?"
"Yes, gave me a kick."
Jiang Bei took Su Mu’s hand and placed it on her belly, Su Mu waited carefully for another movement, but after a long time, there was none. Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei with some disappointment: "You see, even the baby is protesting against your negativity."
"Actually, all the changes you see in me now are because of the child in my belly."
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds before realizing: "Because of the fetal movement?"
"Yes, although I was pregnant before, I never truly realized that there was a living being inside of me. But after it started moving, I felt that it really depended on me for life, to be born healthily and to grow. You’re right, I might not consider myself, but I should plan for the child. It chose me to be its mother, so I cannot let it down."
Jiang Bei’s words eased Su Mu’s worries somewhat; she could feel that at least Jiang Bei would not easily subject herself to suffering again before the child was born. This was a good sign, but the marriage between her and Ji Nanfeng still weighed on Su Mu’s mind.
"So what are you and Ji Nanfeng planning to do? The child in your belly can’t feel these things now, but he will eventually be born and grow up. You surely don’t hope for her to live in a broken family, witnessing cold wars and arguments every day, right?"
"That won’t happen." Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu: "Really, it won’t."
As Jiang Bei spoke of what wouldn’t happen, she didn’t share her plans with Su Mu, so to Su Mu it felt even more that Jiang Bei was just trying to comfort herself, and also comfort Su Mu.
While Su Mu and Jiang Bei were discussing the future in the living room, the two men in the study couldn’t avoid the subject either. Ji Nanfeng had almost given up smoking in this apartment, but now that Jiang Bei wasn’t around, and the topic they were discussing felt heavy, he lit up a cigarette and then offered the pack to Fu Shinian, who, to his surprise, declined.
Ji Nanfeng stared at him as if he were looking at a monster:
"What does this mean? Quit smoking?"
"Hmm, planning to quit."
"Su Mu’s idea?"
Fu Shinian gave a slight smile:
"No, she hasn’t given me such an order. Actually, she smokes occasionally herself, but that’s exactly why I don’t want to smoke. I hope she quits, and before that, I must demonstrate my own commitment. Otherwise, how can I expect her to accept it? Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire."
The corner of Ji Nanfeng’s mouth twitched:
"Are you out of your mind?"
Fu Shinian coolly met his gaze:
"You can think I’m crazy, but I’m crazily happy, unlike you, on the verge of depression and suffering."
Ji Nanfeng: "...Is it really decent to stab someone right where it hurts?"
"Did I do the stabbing? It’s your heart that’s been wounded by a knife for so long, I merely touched it slightly and you are already in unbearable pain."
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
He felt that he shouldn’t have let Fu Shinian come today; a man who was indulging in the bliss of love and couldn’t find his bearings just seemed to rub salt in his own wounds. Now, he finally realized it, but it was unfortunately too late.
Fu Shinian, however, didn’t realize this and instead poked at Ji Nanfeng’s sore spot. He slightly lifted the corners of his lips:
"How are you planning to deal with the issue regarding the Qi Family’s daughter?"
On hearing this, Ji Nanfeng frowned:
"Deal with what? It’s not an issue at all from my perspective. I’m already married and my wife is Jiang Bei. What does it have to do with the Qi Family?"
"Not the Qi Family, let’s talk about your mother." Fu Shinian looked at Ji Nanfeng with a faint smile. "Your mother looks down on Jiang Bei and is doing everything possible to get you two to divorce, even planning to force Jiang Bei out of the Ji Family after she gives birth to the child. How are you going to handle that?"
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
Ji Nanfeng’s mother has had a bias against Jiang Bei right from the start. Even though Jiang Bei has the Wen Family as relatives, they’re not her own family, and they can’t help Ji Nanfeng in his career. Plus, Jiang Bei is a doctor, a profession that means she’s out early and back late and can’t take care of Ji Nanfeng meticulously. On top of that, she had previously investigated the past between Jiang Bei and Rong Shen, which made her even more displeased.
Fu Shinian had even heard that Ji Nanfeng’s mother wanted Jiang Bei to get an amniocentesis to prove that the child she was carrying was indeed a son of the Ji Family.
