Chapter 517: Chapter 517: Sorry About Before

Throughout the afternoon, several more interviews were conducted sequentially until I finally got a break at 3:30. Right when I returned to my office without sparing time to sip water, my continuously silent phone on the desk suddenly rang. To my surprise, it was Ji Qingluan who I hadn’t contacted for a long while. Hesitating for a moment, I pressed the answer button:

"Qingluan."

"Do you have time? I’m at the entrance of your studio, inviting you for an afternoon tea."

I fell silent for seconds:

"Okay."

I knew exactly why Ji Qingluan came looking for me, and strictly speaking, she and I were never friends. Descriptors like ’love rivals’ and ’business partners’ would more aptly suit us. Yet, there were certain words that needed to be said, and I knew I couldn’t avoid them.

Although my studio wasn’t located at the prime centre of the city, its geographical position was quite decent. Hence, there was an abundance of western restaurants nearby, and Ji Qingluan didn’t go out of her way to select one. We together walked to a nearby establishment, where the clientele was sparse yet adequate, and we settled at a corner seat.

Ji Qingluan ordered a cup of black coffee, while I opted for lemon water.

After the waiter had brought our drinks, Ji Qingluan then said her first words in the shop to me, "I know you probably don’t want to see me."

I looked at her:

"I don’t quite understand what you mean."

"The engagement banquet affair wouldn’t have turned out this way between you and Wen Han if it wasn’t for my brother. Although I wasn’t involved in this matter, it still happened because of me. Both morally and emotionally, I ought to apologize to you."

I smiled faintly but said nothing.

"I know apologies don’t do much, but other than that, I don’t think I have any other way to express myself."

"If it’s just for this, you really shouldn’t have. Even though it was because of you, in the end, it was Ji Qingshan who acted. More than your apology, I’d rather he come and speak to me in person," I stated plainly to Ji Qingluan. "Even though those photos were fake, I can see that he put effort into it."

My words carried a tone of spite, which anyone could discern.

But faced with such a situation, who could truly remain indifferent and assert ’it’s alright, I don’t mind anymore’? Perhaps there are some who can, but I, Su Mu, am not capable of that. If Ji Qingshan were in front of me now, I might have just tossed this glass of lemon water in his face.

Ji Qingluan regarded me:

"When the opportunity presents itself, I’ll make sure my brother apologizes to you personally."

I shook my head, "Let’s not do that. From the very beginning, my brother and I didn’t have much to say to each other. There’s no need for you to worry and mediate. We had few interactions before, and there will be even less in the future. There’s no need for another meeting; I don’t want my mood to worsen."

Ji Qingluan was silent for a few seconds, sipping her coffee lightly while I gazed out the window. The sun was strong outside, and impatience was written on the faces of passersby, which began to irritate me.

"You and Wen Han..."

I turned back to Ji Qingluan, "We broke up."

"Is it because of my brother?"

The instigation for the breakup was indeed Ji Qingshan’s despicable tactics, but that wasn’t the reason. Hence Ji Qingluan posed the question. I didn’t intend to hide it, shaking my head while my fingers gently caressed the rim of the glass:

"No, there were many reasons. Ji Qingshan’s actions merely hastened the end. You shouldn’t feel guilty or responsible. The breakup between me and Wen Han really can’t be blamed on you or Ji Qingshan. I can still see things clearly."

"There’s no turning back?"

I smiled lightly:

"Do you hope there’s a way for us to turn back?"

"I don’t know." Ji Qingluan looked somewhat perplexed. "I was angry when I found out what my brother did. He said that if Wen Han really got engaged to Su Mu, I’d be wasting my entire life on him and would never fall for another man. He couldn’t stand by and see me ruin myself over someone undeserving; that’s why he did it."

I nodded:

"From a brother’s standpoint, he didn’t do anything wrong."

Ji Qingluan smiled and steered away from the topic. No matter with whom she discussed her and Wen Han’s affairs, it was inappropriate to do so with me. Despite the fact that I might not fancy Wen Han nor care, it was still improper. She forced a light smile:

"I don’t know the specifics, but Wen Han has transferred out from the criminal police to begin his political career. He no longer involves himself in frontline work."

I had heard from Wen Han about this, who said it was for Zhou Yaxian. However, I did not feel that Zhou Yaxian truly had any issues on the day we parted, but Wen Han still chose to do it:

"Is Mrs. Wen’s health not good?"

"It’s always been poor." Ji Qingluan said. "I’ve been visiting the Wen Family often lately. The mother’s mental state is getting worse, sometimes she doesn’t even recognize me."

I frowned slightly, but in the end, said nothing more.

After I finished this conversation with Ji Qingluan, I sat quietly in my seat for a long while until Fu Shinian’s call came:

"Where are you?"

Startled, I replied, "Is something the matter?"

Fu Shinian was silent for seconds. "Didn’t we agree to pick up Qiqi together?"

I snapped back to reality and glanced at the time. There was only half an hour left until school let out, so I said, "The western restaurant next to the studio."

"Be there in five minutes."

I quickly got myself together and left the restaurant. As I stood on the roadside, a black Bentley gradually pulled up in front of me. Fu Shinian was driving himself, and he rolled down the window to look at me standing at the curb, saying:

"Get in."

I got into the car, noticeably preoccupied and even forgot to buckle my seat belt. Fu Shinian watched me for a few seconds without asking for reasons and directly leaned over to fasten it for me. I was startled, but then quickly came to my senses:

"Thank you."

"What are you thinking about?"

I shook my head, "Nothing much."

Fu Shinian gave me another look but said nothing more, starting the engine. In fact, ever since I returned to Bishui Yuntian and began this ’act’ with him, Fu Shinian rarely pried into my affairs. He never questioned what I didn’t wish to discuss, providing me ample space and time without making me feel any pressure.

When we arrived at the kindergarten, there were five minutes left until opening. Fu Shinian unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped out of the car:

"I’m going to smoke."

"Okay."

Fu Shinian was indeed smoking, but he wasn’t quite at ease with my demeanor. During this time, he sent a message to the bodyguard following me, and soon after, the reply came: Mrs. Fu had met Ji Qingluan in the restaurant this afternoon.
