Chapter 515: Chapter 515: Prenatal Checkup Results, The Situation is Not Good

Su Mu’s words made Ji Nanfeng stare at her for a few seconds, then he chuckled lightly:

"Is this your way of letting me go?"

Jiang Bei had been silent beside them all along, with a calm attitude that seemed indifferent to the situation. Su Mu could tell that she seemed unwilling to say a word to Ji Nanfeng, so she didn’t feel the need to continue entangling with Ji Nanfeng either. Taking Jiang Bei’s arm, she headed straight for the elevator.

After a series of examinations were completed, they had to wait a while for the results. Su Mu sat with Jiang Bei in the hospital corridor. Ji Nanfeng stood not far away, his face shadowed by the light, unreadable. Su Mu felt that even if he stood right in front of her, she probably still wouldn’t be able to discern anything, so she looked away.

Jiang Bei’s mood was not great that day; she had been mostly silent. Perhaps because of running up and down the stairs, her complexion was a bit off. Just as Su Mu was about to say something, Ji Nanfeng walked over and stood in front of the two. His gaze lightly swept over Jiang Bei’s face and finally settled on Su Mu:

"I’ll go for a smoke."

Su Mu nodded, not saying a word, until Ji Nanfeng’s figure disappeared into the stairwell. Only then did Su Mu turn to Jiang Bei and ask:

"What’s going on with you two?"

A trace of sarcastic laughter emerged from the corner of Jiang Bei’s mouth: "Nothing, same old."

"Xiaobei, my words might not be pleasant to hear, but this isn’t a solution, going on like this. If you want to have a good life, you should talk things out properly with Ji Nanfeng. And if you can’t continue, you should separate sooner rather than later. You’ve never been someone to dilly-dally, so why are you so indecisive about this?"

Hearing those words, Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu, and spoke coolly:

"Susu, do you think I will have a good life after leaving Ji Nanfeng? Don’t forget, aside from him, there’s also Rong Shen out there. You’ve seen Rong Shen’s attitude towards me yourself. I’m afraid the moment I step away from Ji Nanfeng, Rong Shen will come to get me. What am I? What am I in their eyes? Rather than being passed around like a basketball, I would rather settle for this life. That’s all for my life; I don’t ask for more. I just hope that the child can be born safe and sound."

"Rong Shen sought you out?"

Jiang Bei gave a bitter smile: "Perhaps if he didn’t, my days would be a bit easier."

Su Mu wasn’t sure what to say for a moment. After all, she was not Jiang Bei and didn’t share Jiang Bei’s experiences, so she couldn’t fully understand her situation. Hence, any advice she might offer wasn’t really hers to give. But watching Jiang Bei become increasingly dejected, Su Mu felt a growing unease.

She worried that something might happen to Jiang Bei before long.

Half an hour later, when the results were ready, Su Mu asked Jiang Bei to wait in the corridor while she went to get them. When the doctor saw Su Mu, he glanced behind her and noticed she was alone, then spoke:

"Doctor Jiang didn’t come?"

"She’s a bit tired, waiting outside."

The doctor frowned slightly and handed the report to Su Mu: "Some things don’t need me to say – as friends, you should be able to sense them, right?"

Su Mu’s heart tightened:

"Is her condition not good?"

"Even just looking at her, you could tell there are problems. Do you still need a check-up to confirm?" The doctor sighed, "For pregnant women, the most important thing is to be in a good mood. But look at her. Even someone like me who doesn’t interact with Doctor Jiang can tell how assertive and cheerful she used to be. How quickly she’s changed. And now that she’s pregnant, isn’t she afraid of complications?"

Su Mu couldn’t find the words to reply, and the doctor might have felt he was being too stern with someone uninvolved, so he softened his tone:

"The results aren’t good. The placenta is positioned low, the fetus is almost 2 weeks smaller than it should be for the gestational age, and there are signs of threatened miscarriage. The situation is complicated."

Su Mu didn’t quite understand these medical terms, but she could tell from the doctor’s expression that the situation was serious:

"So, what should we do now?"

"Rest well, stay in bed as much as possible, keep your spirits up, eat nutritious food. I will prescribe some medication, but that’s secondary. What’s most important is whether she still wants this baby. If she does, continuing like this is not the way to go."

Su Mu thought that Ji Nanfeng should hear these words, but since he wasn’t there, all she could do was to agree and promise to take good care of Jiang Bei. The doctor didn’t say much more, just sighed and started to prepare the medication. When Su Mu left the office, Jiang Bei was still sitting in the same spot, and Ji Nanfeng had returned, sitting beside her. They seemed not to have communicated, and the atmosphere was so-so.

Seeing Su Mu come out, Ji Nanfeng got up and approached her, asking:

"How is it?"

Su Mu glanced at Jiang Bei and shook her head at Ji Nanfeng: "Not good. The doctor prescribed medication."

Ji Nanfeng frowned slightly, looked at the prescription, but couldn’t understand it. His face showed a flicker of anxiety, but then, as if recalling something, he looked at Su Mu: "You stay with Jiang Bei for a bit, I’ll be back shortly."

After saying that, he took the report and left. Su Mu wanted to stop him, but couldn’t.

At that moment, Su Mu didn’t know how to approach Jiang Bei and tell her what the doctor had just shared. Yet, as difficult as it was, she still had to go over. Unexpectedly, Jiang Bei, with a slight smile and without looking at Su Mu, as if speaking to herself, said:

"The situation is not good, is it? I have a feeling."

Su Mu suddenly became angry. She knew she shouldn’t lose her temper with Jiang Bei at that moment. Nobody had it harder than her, but Su Mu couldn’t help it and said:

"I just want to ask you, do you still want this child or not?"

Jiang Bei was taken aback and, after a long time, nodded: "Of course I do."

"Then pull yourself together. Even if Ji Nanfeng doesn’t take responsibility, and Rong Shen is a jerk, you have to take care of yourself. I know you’re hurting and you have a lot on your mind that needs to be vented, and I’m here for you. You can talk to me. Right now, you’re not alone. You have a child. You say you want him, but he can’t feel it. Even I feel like your current state is just self-destruction."

Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu, and after a few seconds, cracked a small smile:

"It’s not that serious."

"When will it be serious? When the child is gone from you, will you then realize it’s serious? By then, it will be too late."

Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu, her eyes filled with a momentary confusion, then slowly her gaze shifted towards the window at the end of the corridor, and she smiled weakly:

"Susu, this is the first time I’ve seen you like this."

"Xiaobei!" Su Mu grabbed her hand: "If you don’t want a divorce, I won’t force you. Let’s move out; I’ll stay with you in an apartment. Let’s not think about anything and first focus on getting healthier, okay?"
