Chapter 480: Chapter 480: Peace in the Present World, A Single Mask
Ji Qingshan had not been gone from the courtyard for long before receiving a call from Fu Shinian. Ji Qingshan arranged to meet Fu Shinian at a bar.
Fu Shinian, although of high social status and inevitably drawn into social engagements, never liked places like bars, finding them too noisy and rowdy. But Ji Qingshan liked them, so Fu Shinian didn’t suggest another location, and followed him there. When he arrived, Ji Qingshan was already there. The waiter respectfully led him to the door of the private room and invited him in.
Ji Qingshan was a man of integrity. Although his wife was not the woman he loved, and their marriage was one of business convenience, no scandals had emerged since his wedding.
At this moment, Ji Qingshan was the only person in the room, with several bottles of beer on the table in front of him. He hadn’t drunk any, and was leaning back on the sofa, eyes closed, resting. Fu Shinian unbuttoned his suit jacket as he walked over:
"What’s troubling you so much?"
Ji Qingshan slowly opened his eyes:
"Do you still want your wife?"
Fu Shinian was momentarily stunned, then smiled faintly: "When did I ever say I didn’t?"
"Is it that you’re out of the loop? Not aware that she’s getting engaged to Wen Han?"
"There are bodyguards I hired with her around the clock, do you think I wouldn’t know?"
Ji Qingshan was silent for a few seconds, then chuckled:
"I never knew you had such a taste for drama—one woman serving two husbands."
At that comment, Fu Shinian’s face grew more stern, and he snorted lightly:
"Whatever happens between Su Mu and Wen Han is none of your business. Are you so indignant because you fancy Wen Han? It’s rumored you had a long-term lover before your marriage to Mrs. Ji, and you were forced to break up because of a marriage arrangement for business. But just who this person was, remains a mystery to this day. Perhaps we’ve all been focusing on the wrong issue. Perhaps the one you loved was never a woman at all."
Ji Qingshan looked at Fu Shinian:
"You should know I stepped in because of Qingluan."
"Qingluan is not even in a hurry, why are you on edge? Is it her idea?"
"She doesn’t even know."
Fu Shinian let out a light chuckle:
"So, it’s a case of the emperor is not in a hurry, but his eunuchs are?"
Ji Qingshan couldn’t be bothered with Fu Shinian’s teasing. He asked straightforwardly: "I don’t believe that you are unprepared for their engagement party. What are you planning to do?"
"You’re wrong. I indeed have not made any preparations."
Ji Qingshan frowned slightly:
"Su Mu is your wife."
"Yes, she was, and is not now, but will be in the future."
"Based on what I know about you, you wouldn’t just sit and watch as your woman gets engaged to another man."
Fu Shinian smiled slightly:
"Aren’t you here?"
Ji Qingshan suddenly understood: "This is the real reason you told me about Zhou Yaxian’s illness. You want me to mess up the engagement party."
"I’ve already been vile enough in Su Mu’s eyes. Doing anything more wouldn’t benefit me, but you’re different—almost no one would suspect it was you."
"But even if that’s the case, I think Su Mu will assume it was you."
Fu Shinian smiled faintly: "That’s not your concern."
"What if I don’t do it?"
"You will. If you really didn’t want to get involved, you wouldn’t have set aside your business abroad to come back and fight for your sister’s happiness." The bar atmosphere was giving Fu Shinian a headache. He got up, ready to leave, but before he did, there was one thing he didn’t understand and asked Ji Qingshan:
"I admire you fighting for your sister’s happiness, but do you really think Qingluan will be happy with Wen Han? A love won through scheming won’t last."
Ji Qingshan smiled faintly:
"The same question, Su Mu has asked me. You may want to ask her what my response was."
Fu Shinian smiled slightly:
"I’m leaving."
"No need to see you out."
——
Because of Ji Qingshan’s words, Su Mu was distracted while trying on her dresses. Fortunately, Zhou Yaxian did not notice, happily commenting on several outfits. Su Mu went along with it until Wen Han finally spoke up, saying all the outfits were beautiful, and they should just go with his mother’s preference. Only then did Zhou Yaxian stop her endless requests, and Su Mu could catch her breath.
While Zhou Yaxian and the designer discussed details, Su Mu, uninterested, sat down in the living room. Wen Han brought her a glass of water:
"Tired?"
Su Mu glanced at him and shook her head faintly: "I’m fine."
"My mother’s been in much better spirits lately. Maybe she’s been too preoccupied with the engagement party to think about anything else, but it’s been hard on you."
Su Mu smiled slightly and asked:
"Has the doctor been by recently? What did they say?"
"It’s the same, but at least it’s not getting worse."
Su Mu looked at Zhou Yaxian in the distance for a few seconds, then turned her gaze back to Wen Han: "Have you ever thought that our pretense will come to an end sooner or later, and if by then your mother still can’t handle any sort of shock, what will we do?"
Wen Han seemed to have never considered this. Hearing Su Mu’s words, he frowned slightly, but regained his composure after a moment:
"I’ve never thought about this problem. Recently, maybe influenced by my mother, sometimes I feel that everything in front of me isn’t an act, that it’s really happening, that you and I are truly getting engaged."
Su Mu listened quietly, without a word. Wen Han looked at her:
"There won’t be such a day, right?"
Su Mu replaced her response with silence. She didn’t know if there would be such a day. When they both agreed to try, they were clear about their arrangements, but as of now, aside from increasingly exhausting each other, there had been no progress in their feelings. Perhaps if there was a chance to start over, Su Mu wouldn’t have impulsively agreed to Wen Han.
If she hadn’t agreed, perhaps things wouldn’t be so chaotically entangled now.
Wen Han smiled faintly amidst Su Mu’s silence:
"I understand now. Don’t worry, if that day really comes, I won’t make things difficult for you. But since we’ve already deceived everyone, and all the relatives and friends have been notified, telling my mom now that we’re just acting for her sake would only make her condition worse, so I must impose on you a little longer. After the engagement, I’ll find a reason to say we’re not suitable and not proceed to marriage."
Su Mu’s hands tightened on her lap, but in the end she said nothing. She did not know what else she could say under such circumstances.
As she left the Wen Family, Fu Shinian’s call came through. Because of Qiqi, their relationship had improved recently, but as Su Mu felt, everything seemed like an illusion, and at any moment the façade of ’current peace and stability’ could be torn away.
