Chapter 479: Chapter 479: What Can You Do If I Don’t Want To
Zhou Yaxian was discharged from the hospital, but she didn’t stop preparing for the engagement. People from the wedding company came to her home every day to discuss the specifics. However, Su Mu rarely showed up anymore. At first, she would go once a day, but gradually it became once every two days, even every three days.
She seemed to be avoiding it, but she was genuinely busy. The studio in Jiangcheng City had completely moved to Shen City, and she was occupied with setting up the studio, so she seldom went there.
That day, close to quitting time, Lin Ning appeared in Su Mu’s office:
"Sister Su, it’s been three days since we moved here. You said you wouldn’t take any more shoots until we’re settled, but we’ve been getting inquiries every day, my phone is almost blowing up. I wanted to ask, when do we start taking them?"
Su Mu glanced at the date. There were five days left until Zhou Yaxian’s engagement announcement day, and she probably wouldn’t be idle during those days, so she replied:
"You can start taking bookings now, but I guess I won’t be available for shooting until a week later. You have to communicate this properly with the clients to avoid unnecessary trouble."
"Okay," Lin Ning answered, then added: "What about the shoot in Maldives that’s scheduled for a week from now?"
Su Mu looked at her calendar. It was three days after the engagement: "Proceed as planned."
Lin Ning acknowledged and left. Su Mu checked the time and started to pack up for the day, but at that moment, she received a call from Zhou Yaxian. Just looking at the phone already gave her a headache. She had looked up what Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was like but seemed like Zhou Yaxian’s symptoms didn’t quite match.
The doctor had said everyone’s symptoms are different. He thought Zhou Yaxian’s current symptoms were avoidance and numbness, refusing to think about things that upset her and doing things that made herself happy to distract her attention.
Su Mu asked:
"This thing she is doing now will inevitably end one day. What should we do then?"
The doctor said:
"She might become lucid, or she might once again fall into an emotional extreme. Until that day comes, no one can say for sure what situation we will face."
Actually, Su Mu had been thinking that if, after the so-called engagement, Zhou Yaxian would return to her initial state, it would be better not to deceive her from the beginning than to let her continue being in the dark. But it was Wen Han’s decision, and she had also agreed to it. Besides, there was no turning back now.
Picking up the phone, Zhou Yaxian’s cheery voice came through the speaker:
"Susu, are you off work yet?"
"Almost, does Auntie need something?"
"I’ve had the dresses for you and Wen Han shipped over from Paris. Come to the compound after work, let’s try them on together."
Su Mu wanted to refuse, but considering that she hadn’t visited Zhou Yaxian in three days and her mood had become unstable after not seeing her for three days before, constantly asking if Wen Han had broken up with Susu, this time Su Mu agreed:
"Okay, I’ll come over after work."
Fu Shinian, since that night, had never said a word about Su Mu and Wen Han’s engagement, nor had he taken any action, but Su Mu never let her guard down, nor did she believe that Fu Shinian would just let things be. She always felt that he was plotting something, waiting for the perfect moment to deliver a fatal blow.
However, Su Mu would not ask proactively, because even if she did, Fu Shinian would definitely not tell her.
When Su Mu drove to the compound, she happened to run into Ji Qingshan driving out. Su Mu hadn’t planned to greet him, but Ji Qingshan boldly stopped his car at the entrance of the compound, blocking her way in. Su Mu rolled down the window, and Ji Qingshan did the same, smiling slightly:
"Miss Su here for the dress fitting?"
"And what brings Mr. Ji here?"
"Nothing special, I was abroad until recently and hadn’t heard the news from home. I just found out about Mrs. Wen’s illness when I returned, and came to visit. Sadly, my sister kept the news of your engagement hidden from me; had I not come today, I might still be unaware."
Su Mu smiled faintly:
"With such a good relationship between Wen Family and Ji Family, you would surely have been notified, Mr. Ji must have been too busy."
"That’s true, I am busy, but I do have time to talk to you." Ji Qingshan’s smile gradually faded: "The dresses are already in the house, they’re not going to run off on their own, are they?"
Knowing she couldn’t avoid the conversation, Su Mu agreed.
Ji Qingshan drove off, parking not far away, and Su Mu also backed her car up a distance, then turned off the engine and walked towards Ji Qingshan.
The two stood beside the car, Ji Qingshan lit a cigarette, and looked at Su Mu with a slight smile:
"You obviously didn’t take my words to heart last time."
"How much of what I said did Mr. Ji take to heart then?"
"You’re set on becoming Mrs. Wen?"
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, then slowly said:
"Mr. Ji, since you’re here to visit someone ill, you should know about Auntie’s condition. She can’t tolerate any slightest upset right now. Even if I don’t want to get engaged, what can I do?"
Hearing this, Ji Qingshan looked at Su Mu in silence for a few seconds before slowly saying:
"So you’re saying you don’t want this engagement?"
Su Mu smiled, but did not directly answer the question.
"If you’re unwilling, why force yourself?" Ji Qingshan asked, "If you’re going to break up with Wen Han, it’s inevitable whether sooner or later, and the Wen Family will no longer have any connection with you. You can’t lie to Auntie forever; if you get engaged and Auntie’s illness doesn’t improve, will you proceed with the marriage by mistake?"
Su Mu was taken aback and felt that Ji Qingshan made sense.
"A person’s illness is the doctor’s concern; take medicine if it’s needed, seek psychological counseling if required. Keeping a patient living in an illusion, do you think that’s for her own good?" Ji Qingshan paused, then continued, "I don’t know what you’re really thinking, but I hope you back out now, before things become completely unmanageable."
After saying this, Ji Qingshan prepared to leave, but perhaps feeling he wasn’t clear enough, he stopped before opening the car door:
"Miss Su, consider what I’ve said. If you and Wen Han can’t put an end to this farce promptly, I don’t mind stepping in to help."
Su Mu looked at Ji Qingshan:
"And what about Auntie? The doctor said she can’t handle any more stress."
"You’re going to break up with Wen Han sooner or later, and shock is inevitable. Rather than waiting until Auntie has fully accepted your marital status, it’s better to let her face reality now. After all, her illness hasn’t been long, and in many ways, it’s still not too late. But if you continue to deceive her, when the truth comes out eventually, I think it won’t be good for either Auntie or yourselves."
