Chapter 47: Is it so hard to ask for my help?
Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Is it so hard to ask for my help?
Su Mu didn’t want to add fuel to the fire in a relationship already fractured, and fortunately, Fu Shinian had no desire to continue fighting. After uttering that hurtful remark, he left the bathroom. Soon after, Auntie Wang climbed the stairs and carefully helped Su Mu out.
Su Mu had dinner in her room that night. She never got to enjoy the reunion dinner she had promised the old lady. Auntie Wang said that after a big fight with Fu Shinian, Su Shiyue had run away from home. Hearing this, Su Mu felt somewhat guilty—not because she thought it was undeserved, but because today was after all the Mid-Autumn Festival. She should have shown some restraint, rather than quibble over a fleeting moment.
Did Grandma blame her, feel any regret?
A full moon rose outside the window. Su Mu sat on the sofa, gazing out at the night scene and momentarily lost in thought. She had originally agreed with Wen Han that she would start working after the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, but the injury to her foot was unexpected. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to walk in two days.
Perhaps she should notify Wen Han in advance.
Only her phone wasn’t on her...
Su Mu sighed.
When Fu Shinian came in, Su Mu was surprised. She had assumed that the man before her would, like every other displeasure, not return for the night or let her see him for several days. His appearance now caught her off guard, and the way he went to the wardrobe to fetch his pajamas suggested he didn’t plan on going out again.
Su Mu shifted her gaze, still pretending that he wasn’t in the room.
Fu Shinian showered very quickly, his hair still damp as he emerged from the bathroom and went straight to bed. He sat propped up against the headboard, looking at his phone. Whatever he saw made his brows crease slightly with an unhappy expression.
Su Mu also wanted to shower, but it wasn’t convenient for her.
After agonizing for a few minutes, she finally spoke up:
"Could you help me find my phone?"
Fu Shinian lazily looked up: "Haven’t you been acting as if I don’t exist? What now? You remember me when you need something?"
Su Mu: "It’s fine if it’s inconvenient."
"Indeed, it’s quite inconvenient."
Another ten minutes passed, and Su Mu was gradually getting sleepy. However, she had not yet taken a shower, and the bedclothes she had been using on the sofa had been put away in the wardrobe that morning. Whether it was to sleep or to shower, it seemed she would need Fu Shinian’s help, but she didn’t want it.
Carefully, she got up from the sofa and hopped gingerly toward the bathroom. Fu Shinian’s gaze followed her the whole time before he finally spoke:
"Grandma’s room is just downstairs. Do you think she’s asleep now to let you hop about like this?"
Su Mu hesitated for a few seconds: "Then please call Auntie Wang up here."
"Auntie Wang is here to take care of the old lady, not to look after you."
Su Mu fell silent, standing still, torn between moving forward and retreating.
In the end, Fu Shinian ran out of patience and spoke coldly:
"Is it really that hard for you to ask for my help?"
Su Mu stayed silent, not looking at him or making any move, when just as Fu Shinian thought she would not reply, she said slowly:
"If I ask you, will you agree?"
She had asked before, but whether he agreed or not depended on his mood. If he was in a good mood, he might agree, but then Su Mu would still have to endure his ridicule. If he was in a bad mood, even if it was something very important to Su Mu, he wouldn’t spare it another glance.
Today, Su Mu didn’t speak, truly just not wanting to guess his mood anymore.
She was also tired, utterly exhausted.
Fu Shinian’s brows knitted slightly in what appeared to be anger, so in the next second, he turned off the lights and laid down in bed, completely ignoring whether Su Mu, inconvenient as she was with her injured foot, would bump into something standing there, leaving her to fend for herself.
Su Mu wasn’t surprised; she laughed mockingly at herself in the dark, clenching her fists tightly.
After a few minutes of silence, she could only turn around by memory, slowly planning to return to the sofa to sit down. Without a bath or a quilt, it was fine; she obviously couldn’t stand there all night long. She had to at least find somewhere to sit.
But just as she turned, the man on the bed suddenly sat up, turned the light on again, and looked at Su Mu struggling to move. Suppressing the anger in his chest, he got out of bed, walked briskly toward her, and scooped her up, stepping toward the bathroom.
"Shower or use the toilet?"
"Shower."
Fu Shinian walked toward the shower, carefully putting her down, and then began to undress her. As he expected, she stopped his movement in the next second. Fu Shinian did not continue, nor did he shake off her hand. He just looked at her:
"Are you sure you don’t need my help? Can you manage alone? If you nod, I’ll leave right now. If something happens here, I won’t lie for you to Grandma. I’ll call an ambulance to take you to the hospital. Are you sure worsening your foot injury won’t affect your upcoming work?"
Su Mu looked up at him, not understanding how he could know so thoroughly.
Seeing what she was thinking, Fu Shinian curved his lips slightly: "Wen Han has been looking for a tutor for his son for not just a day or two. Did you think that would remain a secret?"
"You investigated me?"
With a light snort, Fu Shinian said: "Investigate? Your social circle is so simple that I can see right through you at a glance. Do I need to expend energy to investigate? Is someone at Wen Han’s level someone you can just meet if you wish? Apart from work, I can’t think of a second possibility. Or is it that you really have something unspeakable going on with him?"
Su Mu closed her eyes:
"Fu Shinian, you know well there’s only work between him and me. Was it necessary to say that last bit to hurt me? Even if I ate out with him alone today, compared to the things you’ve done, I’m aboveboard."
"So you finally said it. I thought you wouldn’t bring it up." Arms crossed, Fu Shinian watched her: "What else would you like to say? Ask me all at once to avoid being awkward like today; it’s distressing to watch."
"Would you tell me?"
Fu Shinian chuckled, "It depends on my mood."
Su Mu clenched her teeth:
"Did something happen between you and Qin Nianwan?"
"Do you care? Your body can no longer allow my touch, so whether something happened or not, it seems like it can’t change that fact. What? You can’t fulfill your duty as a wife, yet you expect me to remain chaste? Which man could tolerate that?"
"It’s just temporary..." Su Mu felt truly at fault in this matter—although most of the reason for her condition was probably caused by Fu Shinian, but when it comes to a man’s dignity, Su Mu couldn’t bring herself to voice it.
"Since it’s temporary, then hurry up and get better. I’m not sure how long I can hold out!"
The meaning behind these words became instantly clear to Su Mu, and her lips involuntarily curved into a smile:
"Then why did you bring her back today?"
Fu Shinian slightly furrowed his brow, clearly not wanting to answer, and directly changed the topic:
"Are you going to take a bath or not?"
——
The next day, when Su Mu opened her eyes in bed, Fu Shinian was no longer in the room.
They had slept in the same bed last night. After a whole day of unpleasantness, Fu Shinian had dispelled all her negative emotions with his casual words. He hadn’t provided any substantial evidence, but whatever he said, Su Mu believed.
Even though, that wasn’t fair.
After having breakfast in her room, Su Mu suggested going back to Bishui Yuntian. After all, it was very inconvenient at the old house. Auntie Wang needed to take care of Grandma all the time, and she couldn’t always find Fu Shinian for everything, even though he had indeed stayed in the bedroom to deal with work matters and hadn’t left since breakfast.
But, in the end, Su Mu’s suggestion was rejected by Fu Shinian: "Let’s go back tomorrow. Auntie Lin will come over to take care of you later."
Su Mu was puzzled:
"Is there something wrong with Grandma?"
Fu Shinian moved his gaze away from the computer and looked at Su Mu:
"Tomorrow is Shiyue’s birthday. I’ve prepared a party for her."
Su Mu looked at him, silent, but Fu Shinian smiled slightly:
"What? Reluctant?"
"No, even if her relationship with me isn’t good, she is still your sister, the young miss of the Fu family."
"Good, that you understand this."
Fu Shiyue came back in the evening. Su Mu didn’t know if it was Grandma or Fu Shinian who had said something to her, but she actually stood in front of Su Mu and apologized solemnly. This somewhat shocked Su Mu, as ever since the first time she met Fu Shiyue, she had never seen a pleasant expression on her face.
Fu Shinian sat on the sofa, tapping on his laptop. Hearing the apology, he glanced at Fu Shiyue and said:
"Have you notified all your friends and classmates?"
Fu Shiyue responded in a soft voice:
"Yes."
"Hmm."
Su Mu had been silent the whole time, and it seemed Fu Shiyue didn’t care about her forgiveness. Just when Su Mu thought this pretense could end there, Fu Shiyue spoke up again:
"Brother, can sister-in-law attend tomorrow? Everyone really wants to meet the young madam of the Fu family."
Fu Shinian looked at Fu Shiyue and smiled faintly:
"What for her to attend? To show up limping and embarrass herself? As for your friends, there will always be a time to meet them."
Fu Shiyue didn’t say anything else and turned to leave. Su Mu watched her leave and felt there was something different about her, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
After Fu Shiyue left the room, Su Mu started browsing on her iPad, and the sound of entering the Weibo page caused Fu Shinian to pause his typing for a moment. After several seconds of silence, he resumed his work and asked casually:
"You use Weibo?"
Surprised that he had noticed, she thought he was just asking casually and nodded:
"I browse occasionally."
"I’ve recently registered an account too. What’s your Weibo name? I’ll follow you."
Su Mu was about to agree, but then hesitated, remembering the posts she had shared. After a few seconds, she said:
"I just browse around, and I don’t really post anything. You don’t have to follow me."
Fu Shinian said nothing more and continued working. Su Mu visibly breathed a sigh of relief, but what she didn’t know was that Fu Shinian had known her Weibo account for two years already. She had shared a lot more than nothing—she had posted many surprising things.
Whenever he thought of it, Fu Shinian felt a surge of anger.
