Chapter 43: Seeing Wen Han Again

Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Seeing Wen Han Again

Although Su Mu said it was work-related, after Su Mu went upstairs, the old lady still glared at Fu Shinian with dissatisfaction. She probably felt that if it hadn’t been for Fu Shinian bringing Qin Nianwan over today, Su Mu wouldn’t have gone out even if there was a major issue.

Fu Shinian was helpless, but he could only endure it.

After changing his clothes, Su Mu came downstairs and said goodbye to everyone, Qiao Yu stood up from the sofa:

"I was just going to head back to the hospital, I’ll take you."

Su Mu looked at him, "Aren’t you taking the day off today?"

"There’s a critically ill patient who needs constant attention. Although there are nurses there, I’m still not at ease. Today being Mid-Autumn Festival, I originally planned to visit Grandma and then return to the hospital. Since you’re also going out, I can go with you."

Actually, Qiao Yu too felt wronged. It was plainly Fu Shinian who had told him that Auntie Wang was making dumplings today, inviting him to come and eat. Knowing that he had always found Auntie Wang’s dumplings to be a great delicacy of this world, it was unfortunate that just one glance from him at the beginning made Qiao Yu realize he wouldn’t be eating there after all.

The old lady was quite satisfied with this arrangement:

"Since Shinian isn’t sending you, then go with Ah Yu, that way I can be at ease."

Su Mu had nothing more to say and left the old house together with Qiao Yu.

For a long time after the car left the old house, the cabin was very quiet. Qiao Yu sneaked a few glances at Su Mu and finally broke the silence:

"If you don’t tell me the destination soon, I can only take you to the hospital."

Su Mu then came back to his senses, looked at the scenery outside the car window, smiled apologetically, and announced the address.

It was a Western restaurant, one Qiao Yu had been to before.

"On the Mid-Autumn Festival, who has the leisure to invite you to a Western meal? Could it be a handsome guy?"

With such an evident lead-in, Su Mu couldn’t help but respond, he lightly said:

"He is very handsome."

Wen Han truly had a striking appearance. Even if placed in the entertainment industry, where attractive people abound, he would stand out. Additionally, his years of military discipline gave him a masculinity that many of today’s young stars couldn’t match.

Yet it was just three simple words, but upon hearing them Qiao Yu almost failed to grip the steering wheel properly. He looked at Su Mu, anxious:

"Su Mu, you’re not actually going on a date with a man, are you?"

Su Mu just smiled lightly:

"Is that not allowed?"

Fu Shinian had brought his past love to their home, and she was just going to have dinner and discuss work with her student’s parent. What was so wrong about that? Compared to what Fu Shinian had done, Su Mu’s actions seemed entirely aboveboard.

"I know Shinian went a bit too far today, but he wasn’t trying to upset you. He had his reasons. Don’t take it to heart; he may be in the wrong, but you shouldn’t seek revenge by going out with other men." Qiao Yu grew anxious, his words tumbling out:

"There are many ways to get back at a man. You are so smart; why choose the least rational one? How about we cancel that man and find a place to have a good meal, so I can give you some advice?"

Su Mu, sitting in the passenger seat, smiled faintly:

"Qiao Yu, instead of advising me not to have any dealings with other men, why don’t you persuade Fu Shinian to stop behaving so childishly? If you stop me once, you won’t be able to stop me a second time."

"Besides, my going out today wasn’t just to annoy him; I really had business. But if I really followed your suggestion to cancel on that man and went to eat with you, knowing what you know about Fu Shinian, what do you think his reaction would be?"

This made Qiao Yu think of the several past misunderstandings where Fu Shinian thought he was interested in Su Mu, immediately he abandoned his prior suggestion:

"Then, shall we just go back? We might still catch Auntie Wang’s dumplings."

Su Mu glanced at him, giving a faint smile:

"Turn right up ahead, thank you."

Qiao Yu: "..."

Indeed, from Su Mu’s perspective, what she had done was beyond reproach. Setting aside whether she really had business to attend to, even if she had just looked for an excuse to leave the old house, it was only natural. After all, which magnanimous woman could tolerate seeing her husband with his first love right before her eyes?

With this in mind, Qiao Yu stopped trying to persuade her and directly drove Su Mu to her destination.

Su Mu thanked him and got out of the car, walking into the Western restaurant. Yet Qiao Yu didn’t leave; he watched as Su Mu entered, then proceeded to a window-side seat. The man rose from his seat to pull a chair out for her, displaying perfect gentlemanly behavior.

Qiao Yu felt that Fu Shinian had met his match.

After all, given the choice between warmth and coldness, any normal person would choose warmth. Perhaps some are misguided to think coldness holds more charm, but when one day that coldness can also hurt, they’ll eventually remember the goodness of warmth.

Fu Shinian, acting all day as if Su Mu owed him hundreds of millions, could hardly be expected to display courtesy, politeness, or consideration; but looking at the man Su Mu was meeting today, even though the table manners were just Western dining etiquette, the respect offered to Su Mu was palpable even to an outsider.

Qiao Yu decided to go back and thoroughly provoke Fu Shinian, but as he started the car to leave, he felt there was something familiar about that man, yet no matter how hard he thought, he couldn’t recall who it was.

In the end, he could only give up and leave the restaurant.

In the restaurant, Wen Han pulled out a chair for Su Mu:

"Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival, and yet I have asked Miss Su to come out and talk about work. I truly apologize, as my only day off is today, which has interrupted your family reunion. I’m sorry."

Su Mu thanked him and took a seat:

"It’s okay, I went back to my old house yesterday to spend time with my family. They won’t mind that I’m out for a while today."

Wen Han handed the menu to Su Mu: "I’m not sure what Miss Su prefers, but Shaoyuan recommended Western cuisine, I hope you don’t mind."

"Not at all, I really like it." Su Mu smiled faintly, but in the end, she only ordered a salad and then handed back the menu to the waiter. Wen Han was looking at the menu when he heard her and glanced at her:

"Miss Su, are you on a diet?"

"No, I just ate at home before coming, and I’m not hungry now."

Wen Han didn’t insist and ordered his own meal.

After the waiter left, Wen Han didn’t bother with polite small talk and directly began inquiring:

"Miss Su, I have received the information you sent over, and everything seems very suitable. Plus, Shaoyuan likes you. I think asking you to be Shaoyuan’s tutor might be over-qualifying you, but I still have a few questions I’d like to ask."

Su Mu: "Mr. Wen, there’s no need for formality, you can simply call me Su Mu, and feel free to ask any questions."

"In that case, you needn’t address me as Mr. Wen either; I am a straightforward military man, and such genteel titles make me somewhat uncomfortable."

Su Mu smiled faintly, as if to agree.

"I saw on your resume that you majored in Photography and also studied Chinese Literature, but after graduation, you worked in a hotel. May I know why?"

Su Mu paused for a few seconds, smiled slowly, and looked at Wen Han:

"Do you want the truth?"

Wen Han was slightly taken aback and looked at Su Mu: "Of course."

"For money." Seeing Wen Han looking at her, Su Mu added:

"Actually, no one wants their four years of university to be wasted. I also had plans to start my own studio after graduation to do what I loved, but then my family faced a crisis. My father’s hotel went bankrupt, and he couldn’t cope with the fact and chose to jump from a building to his death. The only thing he was concerned about was the business he had dedicated his life to. I too considered whether choosing a path at odds with my dreams was right, but reality didn’t give me a choice."

"My mother suffered a stroke and collapsed, my father’s various loans kept piling up, and comparing the meager salary of an intern photographer to the high salary of a hotel manager, it seemed I could only choose the latter. Also, the hotel I worked for, although it changed its name and owner, was indeed my father’s painstaking effort. Working there felt like fulfilling a filial duty."

I shouldn’t have said so much.

This was something Su Mu suddenly realized after speaking, the person sitting opposite her, Wen Han, although this was their second meeting, was essentially still a stranger, and she really had no need to tell him her true situation.

The words she had just spoken sounded all too much like the sob stories often heard on variety shows.

And Su Mu herself certainly didn’t need those.

"Sorry, I spoke too much."

Wen Han looked at her, "It’s okay."

Although she tried to mask her emotions, Wen Han, with his background as a Scout, could still easily discern her dejection, although he didn’t know what it was about, and of course, it wasn’t his place to probe further.

The moment of silence was broken when the waiter came over to serve the meals.

Su Mu found that the Wen Han sitting in front of her was not at all like the man she had imagined. He was cutting his steak methodically, resembling a cultured gentleman, entirely unlike the ’rough military man’ he described himself as. Su Mu thought that those who lived in the military would be unrefined and brash, but the Wen Han before her seemed someone who truly enjoyed life.

"Am I not what you expected?"

Wen Han suddenly spoke up, catching Su Mu slightly off guard. He clearly wasn’t looking at her, yet he seemed to perceive clearly her surprise.

"You’re just not like the military men I imagined."

Wen Han looked up at her, his gaze intense:

"You also aren’t quite what I imagined."

Su Mu didn’t continue the topic and spoke instead:

"You mentioned earlier that you had a few more questions for me, but you’ve only asked one so far."

"There’s another." Wen Han put down his cutlery and leaned back in his chair:

"Shaoyuan is different from other children who have their parents around; I’m not often at home, and my parents have their careers, so I hope you can pick him up from kindergarten every day at 4:30 p.m. and stay until he goes to sleep, which won’t be too late since he has a good bedtime routine, at 8:30 p.m. The Wen Family will arrange a driver for you, so you won’t be in any danger."

"As for Saturdays and Sundays, you only need to perform your regular tutoring duties if my parents are home. But if they’re at work, I hope you can accompany him."
