Chapter 42: Chapter 42 I Will Not Divorce

After Qin Nianwan and Su Shiyue left, the old lady also rose from her seat and glared at Fu Shinian discontentedly:

"Come with me!"

Fu Shinian obediently stood up and, before leaving the living room, glanced towards the kitchen. However, he did not see Su Mu coming out from there and had no idea what she was doing at that moment.

In the old lady’s bedroom, as soon as Fu Shinian had just closed the door, a walking stick struck his back, but he did not move at all and took the blow. He then turned around to look at the old lady’s furious expression and tried to appease her with concern:

"Grandma, you can hit me or scold me if you’re unhappy with what I did, but could you please not be so hard on yourself? Don’t get too upset."

"You knew this would anger me but still decided to bring her back. Aren’t you trying to provoke me? You’re just trying to kill me with anger!"

Fu Shinian wanted to help the old lady to the sofa by the window but she was disdainful of his touch and shrugged him off, choosing to walk over and sit down by herself. Fu Shinian sighed and followed to stand beside her, but he did not dare to sit next to the old lady. Instead, he knelt on one knee on the carpet beside the sofa.

"I’ve noticed there seems to be some trouble between you and Susu recently, and I haven’t interfered because I trust you. I trust you to manage your marital relationship well. But is this how you treat the trust I place in you and Susu’s tolerance towards you?"

Fu Shinian looked at the old lady:

"Grandma, I didn’t bring her back to upset you intentionally. How could I bear to?"

"So that was intentional to upset Su Mu?"

Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds because this reason indeed played a part in his actions, yet it was not the whole story. However, his silence undoubtedly appeared as an admission in the eyes of the old lady, and she looked at Fu Shinian with a hint of disappointment:

"Shinian, you are almost 30, not three. How can you do such childish and hurtful things? How did grandma teach you all these years?"

"Grandma, you know I have doubts about what happened back then." Fu Shinian began to explain, "I always feel that person will come looking for Qin Nianwan, so right now I cannot stop interacting with her and asked her to come over. I admit my approach might be inappropriate, but only by doing this, will that person feel that Qin Nianwan might get close to the Fu family again, and she might make a move."

The old lady paused for a moment, seemingly in disbelief as she looked at Fu Shinian:

"Are you still investigating that incident?"

"I have to."

"You child..." The old lady looked at him with distressed eyes: "What good does digging up the past do for you? It is undoubtedly like reopening a wound that has just healed and throwing salt on it. You might not care about hurting yourself, but you were raised by my very own hands, how can I just watch you hurt yourself?"

"Grandma." Fu Shinian looked up at her: "Isn’t that what you and grandpa taught me from a young age? To live a life with understanding?"

The old lady, watching such a Fu Shinian, suddenly didn’t know what to say anymore. Standing in his position, she knew what he was doing was not wrong, but thinking of Su Mu, she still felt that Su Mu was being treated unfairly.

"You brought Qin Nianwan back because of the past, but does Su Mu know? What would she think? I don’t believe you didn’t see how she looked just now. It breaks my heart, such a good child, how can you bear to hurt her time and again?"

Fu Shinian chuckled softly, offering no reply.

The relationship between him and Su Mu was never one-sided but rather a double-edged sword; he hurt her to some extent, but she was never lenient with herself either.

"Tell grandma the truth today, what exactly do you think of Su Mu? Two years of married life have passed if you really don’t care at all, then say it early to let her go and stop wasting her youth."

Upon hearing this, Fu Shinian looked at the old lady and smiled slightly:

"Doesn’t grandma really like Su Mu? Can you bear to let her go?"

"Of course, I can’t bear to let her go, so I’ve decided if you really divorce Su Mu, I’ll take her as a granddaughter. Such a good child, I can’t stand to see her mistreated."

Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds before softly stating:

"I will not divorce her."

When Fu Shinian walked out of the old lady’s room, he took out his mobile phone and dialed Ji Nanfeng’s number. Today, he had Qin Nianwan come over but also called Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu. However, these two were a bit too slow; he hadn’t seen them yet.

As soon as the call connected, Fu Shinian spoke directly:

"Where are you? How come you’re not here yet?"

"Why are you in such a hurry? Is your family the only one celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival? Don’t I need to have a meal with my mother? For your sake, we even moved our lunch to ten in the morning. Don’t rush me, or I won’t come at all and you can handle this mess on your own."

Fu Shinian ignored him and hung up the phone. After a few seconds of silence, he took steps towards the kitchen but hadn’t approached yet when Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu’s car entered the yard. Fu Shinian glanced at the kitchen and eventually decided not to continue that way, turning instead to welcome the two friends.

Su Shiyue and Qin Nianwan had also returned from their walk outside and five of them met in the courtyard. Ji Nanfeng naturally looked over at Qin Nianwan and smiled slightly:

"It’s been a long time since Nianwan has been to the old house, hasn’t it?"

"Yes, two years."

Qiao Yu: "The relationship between Yueyue and Nianwan is still as good as ever."

Su Shiyue, arm in arm with Qin Nianwan, looked proudly at Qiao Yu:

"Naturally, our friendship is as strong as metal."

Ji Nanfeng looked up at the sun overhead:

"It’s August already, how come the sun still felt like it’s owed money and is intent on roasting everyone to death? Come on, let’s go inside. I haven’t seen grandma in a long time."

Qiao Yu patted Fu Shinian’s shoulder and, along with Ji Nanfeng, took the lead and walked inside. Su Shiyue also seized the chance to slip away, leaving only Fu Shinian and Qin Nianwan in the lively courtyard. Fu Shinian glanced at her:

"Let’s go inside."

"Shinian," Qin Nianwan called out to him, somewhat apprehensively.

Fu Shinian turned back, "What’s the matter?"

"It seems Grandmother doesn’t welcome me much; should I leave first?"

"If you want to leave, I won’t stop you, but you need to think about it—are you saying you never want to come to the old house from now on?"

This remark by Fu Shinian caused Qin Nianwan a moment of astonishment, and when she realized what his words implied, she looked at Fu Shinian incredulously:

"Shinian..."

But Fu Shinian didn’t explain further, simply stating:

"I’m going inside now, do as you please."

When Fu Shinian and Qin Nianwan entered the living room, Su Mu was just helping the old lady out of the room. Seeing Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu, the old lady’s face bloomed with joy. Since Ji Nanfeng was especially good at entertaining her, the old lady was soon laughing uncontrollably.

Su Mu stood quietly by the old lady’s side. Seeing her in a good mood, she couldn’t help but smile:

"Grandmother, let’s sit down and talk."

"Okay." The old lady looked at them, "Nanfeng, Yu, come, sit down quickly."

In the living room, besides the family, were three guests, but the old lady only greeted Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu. She didn’t even glance at Qin Nianwan, who stood next to Fu Shinian. Qin Nianwan would normally have minded, but after hearing what Fu Shinian had just said to her, she felt much relieved.

Being ignored now didn’t matter. As long as she had Fu Shinian, she would always have a day when she’d be welcomed. Even if acceptance wasn’t possible, she was content as the man beside her, not the old lady in front of her, could give her everything she desired.

Su Mu’s phone rang just a few moments after everyone sat down, creating a harmonious atmosphere. She apologetically glanced at everyone and rose to answer the call by a floor-to-ceiling window. Fu Shinian’s gaze gradually followed her.

He was acutely aware of Su Mu ignoring him; from the moment they entered until now, she had been polite and cheerful towards everyone else, performing like a qualified and competent hostess, yet she hadn’t spared a glance in his direction.

Lost in thought, Qiao Yu nudged him with his elbow, whispering:

"I can tell, despite Su Mu showing no overt signs and having no faults, she is truly angry this time, not even glancing at you. I feel sorry for you for three seconds."

Fu Shinian snorted softly:

"Do I need her to look at me?"

"Oh, so you don’t need it. I thought you were always following Su Mu with your eyes, focusing attention on her. I assumed you cared."

Fu Shinian glanced sideways at him, and Qiao Yu, heeding his warning, shut his mouth.

Still, Qiao Yu’s words resonated with Fu Shinian, who indeed felt his behavior was out of the ordinary. She wasn’t important to him; he had merely brought Qin Nianwan back with him, so why bother observing her reactions?

But Fu Shinian soon felt relieved, finding a reason for his actions: he wanted to see Su Mu angry.

While bringing Qin Nianwan back wasn’t solely to upset Su Mu, seeing her now reminded him of yesterday’s argument and her deception. If his actions could anger her, he guessed he would feel happy and satisfied.

However, he hadn’t expected Su Mu to be able to keep her composure, treating him as if he was invisible the entire time.

After finishing her call, Su Mu stood at the window for a few seconds before returning to the living room, where she, instead of sitting down, apologetically addressed the old lady:

"Grandmother, I need to step out for a bit; I probably can’t join everyone for the meal."

Fu Shinian glanced up at her.

Thinking she was upset and unable to restrain herself, the old lady began to persuade her, "Why does it have to be now? Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the family should be together."

Su Mu smiled:

"I know, but the other person is only available today. It wouldn’t be good if I don’t go."

To prevent the grandmother from worrying further, Su Mu added:

"I’ll try to come back this afternoon, so I can still have a reunion dinner with Grandma in the evening."

With the conversation having reached this point, the old lady said nothing further and looked at Fu Shinian:

"Go send Susu off."

Fu Shinian hadn’t even stood up when Su Mu flatly refused, "No need, I’ll just take a cab."

After that, she glanced apologetically at everyone, whispered ’excuse me,’ and headed upstairs, still not sparing Fu Shinian a glance.

Watching her ascend the stairs, Fu Shinian thought about the ’Mr. Wen’ he heard her call during her phone conversation. If he hadn’t misheard, that should have been the address.
