Chapter 404: The Little Traitor by Her Side
Chapter 404: Chapter 404: The Little Traitor by Her Side
"The night was dangerous, so dangerous that Su Mu felt if it weren’t for his concerns that Qiqi was sleeping in another room, he might have really taken himself there and then.
But in the end, he remained rational; still, he didn’t let go of Su Mu, hugging her tightly and pressing her hard against himself, and brazenly said by her ear, "Su Mu, if not today, it will be tomorrow, being Wen Han’s girlfriend holds no threat over me whatsoever."
That very night, Su Mu made preparations to return to Shen City, packing up overnight once her work in Jiangcheng City was nearly complete. Her recent work involved a photoshoot for the Ji Qingluan Foundation; Su Mu had originally planned to go there directly from Jiangcheng City. But now, with Fu Shinian behaving this way, she had totally lost the nerve. Also considering the matters with Jiang Bei, she decided that once Qiqi woke up the next morning, they would head back to Shen City.
What Su Mu couldn’t have calculated was that Fu Shinian would share the same idea. As she hastily finished breakfast and left the apartment with her luggage, the door opposite suddenly opened, and there stood Fu Shinian. He showed no surprise at the sight of Su Mu, one hand holding Qiqi and the other pulling a suitcase, and casually greeted her:
"Morning."
Qiqi: "Fu Shinian, good morning."
Fu Shinian gave a slight smile, looking at Su Mu:
"Going back to Shen City? I am too. Let’s go together."
Su Mu: "..."
"What? You don’t believe me?"
"It’s not that I don’t believe it, just that I don’t believe things can be such a coincidence." Su Mu eyed Fu Shinian: "How did you know I was going back to Shen City today?"
"Isn’t Jiang Bei your best friend? Naturally, you’d be worried when you can’t reach her. Plus..." Fu Shinian smiled faintly: "Wanting to avoid spending more time alone with me here, might help alleviate some of the guilt you feel towards Wen Han."
Su Mu sneered in a way that did not reach her eyes:
"Mr. Fu, you think too highly of yourself."
"Whether I do or not, you know better than I. I won’t argue with you," he said as he crouched down and opened his arms to Qiqi:
"Come, I’ll hold you."
Su Mu was about to refuse, but before the words could leave her mouth, Qiqi had already wriggled free from her grasp and ran joyfully toward Fu Shinian. This hurt Su Mu, but beyond that, she felt a sense of helplessness, growing increasingly aware that she was on the verge of losing her daughter.
Fu Shinian seemed to see what she was thinking and smiled faintly:
"Don’t worry, what’s mine is yours. You won’t lose her."
Su Mu: "..."
She felt transparent before Fu Shinian, like nothing could hide from his eyes. Yet three years ago, things between them had not been like this.
Fu Shinian had Su Mu all figured out, even guessing the high-speed train times she’d choose. When Su Mu saw him follow her to collect the tickets, she couldn’t help but look at him:
"Have you been spying on me?"
Fu Shinian chuckled lightly:
"Just use your brain, and you’ll know this is what you’d do. Why would I waste that energy?"
Qiqi couldn’t help but laugh at their conversation:
"Fu Shinian sees right through you, Su Mu."
Hearing this, Fu Shinian raised an eyebrow at her, and Qiqi also smiled. Su Mu, watching their interaction, felt something was off but couldn’t put her finger on it. After pondering for a bit, she gave up trying to figure it out. But out of her sight, Qiqi, hugging Fu Shinian’s neck, sought praise:
"Fu Shinian, did I help you out a lot with this?"
"Yes, you’re my top contributor on the road to reclaim my wife."
No matter how well Fu Shinian understood Su Mu, he couldn’t have been certain of which train she would take back if it weren’t for Qiqi playing with Su Mu’s phone that morning and discovering Su Mu’s ticket booking, then telling him about it. Perhaps they might not have been able to go back together, so saying Qiqi was Fu Shinian’s top contributor didn’t seem far-fetched after all, since Qiqi, who wanted to marry her "distant big brother" in the future, was truly helping Fu Shinian with all her heart.
On the way back to Shen City, Su Mu let Qiqi and Fu Shinian romp together and simply put on an eye mask to catch up on sleep. Fu Shinian didn’t bother her, and the trip passed without conversation.
It was barely 11 o’clock when they arrived in Shen City. Su Mu was ready to take a taxi, but before she could even ask Qiqi to get down from Fu Shinian’s embrace, Song Yi appeared in front of them, habitually saying:
"Mr. Fu, Mrs. Fu."
Su Mu paused, correcting him:
"Assistant Song, your address is wrong. I am no longer Mrs. Fu."
Song Yi gave an embarrassed smile but didn’t correct his original address, merely saying:
"The car is already waiting outside."
"I’d still rather take a taxi, thank you." Having said that, she looked at Qiqi in Fu Shinian’s arms: "Qiqi, it’s time for us to go."
But Qiqi showed no intention of leaving Fu Shinian’s embrace, looking sleepy: "Su Mu, why can’t we take Fu Shinian’s car together? I’m so sleepy, and the sun outside is too bright."
Fu Shinian smiled at Su Mu:
"How about I take Qiqi in my car, and you take a taxi?"
Su Mu: "..."
She didn’t trust leaving Qiqi with Fu Shinian, who knew if he would just hide her away, so she’d never see her again.
Inside the car driven by Song Yi, Su Mu ignored Qiqi who had been sleepy just moments ago but was now lively. She didn’t pay attention to Fu Shinian, who played games with Qiqi, instead, she focused on calling Jiang Bei. She thought that after a night of calm, Jiang Bei should have come to her senses, at least enough to contact her. But the result was still the same, worrying Su Mu even more.
Fu Shinian noticed her anxiety:
"Don’t worry, Jiang Bei will be fine."
"Do you have some news?"
Fu Shinian shook his head: "No, but I can call Ji Nanfeng to ask for you."
"What news could he have? Jiang Bei is probably the last person who wants to see him right now."
"Seeing or not seeing him is one thing, whether he has news is another."
Su Mu fell silent again. Fu Shinian and Qiqi paused their game, and he took out his phone from his pocket. But before he could make a call, his phone rang first. Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu: "It’s the old lady’s call, I’ll take it."
After pressing the answer button, Su Mu didn’t pay much attention initially, focused on Qiqi’s dodgy expressions which seemed increasingly off. Only when Fu Shinian ended the call, looking apologetically at Su Mu, he said:
"The old lady found out I’m with you and has asked me to bring you home for a meal."
Su Mu’s brow furrowed slightly:
"No, thank you, I have other matters. I’ll visit her another time when there’s a chance."
"Not interested in finding out news about Jiang Bei?"
Su Mu looked at him and smiled faintly: "Mr. Fu, are you threatening me?"
"Not at all, I just believe that if we go see grandmother together, you’ll find out about Jiang Bei sooner. It’s about time, not a threat."
"You think that without you, I can’t find Jiang Bei?"
