Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Never Get into My Bed for a Lifetime
Su Mu took a deep breath, pushed the door open, and entered. Fu Shinian had just come out of the bathroom, with only a towel wrapped around his waist; he wiped his hair while glancing at her, but his eyes quickly shifted away.
Seeing him like this, Su Mu, who had intended to say something, ultimately remained silent and went straight to the bathroom with the clothes she had picked out for changing.
After Su Mu entered the bathroom, Fu Shinian stopped wiping his hair, tossed the towel away in annoyance, and grabbed a lighter and cigarette from the nightstand before heading out to the balcony.
The taste of nicotine filled his mouth, and Fu Shinian exhaled slowly. In the past, he and Su Mu had shared a room countless times, but never before had he felt such an irritability that left him with no place to turn. What had they used to do together? Fu Shinian tried hard to recall, but it seemed that aside from what happened in bed, he couldn’t remember any other interaction between them.
Their communication was limited to the confines of the bed, and now this sole means of interaction had become a barrier. The shared space of their room also turned into shackles, stifling him considerably.
He drew heavily on his cigarette, his thoughts wandering to what Qiao Yu had said to him at the hospital. He had suggested that Fu Shinian should be gentler in bed, to slowly coax Su Mu out of her fear and aversion.
But what was the point of wasting energy on the physical side of things if there was absolutely no emotional attachment between the two?
At least Fu Shinian felt it was unnecessary.
Of course, it would be best if she could accept it, but if she couldn’t, Fu Shinian also felt there was no need to force the issue. Desire was natural, but if a man couldn’t even control his own urges, then what was the difference between him and an animal?
By the time Su Mu came out of the bathroom, Fu Shinian was already lying in bed, dressed in his lounge clothes, his eyes closed, breathing evenly. It was uncertain whether he was really asleep, but Su Mu didn’t dare to confirm. She walked as lightly as possible, fetched a new blanket from the wardrobe, carefully turned off the light, and slept on the sofa.
In the darkness, Fu Shinian slowly opened his eyes, which he had closed as though in meditation. Even without looking at Su Mu, he could keenly sense her escape from him—a flight that had nothing to do with the body but the mind.
He remembered the countless nights when she would cautiously, tentatively draw near him, thinking he was asleep, to embrace him. Compared to her current demeanor, it was a stark contrast.
An inexplicable anger lodged in his chest, and as someone not accustomed to holding back, he flung the covers aside, got out of bed, turned on the overhead light, and the room was once again filled with brightness. He could now see the figure on the sofa, startled like a frightened rabbit, sitting up and looking at him anxiously.
Fu Shinian sneered at her:
"Su Mu, you’ve decided you’ll never get into my bed for the rest of your life, haven’t you?"
After a few seconds of silence, Su Mu, who had rehearsed her speech on her lips, still chose to tell the real truth:
"Shinian, you’re well aware of my current physical condition. I’m not trying to distance myself from you; I just want to give myself some time to adjust."
"Adjust? Do you think you can get over it?"
Su Mu didn’t speak because she didn’t know the answer herself.
"You have such a strong aversion to me, is it because you don’t like the way I make love to you, or is it because you have an issue with the person on top of you?"
"I don’t understand what you mean by that."
"Don’t understand?" Fu Shinian laughed lightly: "There are only the two of us here. What’s the point of acting in front of me? Qiao Yu said it’s my approach that’s made you averse, but in my view, you just have a problem with me. After enduring under me for 2 years, have you finally reached your limit and can’t stand it anymore?"
Su Mu felt that something was off. She stood up from the sofa:
"What do you mean by that? You think I have someone else in my heart?"
"Whether you do or not, you know better than I do!"
Su Mu felt wronged. He was the first person she had ever liked; she had given him all of her firsts. Yet her sincere feelings for him had not only gone unanswered but had now been misconstrued as having ulterior motives, with every act deemed as insincere!
She no longer wanted to explain. Expressing her feelings for him again meant simply offering her heart up for him to trample at will.
"Think whatever you like."
Watching Su Mu sit back down on the sofa, Fu Shinian sneered coldly:
"Is that an admission by default?"
Su Mu remained silent.
"Fine! Remember the choice you’ve made today!"
After uttering that sentence, Fu Shinian turned and went to the wardrobe, changed his clothes, and left immediately. Su Mu got up intending to stop him, but ultimately did not.
Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, she watched as Fu Shinian drove away. The pain in her chest began to spread thread by thread throughout her body. Fu Shinian had always been concerned about his grandmother’s feelings, but now he could even leave the old house without any hesitation, in the middle of the night, because he was truly angry.
But what about herself?
All Su Mu could do was tightly hug herself.
The door behind her opened, and Su Shiyue appeared at the entrance, all smiles as if watching a play:
"Yo, what’s wrong with my brother? Why did he storm out in the middle of the night? Did you two have a fight?"
Su Mu turned around to look at Fu Shiyue, who was enjoying the spectacle at the doorway:
"Seeing us like this, you must be very happy, right?"
"Of course I’m happy, but what excites me even more is the thought of you rolling out of the Fu family. Judging by tonight, that day doesn’t seem far off, does it?"
Su Mu smiled faintly:
"Shiyue, can you guarantee that Qin Nianwan and Shinian won’t have any quarrels if they are together? Minor conflicts between husband and wife only gradually increase the affection. You’re still too young."
"Whether I understand it or not doesn’t matter; what matters is that you have to believe in such arguments yourself." Fu Shiyue elegantly yawned. "It’s getting late; I should go to sleep. But before I do, I’ll give Nianwan a call. After all, I can’t rest easy knowing my brother left alone. With Nianwan by his side, I’ll be able to sleep soundly."
Fu Shiyue wasn’t trying to irritate Su Mu on purpose. Indeed, she did call Qin Nianwan after returning to her room. Qin Nianwan had been contemplating how to spend a few more days alone with Fu Shinian before joining the set, and that’s when Fu Shiyue’s call came through. She glanced at the phone and answered:
"Yueyue, it’s so late. Is there something you need?"
"Nianwan, have you gone to bed yet? There’s something I want to tell you." Fu Shiyue didn’t give Qin Nianwan time to respond, saying, "My brother had a fight with that cheap woman; he was so angry that he drove off from the old house. Nianwan, do you want to go look for him?"
Qin Nianwan peeled off the eye mask at the corner of her eyes:
"They had a fight? What about?"
"I don’t know, but they were arguing fiercely. It’s the first time I’ve seen my brother so angry; he left without even considering Grandma’s feelings."
"Then do you know where Shinian went?"
"I don’t know," Fu Shiyue said regretfully. "But with my brother in that state, he’ll probably go to a bar to drink. You might want to look there."
Go to a bar? Qin Nianwan’s fame may not be known to everyone, but she was still a public figure. One slip, and she could get photographed. Besides, the bar was a place of mixed company, and she didn’t want to take that risk.
"Isn’t that a bit too risky? There have been paparazzi lurking around the bottom of my apartment building these last few days."
"Isn’t that perfect? If the paparazzi captured photos of you and my brother, wouldn’t that also indirectly confirm your relationship? It might be a good chance to infuriate Su Mu."
Qin Nianwan hesitated for a moment, "Alright, I’ll go have a look."
After hanging up on Fu Shiyue, Qin Nianwan stood up and walked to the wardrobe. Initially, she chose an outfit that had a more mature style, which was also the image her agent wanted for her. But the moment she put it on, she changed her mind. She chose the most ordinary pair of jeans and a plain white T-shirt, then tied her hair into a high ponytail.
When Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu walked into the Juese private room, there was already an empty bottle of red wine in front of Fu Shinian. The two men exchanged glances, then walked over without saying much and took their seats on the couch next to Fu Shinian. Qiao Yu probably knew the reason and didn’t bother saying anything, pouring himself a drink. In contrast, Ji Nanfeng, inquisitive as ever, wrapped an arm over Fu Shinian’s shoulder and started digging for details:
"What’s the matter? Frustrated?"
Hit where it hurt, Fu Shinian glared at him, "Frustration is far better than being worn out to death."
Qiao Yu turned to look at Ji Nanfeng. To be honest, Ji Nanfeng’s complexion looked somewhat worse than before. Not being able to help himself, he said:
"Have you been too unrestrained lately?"
"The company just signed some new artists, and as the boss, isn’t it my job to screen them first, see if they’ve really got the goods?"
Qiao Yu rolled his eyes at him without any reservation:
"By ’goods,’ are you referring to their talent or their measurements or perhaps... their skills in bed?"
"All of the above." Ji Nanfeng remained unfazed. "I have to say, my agency’s talent scouts do have good taste. The people they pick are all genuinely talented. You wouldn’t understand, being a man who doesn’t have a woman even once a year."
Qiao Yu took a sip of red wine:
"I prefer quality over quantity, thanks."
"Fine, fine, I’m the lecher and you’re the ascetic, right? I don’t know what you’re thinking. Heaven gave men such a useful ’tool’; we ought to make the most of it. It’d be a shame to let it go to waste, don’t you think?"
"Hmm, you make some sense, so I’ll just pray that when you meet the woman you want to marry, she won’t mind your countless conquests. And remember, too many night outings invite ghosts. Let me put it plainly: even if something happens to your health one day, don’t come to my hospital, and definitely don’t claim to know me. I can’t afford to lose face."
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
Ji Nanfeng decided to ignore Qiao Yu. People like him would never understand this kind of happiness. As for some woman he’d want to marry, that was just a fantasy. He was no naive youth who believed in love. His gaze drifted to Fu Shinian, who now leaned back in his chair, eyes closed, brows deeply furrowed, seemingly oblivious to the two lively people beside him. He couldn’t help but speak up:
"Weren’t you going back to the old house today? Aren’t you afraid the old lady will find out you’re out drinking in the middle of the night?"
