Chapter 38: Chapter 38 His Patience Isn’t Very Good

Su Mu had waited for Fu Shinian at Bishui Yuntian until five in the afternoon, but he still had not returned, and there was not a single phone call. Then she laughed at herself mockingly.

She knew very well that he would neither come back nor return her calls, yet she couldn’t help waiting eagerly. She truly admired her own propensity for self-deprecation.

Auntie Lin approached tentatively and asked:

"Madam, it’s getting late. Do you plan to go back to the old house today?"

Su Mu nodded:

"Yes, it’s lonely for grandmother to be at home by herself, and tomorrow is Mid-Autumn Festival. I better go back earlier."

Auntie Lin acknowledged with a nod:

"Then I’ll have the driver ready the car."

Su Mu got up from the couch and casually picked up her packed personal belongings to head to the door. Unexpectedly, Auntie Lin, who had moved ahead, suddenly turned around. She looked at Su Mu with a smile and said:

"Madam, the master has returned."

At that moment, Su Mu froze where she stood, somewhat doubting what she had heard, and even wondering if everything around her was just an illusion.

Perhaps it was the absolute disappointment earlier that made such an unexpected delight irresistible.

By the time Fu Shinian walked up to her, she was still in stunned silence. It was finally Auntie Lin who had to remind her. Su Mu regained her senses and looked at Fu Shinian, smiling faintly:

"You’re back."

On the way back to the old house, Fu Shinian drove himself while Su Mu sat in the passenger seat, still feeling an unreal sensation. It wasn’t the first time she had been apart from Fu Shinian for so long, but it was the first time she felt such intense unease.

Su Mu wanted to explain about the last incident, but after rehearsing it over and over in her mind, she ultimately chose silence. Such matters were probably something Fu Shinian preferred not to discuss, as they would wound a man’s pride.

They arrived at the old house without exchanging words. Su Mu was the first to get out of the car and went to the back seat to retrieve her luggage, but Fu Shinian beat her to it:

"What, you want grandma to see I’m not considerate and have her scold me again?"

Su Mu withdrew her hand.

In the living room, Su Shiyue was using an iPad to play games with grandma, who kept losing but remained cheerful. Upon seeing the two approach, Fu Shiyue directly took Su Mu by the hand and said:

"Grandma, sister-in-law is back. Let her play with you."

This display of affection made Su Mu look at Su Shiyue, who truly was a born actress, and also provocatively staring back as if certain that Su Mu would not tarnish her image.

Indeed, Su Mu wouldn’t, even without considering Fu Shinian’s presence. She had to consider grandma’s feelings and simply smiled, sitting down next to grandma:

"Grandma, what are you playing?"

Seeing that grandma wasn’t paying attention to her, Su Shiyue finally breathed a sigh of relief. She took a step to leave and rest in her room, having spent the entire afternoon keeping grandma company, which had exhausted her patience and energy. But as she turned and saw the look in Fu Shinian’s eyes, she suddenly realized something, and her back went cold.

Fu Shinian stepped forward: "Come upstairs."

"Brother..."

"Don’t make me say it twice."

Su Shiyue was extremely annoyed. For the entire week, Fu Shinian had never mentioned the drugging incident to her, not even a phone call, and she thought he had let it go. So, she had pushed it out of her mind. But seeing him now, she realized that he had been avoiding giving her time.

Feeling the urge to run, she considered escaping abroad for a few days with her passport upstairs, hoping that Fu Shinian might overlook the incident.

As she climbed the stairs to carry out her plan, Su Mu, who had been paying attention to grandma, finally spoke softly:

"Yueyue, your brother asked you to go up. You better hurry, as his patience is quite limited."

Grandma also looked at Su Shiyue:

"Yueyue, did you cause trouble outside again?"

"No, grandma. I’m so well-behaved, how could I cause trouble?"

Su Mu looked at Su Shiyue and smiled, adding:

"Yes, how could Yueyue cause any trouble? She’s always been such a good and gentle girl."

How could Su Shiyue not hear the blatant sarcasm in these words? But she dared not react; if grandma learned of her deeds, her future would be even more difficult. She could only glare at Su Mu and obediently headed upstairs.

"Susu," grandma took her hand. "Did you and Ah Nian have another fight?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"Grandma, we’re fine."

"Don’t try to fool me; I may be old, but I see things clearly. The way you two came in didn’t look fine at all. It seemed as though you haven’t seen each other for days and were just performing a play for me."

Su Mu: "...Grandma, you’re overthinking it."

She had thought that when she and Fu Shinian entered the house, grandma was too occupied with her game to notice them. However, it turned out that grandma had seen everything.

Grandma laughed helplessly:

"I know you don’t want me to worry, but Susu, marriage isn’t for show. What really matters is how comfortable and at ease you feel,"

Su Mu smiled slightly:

"Thank you, Grandma, but I think I’m quite content."

As long as I have Fu Shinian, everything is fine.

In the study, Fu Shinian stood in front of the bookshelf flipping through books, while Su Shiyue stood at the door, hesitating to enter, timidly saying:

"Brother..."

"Come in, and close the door."

"Brother, I was wrong."

Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds, closed the book in his hand, returned it to its place, and then turned around to look at Su Shiyue, with not a trace of warmth in his eyes:

"Wrong? How so?"

"I shouldn’t have drugged you, shouldn’t have tried to meddle with your relationship with Sister Wan, but I did it for your sake. You’ve been living so miserably these past two years. Sister Wan finally came back, yet two months have passed and there hasn’t been any progress between you two. That made me anxious."

Fu Shinian scoffed coldly but didn’t immediately respond to her words. Instead, he walked over, took her by the hand, led her into the room, and gently closed the door.

At that moment, Su Shiyue’s nerves multiplied geometrically in her body, and she instinctively wanted to back away, but the study was only so big—where could she retreat to?

"If I remember correctly, your birthday is right after Mid-Autumn Festival, isn’t it?"

Su Shiyue was stunned. She thought Fu Shinian would reprimand her, but he started by mentioning something completely unrelated. For a moment, she couldn’t grasp what Fu Shinian was planning, and could only follow along with his words.

"Yes, August 17." Su Shiyue looked cautiously at Fu Shinian: "I didn’t expect you to remember."

"Naturally, you’re my only sister. I couldn’t forget such an annual event," Fu Shinian replied as he took his seat behind his desk: "You’re turning 20 this year. It should be celebrated properly. Notify your friends to come over and make it lively."

"Brother..."

For Su Shiyue, this was indeed a good thing. Although she was the Fu family’s precious daughter, the friends around her were only interested in Fu Shinian standing behind her. Despite the years, Fu Shinian had never publicly accompanied her to any event, generating endless rumors that she wasn’t valued by Fu Shinian, and she had even heard rumors that she wasn’t actually his biological sister.

Now that Fu Shinian was organizing her birthday party himself, it was undoubtedly a slap in the face to those who looked down on her.

Yet, Su Shiyue still felt vaguely uneasy.

"What’s the matter? Aren’t you happy?"

Su Shiyue shook her head:

"How could I not be? I just didn’t expect you to do this."

Fu Shinian smiled faintly:

"Is that so? Maybe there’s a lot you don’t expect."

Su Shiyue wanted to say something, but Fu Shinian interrupted: "If there’s nothing else, you can go."

"Brother." Su Shiyue could hardly believe her ears: "You’re not going to scold me?"

"I can’t be bothered to scold."

After dinner, regardless of the state of their relationships, they kept company with the elderly lady for a long time, only retiring when she started feeling sleepy, and Su Mu then accompanied her back to her room to rest.

After helping the elderly lady into bed, Su Mu did not want to leave, lingering in a manner that made the elderly lady notice something was amiss:

"What’s the matter?"

Su Mu smiled slightly: "Grandma, I want to stay with you tonight."

The elderly lady smiled upon hearing this, showing no surprise and asking no questions about why Su Mu made such a proposal, nor inquiring about what exactly had happened between her and Fu Shinian. Instead, she just looked at Su Mu and took her hand in hers:

"Susu, Grandma is asking you, do you no longer want to share the same bed with Ah Nian in the future?"

Su Mu shook her head.

"I don’t know what has happened between you two, but life moves forward. Since problems will eventually need addressing, don’t drag them out, especially between spouses. Overnight grudges turn trivialities into magnified disputes of a hundred or a thousandfold, which is the most destructive way to handle relationships. Grandma hopes you won’t do this."

"Of course. If you think that letting that boy stew for a few days to teach him a lesson is necessary, stay with Grandma tonight. I assure you he won’t dare criticize you one bit."

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds before she finally shook her head:

"Grandma, you should rest early. I’ll keep you company tomorrow."

The elderly lady seemed very pleased with her response, smiling slightly and waving her off:

"Go on then; don’t worry, you have Grandma’s support in everything."

"Thank you, Grandma."

From her grandmother’s room to the room she shared with Fu Shinian, Su Mu took a long time to cover this distance within the house. Although she and Fu Shinian had spent some time together during the day, their interaction still contained elements of acting, without any mention of that awkward night.

But now, having to stay in the same space together, that night’s events seemed unavoidable. Su Mu had no idea what awaited her. Fu Shinian probably would not force her, given his pride and dignity, but no matter what the situation, Su Mu found herself uncontrollably becoming anxious.
